About:
Afro Dead is a musical collective formed in 2022 by Aaron Feder to reimagine the music of the Grateful Dead in Afro-Pop styles, such as soukous, Afrobeat, high-life, reggae and more. He has been able to use his experience as founder and band leader of Alma Afrobeat Ensemble (four albums, four US tours) and co-founder of the record label Slow Walk Music (home to African music made in Spain) resulting in a Summer 2024 tour of the US and Canada, and a Fall 2024 tour of Spain.
For 2026 the band will feature the amazing Zimbabwean-American singer Lady Chi (Chiedza Kundidzora). She is a fixture in the Grateful Dead world, touring with Melvin Seals and JGB, as well as many other funk/soul projects.
Aaron Feder has been a lifelong participant in the Grateful Dead’s music scene, having played and recorded with Grammy award winners Peter Rowan and Eric Krasno, as well as members of Phil Lesh and Friends, Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon, Everyone Orchestra and much more. Aaron’s varied musical experiences has helped create a vibrant, one-of-a-kind musical project, mixing classic Americana compositions with danceable African grooves and a healthy dose of improvisation.
The band’s version of Dark Star was featured on the compilation “The Music Plays the Band” alongside Dark Star Orchestra, Oteil Burbridge, ALO and many more.

About PIWA:
About Alexis Plaen:
Alexis Plaen is a Chicago-based alt pop singer-songwrtier set to make her mark with her genre-defying debut album, Enjoy the Void. Originally from Minneapolis, Alexis blends her electronic pop rock sound, introspective lyrics, and multi-media artistry to build her surreal world of the Void, which chronicles her epic journey through an existential crisis. Alexis' lyrics explore themes of existentialism in a capitalist society, the search for meaning amongst chaos, connection, and transformation. She searches for the divine in the digital and the ethereal in the mundane, creating cinematic experiences that speak to a dreamscape of the human condition. By combining emerging technology with timeless stories and mediums, Alexis' world invites listeners to both escape reality and confront it at the same time.
Enjoy the Void's philosophical themes are deeply influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and a personal tragedy in 2023 when Alexis' apartment burned down during the making of the record. Although Alexis lost everything she owned to the fire (including her pet cat), she slowly rebuilt as they finished the album and her resilience and healing journey have become infused into the fabric of the Void. Her stories have become more than just songs— they are a rallying cry for change, personal reflection, and growth from an unyielding spirit. From sculpting her own props to hosting immersive events for fans, Alexis is just getting started and has no plans to slow down.

Attend the EXPO reception for Forget Me Not on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00 pm.
Forget Me Not features 10 emerging and mid-career Chicago-based artists who showcase the city's burgeoning creative talent and diversity: Stevie Connor, Rex Delafkaran, Bailey Ellens, Juan Molina Hernández, Bianca Pastel, Ava L. Peterson, Alayna Pernell, Kitty Rauth, Selma Suleiman, and Marlon Tobias, all of whom broadly reflect on themes of place, home, belonging, and community.
Curated by School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Arts Administration and Policy graduate students Serena Fox, Isabelle (Izzy) Jaeggin, Tia Lowe, and Helena Rodriguez, in collaboration with Epiphany Center for the Arts, the exhibition presents a diverse range of artistic practices, including installation, photography, ceramics, and sculpture, with fiber, collage, and painting.
While some of the featured artists render the ideas of place, home, belonging, and community tangibly through their usage of objects, materiality, and the natural world, others probe the emotional and psychological landscapes of nostalgia and childhood. Characterized by movement and diaspora, these artists draw on archival material, ancestral traditions, and cultural motifs, grounding their work in practices of preservation.
Forget Me Not highlights both the tension and interdependence between individualism and communal belonging. Together, these artists offer an assemblage of perspectives on how we ground ourselves in the world: through ritual, storytelling, connectivity, joy, and resistance. We invite viewers to consider the power of the collective and how, despite our differences, we all find ourselves here, together.

