Event Details
Date: Sunday, May 1 - May 3, 2o22
Show Time: 3PM
Concert Program:
Johann Sebastian Bach | Musical Offering in C minor, BWV 1079, Trio Sonata (flute, violin, cello, piano)
Ludwig van Beethoven | String Trio in c minor, Op. 9, No. 3 (violin, viola, cello)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Flute Quartet in D Major, K. 285 (flute, violin, viola, cello)
Behzad Ranjbaran | Fountains of Fin (flute, violin, cello)
About the show:
The experience of hearing Picosa’s final programs of the season will be like walking through the world’s most exquisite historic spaces, whether Notre Dame, Himeji Castle, Machu Pichu, or the Great Pyramid of Giza. Our first impression is to admire the beauty and grandeur, but to consider their craftsmanship and architecture truly brings us to a place of awe. From Mozart’s delightful Flute Quartet in D Major, k. 285 to Beethoven’s impassioned String Trio in c minor, Op. 9, No. 3 (an important key that is vital to his greatest works), we see two early career works that foreshadow the depth and greatness that is to come. We can also describe Bach’s Musical Offering in c minor, BWV 1079 as among history’s great “architectural” works in its form and complexity. However, it also musically represents the importance of his Lutheran faith both in its writing and his signature. The piece, as in all of his music, closes with the initials “S.D.G.” - Soli Deo Gloria, “to God be the glory”. Finally, Behzad Ranjbaran incorporates beloved Iranian musical elements into his trio. Of this he writes “Fountains of Fin, (pronounced "feen") celebrates one of the most enchanting gardens, the historical Garden of Fin in Kashan, Iran.”
Picosa Artists:
Jennie Oh Brown | flute
Elizabeth Brausa Brathwaite | violin
Paula Kosower | cello
Kuang-Hao Huang | piano

Acoustic Music Series presents: Peter Ferry plays Mellits and Woods
Date: Sunday, June 12, 2022
Doors: 1 pm
Showtime: 2 pm
About:
The Chicago premieres of extraordinary new solo works by Marc Mellits and Ayanna Woods, followed by conversations with the artists.
Called "the ingenious percussionist Peter Ferry," (Chicago Sun-Times) and “an artist of vision... presenting percussion in a stunning thoughtful way,” (Democrat and Chronicle) PETER FERRY is a young American percussion soloist dedicated to contemporary repertoire and artistic collaboration. Following his concerto debut at age 18, Ferry has championed the works of living composers, including Michael Daugherty who has praised Ferry as “one of the most promising and committed soloists of his generation.”
AYANNA WOODS is a Grammy-nominated performer, composer and bandleader from Chicago. Her music explores the spaces between acoustic and electronic, traditional and esoteric, wildly improvisational and mathematically rigorous. A collaborator across genres and forms, her work spans new music, theater, film scoring, arranging, songwriting, and improvisation. She earned her B.A. in music from Yale University.
Composer MARC MELLITS is one of the leading American composers of his generation, enjoying hundreds of performances throughout the world every year, making him one of the most performed living composers in the United States. His unique musical style is an eclectic combination of driving rhythms, soaring lyricism, and colorful orchestrations that all combine to communicate directly with the listener. His music is eclectic, all-encompassing, colorful, and always has a sense of forward motion.
"In Bloom Balloon, I was interested in exploring the vibraphone’s rich capacity for gradation. I returned often to the image of a dandelion seed leaving the plant—both modular and smooth, subtractive and generative. The title is a play on the image of a dandelion seed, and an onomatopoeia for clustered sounds drifting apart." –Ayanna Woods
"I composed Parkland during the immediate aftermath of the February 14, 2018, school shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida. A childhood friend of mine lives in the Parkland area and went through the horror of knowing that her son was in the school during the shooting, the nightmare that all parents in the United States fear. It is music that is direct, largely quiet, and lives in a stretched-out moment of time that combines ethereal fear, solitude, sadness, patience, and resolve into a tribute to a community that was forced to bear a burden they should never have had to witness." -Marc Mellits

