My Land #3 (2024)
Photography
24” x 16”

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The American landscape, a mosaic of natural and man-made chasms, mirrors the cracks and splinters in my own heart. When I gaze upon its desolate beauty, a familiar tune fills my head: “This land is your land, this land is my land…” Pride begins to swell within me, humbled to call this country home. But then an immediate thought follows: is this land my land*? Can I call this place home when so often others have made me doubt my own sense of belonging?  Although born an American citizen, how many times have I had to qualify my Americanness simply because of how I look? I grow tired when asked questions like, “What are you?” or “When did you come to America?” And yet I embrace both the waste and wonder of this terrain, I endure the effort to bridge the divisions in my heart. Because America is my land. *The artist is aware of the complexities of land ownership in America, particularly the injustices committed against its Native Peoples. It is not the artist’s intent to further exploit this reality, but to explore the complexities of identity for Filipino-Americans in the diaspora and across generations.