Attend the closing reception for Ringleader Noël Morical and Mat Mancini on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00 pm.
Ringleader is a collaborative furniture design project by artists Noël Morical and Mat Mancini, forged at the intersection of sculpture, utility, and irreverent joy. Rooted in their independent studio practices, the duo merges Noël’s intricate macramé technique with Mat’s materially layered, collage-based approach to create hybrid objects that are as functional as they are fantastically whimsy.
The collaboration merges through a heart-to-heart between handcrafted and industrial construction. Noël's use of richly colored paracord—knotted, braided, and tensioned—introduces a tactile softness and sculptural rhythm to the work. Her practice draws from the language of textiles and body adornment, reimagining traditional macramé within a contemporary design context. Chairs, tables, and lighting elements become vessels of texture and intimacy—each loop and knot a deliberate gesture toward intentional care and geometric complexity.
In parallel, Mat brings an eclectic material and cultural vocabulary drawn from cast forms, welded steel display systems, resin-infused prints, and 1990s pop-cultural motifs. Splicing structure with spirit, his practice grazes the edges of contemporary furniture’s conventions, guided by an irreverent yet lyrical sensibility. His surfaces feel both archival and futuristic—evoking suburban skate parks, color block fashion, Greco-Roman columns, and the visual clutter of mischievous, meaningful adolescence.
Together, their work percolates between design, sculpture, and play—producing objects that are performative, customizable, and unapologetically personal. Whether it’s a chair that functions like a stage prop or a lamp that behaves like a wearable artifact, Ringleader treats furniture as a site of experimentation: a place where memory, humor, tactility, and utility converge.

Attend the closing reception for Portraits of People Who Make Music by Alexa Viscius on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00pm.
Whether shooting from the vast wilds of Alaska, or the familiar Chicago alleys of her hometown, Alexa Viscius manages to create film portraits that feel like peering into a keyhole. Candid shots reveal coveted glimpses of beloved musicians: like New York Phenom Cameron Winter making adjustments to his musical arrangements backstage before his monumental solo performance at Hyde Park’s Rockefeller Church, or the sensational young Chicago band Horsegirl, running down a hill with a certain excitement and teenage-abandon of a group on the cusp of their breakout record, or a contemplative moment shared between longtime friends and prolific Chicago indie rockers Max Kakacek and Julien Elrich of Whitney, sitting in Kackek’s grandparent’s bedroom in Portman, Wisconsin. Many of her portraits, taken at her longtime studio in the historic Flatiron building in Wicker Park Chicago, retain that same sense of tenderness: A portrait of renowned New York musician, and frequent collaborator, Adrienne Linker of Big Thief, displays a sense of intimacy and trust. It’s a trust that has been earned through 20+ years of mastering her craft, allowing her subjects to open up, revealing themselves like flowers. From legendary Chicago DIY venues of yore, to international stages and all those quiet moments in between, she’s been there thru it all, with her finger on the shutter, capturing the music and the people that make it.

Event Details
Attend the EXPO reception for Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue by Ben Foch on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00pm.
“Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” is an exhibition of select works from Chicago artist Ben Foch that span the past 20 + years of his making. Some works are from the early 2000’s, never before exhibited, seminal beginnings. Some works are from the 2014-2018 era, created after the 1st and 2nd incarnations of his artist-run project space New Capital, and of course, something new from 2026 will be selected.
Cinderella, Dracula, Raiders Logo, Scotch Tape Plaid, Newport cigarettes, Tupac Shakur; these are some of the source content(s) that generate an origin narrative for the painting practice of Ben Foch. It could appear to be a contemporary interpretation of a Pop Culture narrative in art, and in the sense that Foch is engaged in discovering and/or defining an avant-garde in the 21st century, it is. Yet, his work, now in its mid-career mature phase, finds its roots in the 1960’s and 70’s Conceptual practices of On Kawara, Roman Opalka and Olivier Mosset. The only difference being the veneer.
This exhibition is a meditation on and a celebration of life dedicated to making. It’s important to tell our stories; to ourselves, so we can know who we are, to each other, so we can know one another, and to share them with the world at large, so we can manifest our being through shared acknowledgements of time and space. Stories can be told in many ways. This exhibition is an accounting that reflects one artist through a curated look of their past in the present.
We are the stories we tell ourselves.

