ARTIST STATEMENT:
The indigenous practice of tattooing in the Philippines is done by hammering charcoal ink into the skin using tools like a citrus thorn or bamboo stick. While men’s tattoos reflected their social status and accomplishments as a warrior, women’s tattoos are a reflection of their beauty, and spiritual connection to nature and one’s ancestors.

ARTIST BIO:
Kristel Becares is a Filipino illustrator and graphic novel artist based in Chicago, IL. Her work is influenced by Manga, mythology and folklore, fashion and costume design, music, and history; but above all, she is driven by her love of storytelling.
