ARTIST STATEMENT:
This painting represents my personal journey as a Filipino-American. Having been born in the Philippines to a Filipina mother and a father of European descent from Michigan, I struggled with an internal tension growing up in the US. In my younger years I would toggle between embracing or suppressing my Filipino identity. Presenting my Filipino side made me “different” and thus often threatened my desire for safety and belonging. The two petunias represent this dynamic, as one identity would take center stage while the other receded into the shadows. The forest represents my life-long quest to find my deep Filipino roots hidden among the wild jungles of Abuyog on the island of Leyte. I often encounter these locations in my dreams after traversing corridors leading to a hidden dimension of reality in which the spirits of my Filipino ancestors and bizarre mythical beings lay awaiting their discovery once again.
ARTIST BIO:
Peter Stewart Tobio Stover is an artist, ethnographer, transformational leader and coach. He is half Filipino, born in Tacloban City, Philippines, and American. He has spent several decades documenting creative cultures formed around the evolution of electronic music in the US. He currently lives in Chicago and works as Visual Art Educator, curriculum designer, mentor and coach for Chicago Public Schools district. He has just completed his doctorate degree in transformational leadership and coaching from Maharishi International University. His dissertation was focused on helping professionals become more trauma-engaged in their work settings. His ultimate mission is to discover, translate and transmit the cultural memes that will elevate humanity to a higher level of consciousness and organize the global civilization of the future.
