About Lever:
About Dyslexicon:
Dyslexicon is the soul-searching and emotionally-driven music project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dan Hart. The project explores personal demons, traumas, memory loss, and surrealist imaginations told through dark and cinematic instrumentals. From quiet acoustic guitar passages and twinkling melody lines to blown-out percussion sections and bone-crushing distorted guitars, Dan and his dynamic 4-piece backing band will translate the project's eponymous debut into an intense listening experience

Karlos Piñero-Mercado
Puerto Rican tenor Karlos Piñero-Mercado (he/they) is extremely excited to be a young artist with Chicago Opera Theater for the 2022-2023 season. Karlos is a Chicago-based performer and new music enthusiast. They have had the privilege of working with new music composers like Nico Gutierrez and premiered the song cycle A Journey in Tattered Shoes which touches on the social justice and mental health issues of healing as a survivor of sexual assault. Karlos is passionate about performing the overlooked music of Latinx composers, especially the music of Puerto Rico, and bringing it to the mainstream audience. They are part of the newly formed quartet, Liederspiel Society, that allows them to explore the works of marginalized people, works that highlight social justice issues, as well as the underrepresented works by well known and obscure composers.
Karlos was recently seen on the Chicago stage singing as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel with Evanston Chamber Opera, The Composer at 70 - a concert of works by Francis Lynch and, prior to the COVID lockdown, in the chorus for the premiere of Freedom Ride by Dan Shore with Chicago Opera Theater. Other recent performances include: Rodolfo in a concert performance of Puccini's La Bohème, Howell and Whiteside in Lynch’s For those in Peril, La théière in Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges, Cornelius in Lynch’s Joseph’s Gift, The Lover in Menotti's Amelia Goes to the Ball, Eisenstein in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Dr. Cajus in Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Brother in Weill’s The 7 Deadly Sins. They have also had the pleasure to be the tenor soloist in concert works, including Stainer's Crucifixion, Haydn's Missa Sancti Nicolai, Schubert's Mass No. 4 in C major, Handel's Messiah and more.
Karlos is an alumni of the national music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. They received their Bachelor of Music from University of Central Florida and their Master of Music degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, studying under countertenor Mark Crayton.
Michelle Mariposa
Michelle Mariposa is a Filipino-Chinese mezzo-soprano who is passionate about communicating truth and beauty through music, poetry, and rhetoric. An enthusiast for new and underperformed music, Mariposa is looking forward to her residency as a young artist with the Chicago Opera Theater for the 2023-2024 season.
In the fall, Mariposa makes her debut with Haymarket Opera as an ensemble member in Francesca Caccini’s “La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola di Alcina.” Mariposa was an Apprentice Artist for Santa Fe Opera’s 2023 season, where she covered Pastore 3 in Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo.” Recent roles include Ruggiero in Handel’s “Alcina,” the title role in Menotti's "The Medium,” and Third Lady in Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte.” As a resident artist of Teatro Nuovo in 2022, Mariposa covered the role of Calbo in Rossini’s rarely performed “Maometto Secondo.”
In concert, Mariposa was recently one of the eight soloists in Berio’s “Sinfonia” with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, and the alto soloist in Handel’s “Messiah” with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Other concert performances include Bernstein’s “Mass,” with the Orchestra of Music Makers, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Bach's Magnificat. As a recitalist, Mariposa performed works such as Messiaen’s “Harawi,” and Schoenberg’s “Das Buch der hängenden Gärten.” She also enjoys programming music from her native Philippines, and has performed recitals of Filipino chamber music as a young artist of the FilAm Music Foundation NFP.
Mariposa made her Carnegie Hall debut as a finalist in the 2023 Lyndon Woodside Oratorio Solo Competition. She was also named honorable mention in the Shreveport Opera 2023 Singer of the Year Competition. In 2022, she won the Farwell Award from the Musicians Club of Women.

