About Matthew Fries:Ā
Matthew FriesĀ is a joyful voice on the pianoĀ with a unique and recognizable style that is authentically rooted in theĀ tradition ofĀ the classic jazz pianists, while still looking forward toĀ the future of the music and the instrument.
As a composer and leader he has performed his own music extensively,Ā recording ten albums of mostly originalĀ compositions. His music has beenĀ described as playful and hopeful, introspective, full of joy andĀ wonderment, and awashĀ with tonal colors. But it is his deeply swingingĀ piano style and collaborative spirit that have also made him anĀ in-demandĀ sideman for both instrumentalists and vocalists. He has touredĀ worldwide, appears on scores of recordings, and his work hasĀ beenĀ described as āthe best jazz accompaniment Iāve seen in a cabaret inĀ yearsā (The New York Times), and āthe crispestĀ rhythm section imaginableā (The London Times).
Matthew is a dedicated educator and he continues to teach lessons,Ā masterclasses, and clinics throughout the US andĀ abroad. Since 2017 heĀ is a proud part of theĀ Western Michigan UniversityĀ faculty as Professor of Jazz Piano where heĀ teaches private lessons,Ā coaches jazz combos, and teaches classes in jazz theory, improvisation,Ā composition andĀ arranging.
Born in Selinsgrove, PA into a musical family, his father was hisĀ first piano teacher. Matthew was interested in the freedom ofĀ musicalĀ improvisation at an early age, but it was a class in college thatĀ sparked his interest in jazz piano. He has a bachelorāsĀ degree fromĀ Ithaca College and a masterās from the University of Tennessee where heĀ was mentored by the Memphis jazzĀ piano great,Ā Donald Brown.Ā It was Donald who saw the talent and commitment in Matthew andĀ encouraged him to pursueĀ music in NYC. He moved there in 1994 andĀ quickly established himself as a recognizable and integral part of theĀ jazz sceneĀ ā performing in major clubs, recording, and touring whileĀ calling NYC home for more than twenty years. Through DonaldĀ Brown heĀ also became connected with pianistsĀ James WilliamsĀ andĀ Mulgrew MillerĀ who continued to mentor him in NYCĀ and help him develop his personal style and deep connection to the tradition of jazz piano.
Matthew won theĀ Great American Jazz Piano CompetitionĀ in 1997 and was runner-up in the American PianistsĀ Association Jazz Piano Competition.
He has recorded five albums and toured internationally with his collaborative, original-music trioĀ TRI-FIĀ ā a group thatĀ JazzĀ ReviewĀ says, ātakes on the Jazz Trio challenge and delivers a āknock outā punch,ā and about whomĀ Downbeat MagazineĀ says, āthe clairvoyance of these three members can be mesmerizing.ā
He has a 20-year collaboration of touring, recording and composing with singer-songwriterĀ Curtis StigersĀ as part of his band.
He has shared the stage with a long list of jazz performers thatĀ includes Curtis Stigers, Stacey Kent, Ann Hampton Callaway,Ā DeeDeeĀ Bridgewater, Vincent Herring, Steve Wilson, Joel Frahm, Steve LaSpina,Ā Dave Samuels, Claudio Roditi, TerellĀ Stafford and many others.
