About The Damani Philips Quartet:
Saxophonist, composer and recording artist Dr. Damani Phillips makes his Chicago debut at the Epiphany Center for the Arts. Hailing from Pontiac, MI, Phillips is the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Iowa and has performed and taught at major venues and universities around the world. With roots firmly in the tradition of hard bop while still keeping a close ear on modern innovations, his music is best described as a blend of the soulfulness of Cannonball Adderley with the harmonic savvy of Kenny Garrett. His aspirations as a saxophonist are clear: to strike a soulful balance between jazz tradition and contemporary innovation, and to make music that speaks to ALL people on a wavelength that they can appreciate—regardless of their walk of life. In making this happen, Phillips enlists the help of a monster cast of exceptional musicians from around the region: William Menefield – piano, Brandon Meeks – bass, and Cassius Goens - drums. Whether your flavor is straight-ahead jazz, funk. Hip hop or even neo-soul, the DPQ is guaranteed to have a little somethin’ planned that you can vibe to!