About:
Drawing from recorded conversations with veterans, David T. Little’s Soldier Songs combines classical music and heavy metal in a theatrical cantata that follows the life of a soldier in three phases: Youth, Warrior, and Elder. The highly-charged monodrama, with its driving music and unflinching libretto, offers a compelling and honest description of the psychological impact of war. Renowned bass-baritone Nathan Gunn stars in this powerful and haunting piece.

About:
Super Creeps is a Chicago-based David Bowie tribute. With all members playing in various bands until the COVID shutdown, Super Creeps only started in July of 2020 as a means to keep sane after music venues had closed. The members really liked David Bowie, so initially the impetus was just 5 guys getting together and playing some Bowie songs. One month later, having learned a dozen tunes, Super Creeps’ first performance was literally on an apartment building rooftop, playing for 15 socially-distanced people. The response was overwhelming – people cheering and watching from other surrounding buildings and an enthusiastic crowd had gathered in the alley below. The band knew they were onto something, and seeing the impact that Bowie had on their audience, decided to make Super Creeps a more serious venture. Using the entire Bowie catalog – spanning all eras, personas, and incarnations – Super Creeps has now amassed an impressive song list of Bowie material to choose from and is ready to steamroll you with the raw power, musical dexterity, and vocal prowess of Bowie through the decades.
Rocks Off is Chicago's premier and authentic Rolling Stones tribute, delivering the music, the look, and the attitude of the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band! Whether it’s deep album cuts or your favorite live version, Rocks Off captures the Jagger moves, Keef riffs, Charlie Watts' groove, and the blazing Mick Taylor solos from their golden era of 1968-1973, a la Ladies and Gentlemen and Brussels Affair. But let's not overlook the songs of the mid 60's that launched the Stones as rock and roll superstars; Rocks Off nails all your favorites from the Brian Jones and Ronnie Wood eras. If you want to see the next best thing to being there 50 years ago, come and see Rocks Off for yourself at Epiphany’s Main Hall!

Marcus Bailey is a singer/songwriter and guitarist born in Columbus, Ohio. In 2019 he moved to Chicago, IL to pursue his dream in music and to attend Columbia College Chicago, where he graduated with a major in CJP Bmus. As a songwriter, his music falls under many genres. From pop/rock to singer/songwriter as well as rnb/soul and blues. His influences range from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Stevie Wonder to Green Day and Elton John. He has released multiple singles and has also done songwriting, arranging and vocal work with other bands like Oracle Blu and Disco Lemonade. Marcus began his journey from a young age joining his church’s choir. It was there that he cultivated his love for music and singing with the help of his family's support. Marcus uses his music to help understand the many ups and downs of life and what those emotions mean. He hopes to give listeners something to relate to and also to help in their own understanding of life. He recently released his third single titled “Don’t Waste My Time” available to stream on all platforms and is preparing to put out his debut EP “Untitled” soon.
Ian Jake Robleza is a 22 year-old Filipino American singer-songwriter/audio engineer from Aurora, Illinois. He produces mostly acoustic music, but draws from many different genres (easy rock, rap, indie folk/rock, musical theater, etc.) and hopes to deliver eclectic, energetic, and emotional performances to any audience, no matter the size. From intimate ballads to crowd sing-alongs, he recounts intricate feelings with vulnerability, passion, and a fondness for human connection.
Throughout the self-release of his first two albums and a handful of singles, Ian continues to finish his studies at Columbia College Chicago, majoring in Audio Arts and minoring in Philosophy.
His latest EP is the turn of a new leaf- “How I’ve Been” is an oddly personal insight into a new chapter of his young adult life. Opening with the title track, “Wabash Ave” propels us into his new surroundings, encountering themes of exploration, self-image, and infatuation. The second track, “Liana”, only takes us deeper into that personal rabbit hole, as we find ourselves asking the question of who the song was really written about. “Taking a Toll” is the slower third track, reflecting on the aftermath of the pandemic, and how we go about making a connection with people again after all that isolation. The final track, “Qualia” is a candid response to the age-old question: “Why do you love them?” as he attempts to explain how falling in love is a deeply personal experience that no one could ever perfectly encapsulate through words alone.
This next collection of songs sees Ian at his most professional, yet most lighthearted, taking the listener through this brief moment in the beginning of his 20s.