Event Details
Attend the closing reception for Parallel Acts: A Practice of Staying by Soo Shin and Tim Stone on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00pm.
Parallel Acts: A Practice of Staying brings together two practices that understand gesture as a durational condition rather than a singular event. In both bodies of work, movement is sustained over time, and repetition becomes a means of transformation rather than reproduction.
In Shin’s ongoing series, Pas de Deux, Soo Shin constructs a buoyant vessel that floats in the Pacific Ocean while tethered to her body. Paper and pigmented wooden balls move freely within the structure, allowing ocean currents to register motion across the surface. Gesture emerges through sustained presence and shared agency between body, material, and environment, recorded as residue over time rather than intention.
Tim Stone’s works are formed through repeated return to a single drawing. By tracing and retracing his own marks over extended periods, he allows accumulation to alter the surface. Through accumulation, the surface slowly transforms: compression builds, sheen develops, and the drawing shifts toward another material state. Staying with the same gesture becomes a means of altering both surface and substance.
Placed together, these practices unfold as parallel acts of staying—where movement persists, time accumulates, and matter becomes the record of duration.

Attend the closing reception for Ptether me to the ground or let me float
on Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00-6:00pm.
Through the investigation of personal histories, familial ancestry, and the weight of place, the six ACRE alumni artists in tether me to the ground or let me float consider how we gather fragmented ideas of place and identity to piece together notions of belonging and grounding.
Grounding becomes a means of navigating obscured histories and solidifying ourselves, our ancestors, and our communities to a place. tether me to the ground or let me float examines how we ground ourselves within our own histories and how we become informed and infused by the places we occupy.
The exhibition questions the complexity of home, the relationship between the environment and the body, and the fragility of temporalities. Molded and shaped by the landscapes that surround them, the artists in the exhibition explore the multifaceted, imperfect, and often difficult undertaking of building an ecology of belonging that radically imagines our relationships to the ongoing history of a place.
Unearthing and breaking down these relationships, the artists reflect on space in relation to memory, migration, community, and spirituality. They consider the tangible traces of our presence and the ephemeral quality of the personal and ancestral histories that both tether and release us from the places we pass through and remain in. Place and home become at once stark and ephemeral in these narratives, inviting the viewer to imagine how we locate and ground ourselves within these complexities.

This powerhouse quartet delivers masterful musicianship, deep groove, and soul-stirring vocals—creating an unforgettable evening of jazz that spans styles, eras, and stories.
Bruce A. Henry is an internationally celebrated vocalist, composer, and educator whose three-and-a-half-octave range and genre-defying style have captivated audiences across five continents. Born in West Point, Mississippi and raised on Chicago’s West Side, Bruce began singing at the age of five in a Baptist church. His early musical influences included the refined swing of Count Basie and Duke Ellington, favorites of his pianist father. Though classically trained at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, Bruce followed his passion for improvisation and innovation, drawing inspiration from Nina Simone, Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane. His artistry has graced venues from Le Bilboquet in Paris to the National Theater of Havana, and he has performed alongside legends including Bobby McFerrin, The Sounds of Blackness, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, and Doc Severinsen. He has opened for music legends, Ramsey Lewis, Roberta Flack, Chris Botti, just to name a few. His voice and compositions have been heard on the BBC, Disney, HBO soundtracks and on national tv and radio commercials for Golden Graham Cereal, Skittles Candy and Whirlpool washing machines.
In addition to his performance career, Bruce is a dedicated educator and cultural ambassador. He is the founder of the Freedom Train Ensemble and Executive Director of The Evolution of African American Music, a celebrated lecture-performance series presented at institutions such as the Havana Conservatory, the University of Havana, and festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. Bruce’s discography includes Connections, One Living Soul, and Bruce A. Henry Live, and his recent appearances include the Chicago Jazz Festival, Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix, and the Chicago Blues Festival. In addition to singing, writing, and producing, Susie has also honed her skills as a recording engineer - enabling her to truly inhabit every layer of the creative process.
Susie released her highly anticipated single “Abigail” on October 24th, whose "dreamy hush works medicinally; it doesn’t push catharsis, it coaxes it" (Uranium Waves). The work is fueled by finding a home within oneself and asking: what does it mean to truly grow up… and do we ever?
Through heartfelt melodies and soul-stirring lyrics, Susie invites listeners into a shared space of introspection and re-invention - marking her a singular and invaluable talent in today’s music scene.

