Jared Schonig is a Grammy-Award winning drummer, composer, and bandleader who has toured and/or recorded internationally with a host of well-known artists including Nicholas Payton, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue & Secret Society, Laurence Hobgood, Tim Hagans, Fred Hersch, Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Harrell, and Joe Locke. A favorite among vocalists, he has toured with Grammy-Award winners Kristin Chenoweth, Kurt Elling, The New York Voices, Cynthia Erivo, Katherine McPhee, Jessica Vosk, and singer/songwriter Donna Lewis. He has released 5 critically acclaimed CDs in the last 8 years with the Wee Trio, a group he co-led, as well as two recently released solo projects of original music, one for big band and one for quintet. He is a fixture in both the New York broadway and jazz scenes including the Grammy, Tony, and Emmy-Award winning revival of The Color Purple, as well as the 10-time Tony-winning Moulin Rouge.
 Jared’s band for the evening of 4/19/23 consists of members of UIC’s stellar jazz faculty including Andy Baker (trombone), Jon Irabagon (tenor saxophone), Marques Carroll (trumpet), Larry Kohut (bass), and Michael Stryker (piano). Dr. Michael Stryker leads the Jazz Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “We are so pleased to have Jared on campus for a 3-day residency from April 18 th – April 20 th that includes this sextet performance in the Sanctuary at the Epiphany Center for the Arts on 4/19, as well as the 2023 UIC Jazz Festival (to be held throughout Epiphany on 4/20) with high schools and community college bands performing for judge’s comments and receiving educational clinics. There’s also a concert as part of the festival with the UIC Jazz Ensemble featuring Jared Schonig that you don’t want to miss!