Byrne, Siouxsie Sioux, Jeff Buckley, and Elliott Smith, her shows feature an eclectic range of music across many genres. Vocally, she specializes in folk and rock genres, having grown up a block away from The Old Town School of Folk Music, where she first started performing. Mara is currently in the process of writing her first EP in the folk-rock genre, but you can expect to hear a lot of punk and new wave covers at her shows as well that add to her overall edgy vibe.

About Macie Stewart:
Macie Stewart is a multi-instrumentalist, composer/arranger, songwriter, and improviser based in Chicago, IL who Downbeat Magazine calls “a master of equilibrium.” Stewart’s instrumental work primarily includes piano, violin, voice, guitar, and synthesizers. From a very young age she found herself drawn towards music and sound; learning to communicate with music while simultaneously learning to communicate with words. As the child of a career musician (pianist Sami Scot), Stewart was encouraged to explore the piano and violin through classical training which led to teaching herself guitar and composing music for herself and others. After helping to found the Chicago bands Kids These Days and Marrow, Stewart broadened their interests and spent time in the avant-garde jazz scene, performing regularly at Chicago institutions Constellation and The Hungry Brain. It was in that scene Stewart distinguished herself as a go-to collaborator, co-founding the band Finom, (with Sima Cunningham); forming an improvised duo and longstanding artistic collaboration with cellist and sound artist, Lia Kohl (Macie Stewart & Lia Kohl); performing and improvising with Ken Vandermark’s Marker ensemble; and creating as the improvised trio, The Few (with guitar player Steve Marquette and bassist Charlie Kirchen). Stewart has toured as a multi-instrumentalist with bands such as Japanese Breakfast, The Weather Station, Chance The Rapper, Makaya McCraven, and Tweedy. Stewart has also spent years working as a string arranger, drawing on her varied background in classical, jazz, and Irish folk music to create unique arrangements for artists such as the band Whitney, SZA, V.V. Lightbody, Knox Fortune, and many others.

Bearduo is a saxophone duo consisting of Garrett Frees on Tenor Saxophone and Aaron Kaufman-Levine on Alto Saxophone. They met seven years ago at Birch Creek Music Camp, and quickly became close friends. Their friendship and musical collaboration continued to grow as they both served on the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Jazz Links student council. Bearduo's musical journey continued as they both pursued their studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, where they developed their deep musical connection playing together daily for four years.
Over the years, they have performed at prestigious venues such as the historic Jordan Hall, Lilypad Inman, MIT’s Killian Hall, Tufts University’s Granoff Music Center, the Worcester, MA radio station WICN, Fulton Street Collective, and the Music in the Garden concert series.
Bearduo brings a unique and spontaneous creation to each performance that reflects their shared musical language and deep connection. Their sound draws on the innovations of Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Ornette Coleman, and Eric Dolphy. Bearduo aims to push the boundaries of the saxophone and free improvisation through the synthesis of different improvisational methodologies.
Aaron Kaufman-Levine is a Chicago based saxophonist, composer and improviser. Aaron is an active performer in the Chicago-area, and has led his group at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Constellation, Fulton Street Collective, and more, playing with creative musicians around the US, such as Ken Vandermark, Miguel Zenon, Mehmet Ali Sanlikol, Rajiv Halim, Nanette Frank. After graduating high school, Garrett decided to attend New England Conservatory to study with Jerry Bergonzi, Miguel Zenon, Melissa Aldana, Frank Carlberg, and Donny McCaslin. Garrett was in the NEC Jazz Honors Ensemble during his third and fourth year at New England Conservatory. Garrett has performed and worked with many amazing artists, including Cecil McBee, Dave Holland, Ran Blake, Ric Wilson, Scott Burns, and Anna Webber, among others. Garrett regularly performs with groups based in Boston and Chicago including “Bearduo”, “fakeart”, “Free Will”, and “Summer Snowfall”. About Kick the Cat:
Based in Chicago and Nashville, Kick The Cat is an internationally renowned fusion quartet. Musically, the band falls within the virtuosic lineage of classic fusion and prog ensembles like Return to Forever and Weather Report but draws on contemporary groove elements, electronics, and a healthy dose of humor. The result is a heady, yet approachable, combination of mind-bending rhythms, harmonies, and kaleidoscopic textures.
The band formed while in college in the late 1990s, performing one another’s unique and challenging compositions. At the time, the four musicians lived together and worked on their music while also individually making names for themselves in the Chicago music scene. Over the last twenty years Kick The Cat has released three full length albums of original material and has performed hundreds of shows, headlining and opening for national acts such as Umphrey’s McGee, Vital Information, Oz Noy, Jazz Mandolin Project, John Novello, Stu Hamm, and more. KTC has long been noted as being one of the most engaging ensembles to emerge from Chicago’s richly varied scene.

