About:
Benefiting Humanitarian Relief in Ukraine
Internationally acclaimed cellist, composer and multilingual vocalist IAN MAKSIN returns to Chicago's Epiphany Center for the Arts, 207 S. Ashland Avenue as part of his North American “Cello for Peace” tour to support peace in Ukraine. Saturday, September 10, 7:30PM. The tour is underwritten in part by Lifeway Foods and Acutia
Joined by international musicians of the Zaria Band, Maksin will play music from his two most recent releases “The Alchemist” (2021) and “Sempre” (2019) as well as some new original music that has not been recorded yet. He will also sing from his collection of songs in at least 30 languages including Ukrainian, Polish, French, Spanish, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Arabic, Armenian, Farsi and many others. And lastly he will share his latest single “Rain Again” ("Знов Дощi”) which he dedicated to the people of Ukraine and proceeds from its sales benefiting humanitarian relief in Ukraine.
“This war has deeply affected me” Maksin said. It is my mission, as a human being and as an artist, to do everything possible on my part to support the people of Ukraine by raising humanitarian funds and sharing my music with those who need it the most during these dire times. I believe that music will help bring peace, first into our souls and then in the world around us.”
Maksin is donating a portion of the proceeds from the ticket and merch sales to “For Wellbeing”, a Chicago-based nonprofit whose mission is to create mobile medical units in parts of Ukraine where hospitals and clinics have been destroyed by war.
Ian Maksin has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres and traditional music from around the globe in a new way, using his cello as the primary unifying force. Born in Leningrad, he began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad, then came to the U.S. at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. After working for many years in the classical genre, including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami, he decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience, including playing rock and blues guitar, and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer.
A portion of the proceeds benefits humanitarian relief in Ukraine.

About:
Collaborative Works Festival Concert III: The American Songbag
Description
Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago (CAIC) is pleased to present their final concert on their 11th annual Collaborative Works Festival at Epiphany Center for the Arts. This year’s festival, titled The Song of Chicago focuses on the rich tradition of song that has emerged from Chicago – and features music and poetry written, and performed, by Chicagoans.
The closing concert will examine Chicago poet, journalist, and urban folk singer Carl Sandburg’s seminal anthology of American Folk songs, The American Songbag. Published in 1927, while Sandburg was living in Chicago, the anthology was an instantly popular collection of folk songs that proved to be foundational for the American folk resurgence, inspiring singers like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. A powerful statement of a diverse vision of American identity, Sandburg described the collection as a "ragbag of stripes and streaks of color from nearly all ends of the earth ... rich with the diversity of the United States."
The concert will feature arrangements of many of the songs contained in Sandburg's collection alongside various art song settings of his poetry.
About CAIC: Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago works to make Chicago a world home for the study and performance of art song and vocal chamber music. CAIC presents performance and educational events, including the Collaborative Works Festival, the Lieder Lounge recital series, master classes, and educational workshops. Since its founding in 2010 by pianists Shannon McGinnis and Nicholas Hutchinson and tenor Nicholas Phan, CAIC has presented many of the world’s leading proponents for the art song and vocal chamber music repertoire.