About:
Grammy-nominated Victor Garcia is a musical force to be reckoned with…
Examiner.com’s Neil Tesser calls him “one of the most exciting young musicians.” Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich says that he “stands out as an ebullient soloist offering a formidable technique and a radiantly polished tone.” JazzChicago.net’s Brad Walseth regards him as a “young lion trumpeter.”
He’s as versatile as he is creative. His trumpet talent heralds his international acclaim. He sings, plays percussion, and his songwriting, arrangements and charts have led him to professorial positions at Roosevelt University, Loyola University and the University of Illinois in Chicago.
The lineup of greats he’s performed with speaks for itself: Aretha Franklin, Arturo Sandoval, Spoon, Monty Alexander, Wynton Marsalis, Victor Manuelle, Nicholas Payton, La India, the Temptations, Steve Turre, BeBe Winans, Tito Puente, Jr., Paquito d’Rivera, Christian McBride, Randy Brecker, Branford Marsalis, The Isley Brothers, and Dr. John. About:
Step into one of Chicago’s most beautiful hidden gems for an intimate evening of piano music that goes far beyond the expected.
Pianist Olga Ridgway invites you on a journey through passion, imagination, and storytelling at the stunning Epiphany Center for the Arts. Whether you’re a lifelong lover of classical music or simply curious for a unique night out, this concert is designed to draw you in, surprise you, and leave you inspired.
The program pairs two extraordinary works:
Johann Sebastian Bach — Partita No. 6 in E minor
A powerful and deeply expressive masterpiece — intricate, emotional, and quietly mesmerizing.
Robert Schumann — Carnaval, Op. 9
A vivid musical story filled with playful characters, romance, humor, and drama — almost like a theatrical performance told entirely through music.
An internationally acclaimed pianist, Olga has performed across Europe and the United States, with appearances at venues including the Chicago Cultural Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Merkin Hall in New York City, and Carnegie Hall. Known for her expressive depth and captivating stage presence, she brings warmth and humanity to every performance.
Originally from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Olga’s musical journey has taken her from Europe to Chicago, where she now serves on the piano faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago.
But this evening is not about credentials — it’s about connection.
Set inside the breathtaking, candlelit atmosphere of Epiphany Center, this is a rare chance to experience world-class piano up close — where every note, every nuance, and every emotion is felt just a little more deeply.
Come for the music. Stay for the experience.

