It is fitting that Kateri Tekakwitha, devoted protector of the natural world, was the first Native saint. She grew up in northern New York state, where she developed a life-long connection to the forests, fields, rivers and wildlife that nourished her Mohawk and Algonquin ancestors. With this portrait, I honor her reverence for the earth that sustains us all.