About:
Dan Moroz & Tim Seisser
What happens when two of Chicago’s most innovative instrumentalists come together to put on a program that redefines the boundaries of their respective instruments? We’re not sure either, but this will be a one-of-a-kind concert you don’t want to miss!
Chicago-based saxophonist Dan Moroz is an innovative performer, published composer, and well-regarded music educator that has built a reputation of creating engaging, emotional, and thought-provoking concert experiences. His unique style oscillates between the cerebral and the visceral, the technical and the lyrical, the traditional and the experimental, the raw and the refined; a blend of simplicity and complexity delivered in a style that is genre-defying, yet relatable and enjoyable to audiences of any variety.
Timothy Seisser grew up in Arlington Heights, IL, where he began playing bass at age thirteen. Quickly progressing technically and musically, he started gigging at age sixteen in the Chicagoland-area. As a high school senior in 2001, he traveled to New York City with the jazz big band YJED to perform at the 6th Annual Essentially Ellington Festival at Lincoln Center. That same year, Tim was named recipient of the Robert Calisch Fine Arts award.
Tim moved to Chicago in 2004 and began his career as a full-time musician. It did not take long to become one of the city’s most in-demand sidemen/bassists. His fluidity between genres has afforded him the opportunity to perform with a wide range of talent, including smooth jazz guitarist Nick Colionne, virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy, drummer/producer Makaya McCraven, jazz/fusion keyboardist Greg Spero, Brazilian jazz artist Luciano Antonio, and many more. Tim boasts an impressive recording resume and has appeared on recordings alongside Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson), Bob Minzter, Will Kennedy (The Yellowjackets), Allen Vizzutti (jazz trumpeter), and Khari Parker (Destiny’s Child, Boz Scaggs, George Benson), among others. Tim is the bassist for internationally renowned progressive rock band District 97. He also performs regularly with jazz fusion powerhouse New Nostalgia and his own trio TS3.
Wire and Wood. Tim’s first album as a leader, was released in 2008. It received acclaim from jazz reviewers and has been played on multiple Chicago-area jazz stations including WDCB and WNUA. That's Not Jazz (2010), T.S.5 Live! (2011). and One For All (2013) soon followed. His latest solo release is Solitude (2019), which showcases his technical prowess on unaccompanied bass guitar. In the summer of 2022, Tim released his newest album, from his trio TS3, entitled “It’s Just O.K.”. The album features some of the jazz worlds biggest names including Tim Lefebvre (Bass, Producer), Donny McCaslin (Sax), Howard Levy (Harmonica) and Fareed Haque (guitar).
Tim is an alumni of Victor Wooten’s Bass/Nature Camp and has had the privilege to study with Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Adam Nitti, Chuck Rainey, Jeff Berlin, and Kelly Sill. Tim was a staff writer for the online publication Bass Musician Magazine. As a luthier, Tim runs his own bass guitar custom-build/repair shop, LowDown Bass Guitars. He has exhibited at many regional and national guitar shows including the winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA.

About Philip Daniel:
During his undergraduate years, Philip discovered a passion for creating his own music. He was heavily inspired by contemporary classical composers such as Olafur Arnalds, NIls Frahm, Philip Glass, Max Richter and more by their ability to transmit powerful emotions thru simplistic, minimalistic sound while each possessing their own unique “voice” in a non-cliche manner. He aims to follow in these musicians footsteps by blending aspects of classical music, minimalism, cinematic qualities, and more. He seeks to appeal to the seasoned, trained musician as well as the non-musically inclined listener in a way that can impact both.
Philip has released 7 studio albums, several EP’s, and is an active collaborator. He has ventured into the film composing world and also has been active as a composer for dance, working with notable dance companies such as the Jacob Jonas dance company, Whim Whim, SALT Dance, Tristian Griffin Dance Company and more. His music has been streamed over 20 million times and has been featured in countless films worldwide. Daniel has now been moving away from composing with traditional sounds and experimenting with blending electronics with classical instrumentation, which can be heard on current projects and scores.
His sole purpose as a composer is to create music that's primary goal is to convey unequivocal emotion and to make people truly “feel”. Philip believes that music has a unique ability to cause change in the world by this personal connection to individual listeners and aims to be a small part in positively impacting his community thru his music.
Philip currently resides in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife and mini-aussie pup working in his home studio.

About:
Ensemble Dal Niente performs new and experimental chamber music with dedication, virtuosity, and an exploratory spirit. Flexible and adaptable, Dal Niente’s roster of 26 musicians presents an uncommonly broad range of contemporary music, guiding listeners towards music that transforms existing ideas and subverts convention. Audiences coming to Dal Niente shows can expect distinctive productions—from fully staged operas to multimedia spectacles to intimate solo performances—that are curated to pique curiosity and connect art, culture, and people.
Now in its second decade, Ensemble Dal Niente has performed concerts across Europe and the Americas, including appearances at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC; The Foro Internacional de Música Nueva in Mexico City; Radialsystem Berlin, MusicArte Festival in Panama City; The Library of Congress and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival; Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles; The Americas Society; and the Darmstadt Summer Courses in Germany. Dal Niente is the recipient of the 2019 Fromm Music Foundation prize, and was the first-ever ensemble to win the Kranichstein prize for interpretation in 2012. The group has recordings available on the New World, New Amsterdam, New Focus, Navona, Parlour Tapes+, and Carrier labels; has held residencies at The University of Chicago, Harvard University, Stanford University, Brown University, Brandeis University, and Northwestern University, among others; and collaborated with a wide range of composers, from Gérard Grisey to George Lewis to Hilda Paredes to Roscoe Mitchell.
The ensemble's name, Dal Niente ("from nothing" in Italian), is a tribute to Helmut Lachenmann's Dal niente (Interieur III), a work that upended traditional conceptions of instrumental technique; and also a reference to the group’s humble beginnings.