Synopsis: Through the stories of communities fighting for safe, affordable water and sanitation, Whose Water examines how the erosion of democracy prevents millions of people from accessing this basic necessity of life, and offers concrete solutions to address this unprecedented human rights crisis.
Accolades
-
"I have used Whose Water as an ideal teaching tool. The film has woven together compelling stories from a diverse set of people. As a teacher, I greatly appreciate how Whose Water foregrounds the voices of the activists and impacted people themselves, as opposed to featuring only the voices of “experts.” -Susan Gzesh, Instructional Professor of Social Sciences, University of Chicago

About:
Imagine if Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, T-Bone Walker and Bob Dylan got together to write a song for Twin Peaks— that’s Superfrye’s music.
A reverb-drenched guitar sits in the center of the stage. In Superfrye’s hands it becomes the sound of empowerment, rebellion, truth and freedom—wrapped up in storytelling of a folk artist diving headfirst into the struggles of real people; this is raw roots with soul. It bursts with outlaw and outsider energy, yet with full control Superfrye constantly toys with the edges of emotion, from haunting to hilarious and back again. With her vast catalog of originals and covers to draw from in styles from roots to flamenco, R&B to blues, lounge to punk, her songs bring you the sound of the terroir of the places she’s been and years she’s lived, as well as where she’s going next. Come along on the adventure.
Superfrye is an accomplished and innovative performer who has played all over Chicago, solo and with her band Superfrye & The Valiant ’72s. Highlights include a three-year residency at Rojo Gusano in Ravenswood, hosting and building a successful open mic at Artifact Events, as well as being featured with her band on WZRD 88.3 FM.

About Lilla Sol:
Lilla Sol is a Chicago-based sister duo that creates genre blending music rooted in storytelling. For these sisters, music is a means of cathartic expression; a key to deeper understanding of both personal and shared experiences. Their sound explores sonic realms that include piano, synth, cello, guitar, and lush vocal harmonies.
About Manasseh:
Manasseh is a Chicago South Side-born vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and creative director whose work bridges soul, R&B, jazz, and cinematic soundscapes. Raised in the church and influenced early on by his mother—a gifted vocalist—his musical foundation was shaped through years of choir singing, which continues to inform his emotive, technically precise vocal approach.
Currently working as a vocal/session coach, background vocalist, songwriter, and music supervisor, Manasseh is widely regarded as a trusted collaborator and “go-to” creative for artists across genres. His work has appeared in major cultural spaces and media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, EarMilk, and Ambient Vibez. His song “Inches” was featured on Tyler Perry’s BET hit series Sistas (Season 2, Episode 4).
In addition to his work as a recording and performing artist, Manasseh served as Music Supervisor for the short film Take 290, further expanding his footprint in visual media and narrative-driven sound design.
Manasseh has toured and collaborated with Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter Marquis Hill, contributed vocals to Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox, and joined international pop star JoJo on her Too Much To Say Tour and at the Taste of Chicago. He has also served as music supervisor for the short film Take 290, created original programming for Malcolm X College, and regularly headlines shows and high-end corporate events nationwide.
His debut album Monochromatic Dream was released in 2022, followed by EPs including Variations V1 – I’ll Be. His forthcoming album, R&B[eyond], arrives Spring 2026 and is already earning early praise, signaling a bold next chapter in his evolving artistic vision.
About Moyana:
MOYANA makes music that makes a difference. In the face of historical erasure, she creates an accessible living archive for her listeners through intentional lyrics and blending of R&B, hip-hop, and jazz.
In 2025, she released her debut album PTCHWRK, produced by 7VNTH, which was recognized by the Chicago Tribune, These Days Magazine, Vocalo, and the Chicago Reader. Her awards include the 3Arts Make-a-Wave Grant, the Black Music Action Coalition’s Victoria Monet x Music Maker Grant, the CITIBank LGBTQ+ Emerging Artist Award, the Recording Academy Quinn Coleman Scholarship, and the John Walt Foundation Young Artist Scholarship.
She currently serves on the board of the John Walt Foundation and is a voting member of the Recording Academy’s Chicago Chapter.
MOYANA works as a music educator with Chicago Opera Theater and the Lyric Opera of Chicago to uplift the next generation of artists, and offers private vocal coaching for performing professionals.