About:
A strong drive to produce chamber music of the highest standard brought friends and colleagues together in the months preceding the pandemic to form the Indigo Ensemble. In those initial 5 pre pandemic months, members of the Indigo Ensemble collaborated in performances of various genres, from piano trios to piano quintets, string quartets, string duos and sonatas showcasing repertoire from the Baroque to works of living composers. Probing musicianship and technical security led to successful performances throughout the Chicagoland area, and with the recent return to live performances, members of the Indigo Ensemble are once again thrilled to share their renewed joy, passion and gratitude in making chamber music of the highest level with their audiences.
In our Epiphany Center concert, piano trios of Beethoven and Faure will be presented by Indigo Ensemble members Timothy Archbold, Yuriy Geyer and Jeffrey Panko.
Timothy Archbold is an Australian cellist currently playing with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Chicago, Skylight Theater, and as associate principal with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. He received his undergraduate degree in Music from the University of Melbourne, Australia then studied chamber music and cello performance in Germany for five years at the Hochschule fur Kunste in Bremen and European Chamber Music Academy in Hannover. He went on to receive his master’s degree in music from Wichita State University where he played with the Graduate String Quartet and the Wichita Symphony. In addition to his classical performing, Timothy has a large studio of private students and coaches honor chamber music ensembles with Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra and several area high schools. When not doing cello stuff, Timothy enjoys crossfit and spending time with his wife and 3 girls Eleanor, Lucy and Abigail.
Pianist Jeffrey Panko has been featured as a solo and collaborative performer in performances throughout the United States and Europe, winning top prizes in the Society of American Musicians’ Piano Competition (Chicago) and the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition (New York). Performances of note include appearances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, Lincoln Center Library, Symphony Center (Chicago), WQXR Radio (New York), WFMT Radio (Chicago) and Panko has received critical acclaim for recordings produced by the Albany and Innova labels. An Artist Faculty member of the New Music School piano faculty in Chicago, Panko also serves as Minister of Music and as Artistic Director of the Music at Bethel Concert Series for Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Making his solo debut at the age of 10 with the Florida Symphony Orchestra, violinist Yuriy Geyer went on to receive numerous prestigious awards including first prizes at the Music Teachers National Association Violin competition, American String Teachers Violin national violin competition, Bach Society Violin competition, and a fellowship grant from the Aspen Music Festival. After graduating from Northwestern University, Yuriy has served as a substitute member of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and is currently the concertmaster of the local Chicago Arts Orchestra and Northwest Festival Orchestra, and has recorded with the Naxos label.

About Dan Moroz:
Chicago-based saxophonist Dan Moroz is an innovative performer, published composer, and well-regarded music educator that has built a reputation of creating engaging, emotional, and thought-provoking concert experiences. His unique style oscillates between the cerebral and the visceral, the technical and the lyrical, the traditional and the experimental, the raw and the refined; a blend of simplicity and complexity delivered in a style that is genre-defying, yet relatable and enjoyable to audiences of any variety.
This concert of original material will be centered around the allegory of Plato’s Cave. As we recover as a society from lockdowns and mandates and try to get “back to normal”, many are saying we live in a “post-truth world”. Confusion is everywhere and our collective mental health is in a precarious state. Reconnecting to ourselves and to each other through the humanities is an important first step to exiting the cave and understanding universal truths. Turn away from your screens, step into Epiphany, and open yourself to this transcendent experience!
Dan Moroz will be joined for this performance by Dan Hennel (piano), Eric Morong (vibraphone), and Bryanna Moroz (voice/ukulele).
“It is the task of the enlightened not only to ascend to learning and to see the good, but to be willing to descend again to those prisoners and to share their troubles and their honors, whether they are worth having or not. And this they must do, even with the prospect of death.”
