About the event:
JAZZ CHATS! Women in Chicago Jazz History.
A panel of distinguished Chicago musicians and educators discuss, explore, and play the musical works of Lil Hardin Armstrong.
100 years ago in Chicago, gifted pianist and composer Lil Hardin Armstrong helped guide and define the career of her husband, Louis Armstrong. We take this opportunity to observe Women’s History Month by discussing a her career with a panel of distinguished Chicago jazz artists and educators, including pianist Bethany Pickens, pianist and Jazz Institute of Chicago Fellow Alexis Lombre, saxophonist, composer and educator Sharel Cassity, and moderator Judith Stein. Plus, hear recordings and live samplings of her work.
The Jazz Institute of Chicago is celebrating the centennial of Louis Armstrong’s arrival to Chicago with a series of performances, discussions, and showings throughout 2022. No conversation about Louis would be complete without discussing his wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, an accomplished pianist and composer who helped shape the life and music of her husband’s internationally celebrated career. We take this opportunity to observe Women’s History Month by discussing a her career with a panel of distinguished Chicago jazz artists and educators.
JazzCity is presented by the Jazz Institute of Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Park District and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts . Media sponsors are WDCB and WHPK radio.