Attend the opening reception for The Desert as Mirror by Sarah and Joseph Belknap on Sunday, May 3rd, from 2:00-5:00pm.
We went to the desert for the eclipse. If we squinted, we could pretend we were on Mars.
We hadn’t been out of the city for a while and saw the biggest sky - it made us feel so incredibly tiny. We slept outside and ate outside and hiked outside.
We tried to look at every rock we passed. Everything was red and brown and felt so warm.
We brought our medium format film camera and photographed the landscape, something we both remember doing but hadn’t done together. The last time one of us intentionally shot the landscape was more than twenty years ago.
When we developed the film back at home, we could squint and pretend we had been to Mars.

Attend the opening reception for The Desert as Mirror by Sarah and Joseph Belknap on Sunday, May 3rd, from 2:00-5:00pm.
How Close Can You Get to a Stranger is an ongoing, evolving photographic series featuring a selection of images from a larger body of more than 2,000 photographs taken by Piper between 2018 and 2024 across Paris, Étretat, Bordeaux, Arcachon, and Biarritz.
How Close Can You Get to a Stranger is a continuous exploration of Piper’s recurring subject of choice - the stranger. To him, this proximity to the subject is an extension of his fascination with scales of intimacy. Arranged along a progressing gradient of proximity, far away landscapes sequentially become detailed portraits. Piper invites the viewer to perceive themselves through the eyes of a stranger, as if meeting for the first time - suspending the moment of first recognition as a practice of releasing judgements and an affirmation of an eternal gaze.
“To my subjects, you were once a passerby in my life, yet now I look at you, so intently”

Attend the opening reception for First Annual Chicago and Vicinity Riso Exhibition by Spudnik Press on Sunday, May 3rd, from 2:00-5:00pm.
The Chicago and Vicinity Riso Biennial is a regional exhibition celebrating risograph printing as it is being made right now across the Midwest. The show brings together artists from Chicago and Illinois along with the surrounding states — Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana — working in a medium defined by experimentation, accessibility, and the particular beauty of ink on paper.
Risograph printing occupies a unique space — rooted in zine culture and independent publishing, but increasingly embraced by artists pushing at the edges of what the process can do. Its layered spot colors, soy-based inks, and analog unpredictability make it a medium that rewards curiosity and collaboration.
This biennial is both a survey and a celebration, and a cheeky nod to the Art Institute of Chicago's now defunct Chicago and Vicinity exhibition. This show is a chance to bring Midwest riso work into conversation with itself and honor a tradition of showing regional art, grounded in the independent, artist-driven print culture of the Midwest.
This exhibition is a part of a summer of midwest riso exhibitions organized by Spudnik Press. A sister exhibition, 1st Annual Chicago and Vicinity Riso Exhibition, is curated by Duncan MacKenzie, Ryan Peter Miller, and Christopher Sperandio. will be taking place at Spudnik Press: 1821 W Hubbard St, #302, Chicago, IL 60622 from June 26-August 14, 2026 ( opening June 26, 6-8pm)

About:
Round two of a quarterly residency with Chicago artist and performer D. Jean Baptiste.
This spring, D. Jean-Baptiste brings together three pairs of artists.
Glen Bias -– The pairing of Bone Study and Lavotsky of Rent Control Records, among other endeavors,
Allen Moore and Nick Meryhew -– longstanding fervent and frequent collaborators within Chicago’s experimental scene, and
Dragonfruit -– Shravan Raghuram and Jean-Baptiste themself.
Each duo is made up of two incredibly talented, versatile, thoughtful, obsessive musicians. The performers within these pairs have created rats nests of their practices, collecting frequencies, drolleries, and histories, pouring it restlessly back into their various communities with earnest excitement.
This show deals with the ability to trust another human being with your life, your art, and your time.
Jean-Baptiste will curate two more shows during spring, summer, and fall of 2026, collaborating with a large cohort of creatives from across the city to turn the Catacombs into an immersive, multimedia exploration of science, emotion, and human behavior.

