Artist Statement
These four photo collages are from a series of 12 titled Solitude and Other Demons, an Unfinished Narrative. Constructed from vintage press photos on Philippine martial law in the 1970s and 1980s, the series explores the constant tension in history that pits the detachment of documentation with the elasticity of imagination, in the process testing the malleability of memory. Forsaking digital manipulation in favor of manual cut and paste, the series explores how much of facts can be eliminated, isolated, augmented, amplified, replaced, and enhanced before crossing the boundary to fiction; and how much of truth remains once history is fictionalized.
