LOOMSTATE refers to the condition of a fabric as it comes off the loom: warp and weft just recently interlaced, a system of relationships between vertical and horizontal just established. The piece isn't finished but the terms have been set. The fabric coming off the loom feels like the end of something, and it is. But it's also a beginning. Weaving is a line and also a loop.
LOOMSTATE asks us to see the reality of a cloth, but differently animated; to see the difference between subtle and gross movements; to see the actions and objects that accumulate around and contribute to the cloth itself. Cloth as starting point and ending point. Or just a point.
The Weaving Mill is an artist-run industrial weaving studio in Chicago. Working in the space between the hand and industrially made, TWM aims to bring the mechanics of textile production into wider view. TWM designs and produces fabric-by-the-yard, clothing and home goods, often in small batches, with a focus on deadstock and thoughtfully-sourced materials. Since 2015, TWM has developed a unique model blending design, production, research and education, working with a diverse roster of collaborators across design and fine art. In partnership with social services agency Envision Unlimited, TWM runs a handweaving program for adults with developmental disabilities, hosts an annual artist-in-residence program, and maintains a natural dye and fiber garden and seed library.
The Weaving Mill team consists of Emily Winter, Kendall Schauder and Clara Wolff.