About:
We are the Cat Gaddis Project - an awesome Blues and R&B Band with talented Chicago area musicians.
Cat Gaddis Project performs an incredible live show with a core line-up of lead singer Cat Gaddis and tight rhythm section with awesome guitar, bass, drums & keyboards. Cat has played with Wayne Cochran and other bands from the past. We recently added a 3-piece horn section with saxophone, trombone, & trumpet - all are great musicians. See links below.

https://thecatgaddisproject.com/the-band
The Cat Gaddis Project live performance is a fun experience - with audiences tapping their feet, dancing, and grooving to the music. Cat Gaddis Project (CGP) played 2 shows at the Montrose Saloon earlier this year, and Buddy Guy's Legends on May 16. CGP also performed at the Alley Art Festival in Aurora, IL, Northcenter Town Square in Chicago, and outdoor festivals are great venues for the band. We also recently played at Old Elburn Hall, a BBQ Fest in the summer, and coming to the Epiphany Center for the Arts on Dec 5. The band has been in the studio recording new material; however, most of their repertoire are cover versions of well-known blues and r&b songs !
Come and see us at the Epiphany Center for the Arts on December 5

About:
Ellie Rui 瑞 is a Chicago-based Jazz drummer from Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Chicago shortly after graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the Spring of 2024. At Oberlin, Rui 瑞 studied with NEA Jazz Master Billy Hart for all 4 years.
Ellie Rui 瑞 is releasing her debut album, DayDreams Are Encouraged, the spring on May 19th. Rui 瑞 began writing DayDreams Are Encouraged in the summer of 2022 and recorded it here in Chicago in June 2025. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Klara Carrera, with cover art by Francesca Neibel-Spruill. In addition to Rui 瑞, it features musicians Chemutai Ruto, Takeru Satoh, J Renee, Anokyewaa Oppong, Rahsaan Nance, Aidan Marco, Francesca Neibel-Spruill, and Will Feeney. The album attempts to convey Rui 瑞’s experiences growing up with ADHD and OCD in a neurotypical world. It is a celebration of different ways of thinking. Rui 瑞’s compositions are typically characterized by a percussive approach, even when she is writing for other instruments. She generally follows a “jazz form” but her chord changes and rhythms are intentionally non-standard. For example, on the album’s first track, “DayDreamer,” Rui 瑞 utilizes different time signatures and feels to illustrate the multidirectional pull of ADHD—the constant diversion but also the thrill of new ideas. In the 6th track, “For This Moment”, Rui 瑞 conveys her experience with OCD, especially the push and pull of her mind and the struggle to stay present in the moment. The piece begins with a melodic motif that, as each instrument enters, gets offset by a half note. This creates a layered “sound collage” meant to approximate the disruptions caused by intrusive thought patterns. The album utilizes many different musical, lyrical, and compositional techniques, all in the service of conveying the feelings of a young person who doesn’t think in a standard way but who nonetheless manages to turn out OK.
Notable recent performances and projects by Rui 瑞 include recording with Pulitzer Prize winner Susie Ibarra, as a member of Ibarra’s CHAN Percussion Ensemble; playing with Colin Heshmat and Emma Dayhuff at Merriman’s Playhouse in South Bend, IN; playing with her own group “The Ellie Rui 瑞 Ensemble” at venues such as The Epiphany Center For the Arts, The Whistler, Clara, and Prairie Moon; playing with Chicago-based artist Elysia Marie as a member of her band; playing music at Holy Ground Sessions at Healthy Hood Chicago; playing with the Karli Bunn Ensemble in Birch Creek, WI; and doing a feature set with “The Ellie Rui 瑞 Ensemble” for Millie Ahearn’s Jam Session at Clara. In her performances, she often shares parts of her life story in the hope of bringing people together. Rui 瑞 likes to be around musicians and other people that remind her of the kind of human being she wants to be.