The band points a focus on composing interesting, thought-provoking music and danceable grooves, while exploring uncharted territory through improvisation every night, assuring no performance is ever the same. The band knows no boundaries. Alabaster has shared the stage with members of the Grateful Dead, Parliament Funkadelic, Billy Strings and more.
In 2019, the band released the first single on their self-titled debute EP and was featured as an honorable mention in NPR’s Tiny Desk competition. Alabaster released their single "Excellent Idea" in December, 2022. A new series of singles are slated to come out for the rest of 2023. Alabaster is available for performances and would enhance any show in the rock/fusion/jamband/jazz genres

About:
From the depths of the deep dark web comes HalloSEEN, a queer horror showcase. We invite you to spend the evening with us to enjoy a program of moving images provided by the macabre, monstrous and the metrosexual. This multi city Chicago/Milwaukee event focuses on underground and independent queer horror that dissects the intersection of “the other” and the monster. SEEN is taking open call submissions for moving image work to screen here in Chicago as well as Milwaukee. Submission forms and website can be found via Linktr.ee/seenmke
SEEN is a queer collective of young, fresh moving image makers and curators who aim to disrupt the system of pay to show festivals and censored queer spaces. Through collaboration with other community driven and alternative art spaces, SEEN highlights self defined and nonconformist works in aims to build the foundation for the rise of the Cinematic Gaze/Gayz. About:

Blxckwell (George Blackwell III) is a 21 year-old African American and Puerto Rican singer–rapper-songwriter/audio engineer from Oak Park, Illinois. He is inspired by Jon Bellion, Nic D, and Russ, having a genreless identity and wants to be known for making all kinds of music. Even though this is his first show he was classically trained through grade school with performances locally and internationally. Throughout the self-release of his first 10 singles he continues to finish his studies at Columbia College Chicago, majoring in Music Tech. Blxckwell hopes to deliver to his audience an ambitious and introspective outlook on life, creating self-portraits through his music.

About:
The Last Word Quintet is a collaboration between four of Chicago's best musicians and songwriters with Marc Kelly Smith, performance poet, founder of the Uptown Poetry Slam and a leader of the worldwide poetry slam movement. Marc's performance of original and classic poetry meshes seamlessly with Al Day's vocals and lyrics to illustrate multi-dimensional tales of urban life.
Al Day has been hailed "Most Promising Songwriter" by Chicago Magazine and has appeared in clubs and colleges throughout the United States and on radio and TV shows as WFMT's "Midnight Special" and WTTW's "Sound Stage." Beyond collaborating as a musician and writer with Last Word members, Al has written librettos for several of Doug Lofstrom’s musical theater works, including the opera Two Soldiers.
Bob Long has performed as a composer and jazz pianist nationally and internationally at the Chicago Jazz Festival twice, JVC Jazz Festival in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. He and saxophonist Brian Gephart have recorded six CDs with the GephartLong Quartet for the Birch Tree label. Al and Bob have been musical collaborators for many years and Bob has been a musical part of Marc’s poetry slam on and off for decades.
Marc Kelly Smith is creator and founder of the Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill Club in Chicago. Chalking more than 2000 performances in clubs, concert halls, and festivals in the United States and Europe, Marc continues to host and perform every Sunday night at the Green Mill, while always looking for new projects – such as the Last Word – to broaden the space for contemporary verse.
Bassist Doug Lofstrom has been composing prolifically since the 1970’s and his works have been performed by the St. Louis, Atlanta and Oregon Symphony Orchestras. In 2001, he formed The New Quartet, a versatile chamber ensemble which performs his original music and arrangements of modern classics, jazz and world music. He has taught music at Columbia College in both a full-time and part-time capacity since 1986. Over the years, he has collaborated with Al Day on numerous songs and musical theater projects.
Saxophonist Brian Gephart leads his own jazz sextet, the Brian Gephart Group. He has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Chicago Jazz Festival, the Taste of Chicago, and most of the Chicago jazz clubs. Besides teaching private lessons, Brian also coaches the jazz combos at Evanston Township High School. The Last Word has adapted several of the many songs that Brian has written.
The Last Word has released two CD’s with a third on the way. Visit their website at www.lastwordquintet.com

The Bach + Beethoven Experience presents The Story of Pa I Sha
Date: Wednesday, November 8, 2023
Doors: 5PM for Golden Hour
Showtime: 7PM
Tickets: $20 - General admission | $60 - VIP table for 2 | $10 - Student
The first story is about Pa I Sha herself, who was full-blood Chickasaw and walked the Trail of Tears (or, more correctly, called The Removal by the Chickasaw tribe) in 1837 from her home in Mississippi to her new nation in Oklahoma as part of the Indian Removal Act. In Oklahoma, she married her husband, another full-blood Chickasaw, who also walked this trail. The second story is about Pa I Sha’s daughter, Mary Sheco, who was also full-blood Chickasaw, but married an Englishman. Because interracial marriages with the tribe were taboo at the time, they were forced to live in a railroad tent outside of town with their nine children. Their children and grandchildren were discriminated against to the point that some did not declare their full degree of Indian blood, or in some cases, dropped their indigenous identity altogether when required to register. Pa I Sha’s great grandson, Earnest Thaxton, is the last of Brandi’s relatives on the Dawes Rolls from Indian Territory. He was born in Indian territory before Oklahoma became a state in 1906. The third story is about how Brandi’s great grandfather Earnest Thaxton met her great grandmother, Sarah Elvera Tannehill. She had come to Texas from Illinois on a train when she was 12 years old around Christmastime. Her parents had told her that there would be no presents that year, but that they would still celebrate Jesus' birth. When they arrived, her family was invited to dinner by the people of the town and were given presents after all. The girls were given corn husk dolls and the boys were given whittled animals that were made for them. After Earnest moved to the Texas panhandle, he met and married Sarah, who gave birth to Brandi’s maternal grandfather.
In partnership with the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, the Bach & Beethoven Experience (BBE) will premiere this work in November 2023 as part of Native American Heritage month. Using melodies from the Chickasaw Nation, the instrumentation of this work will include a narrator/vocalist, flute, Native American flute, violin, viola, cello, and percussion. The narration will be mostly in English, but will include some Chickasaw language in telling these stories.
About the BBE
The Bach + Beethoven Experience (BBE), a Chicago-based period instrument ensemble, makes classical music into community by building personal connections between our audience and our artists through stories, music, and interactive experiences. For this premiere, the instrumentation will include BBE co-directors violinist Brandi Berry Benson and flautist Leighann Daihl Ragusa, Choctaw vocalist and narrator Rachael Youngman, violin/violist Kiyoe Matsuura, cello, percussion, and more.
