About:
Converging innovative musical writing with a passion for improvisation, Retrospect is a new emerging band on the Chicago jazz scene. Rooted in the voice of American music, the band's journey began as a senior recital band at Columbia College Chicago. This group boasts five instrumentalists, with composer and saxophonist Ben Jossi, Jackson Arbogast on guitar, Miles Pretel on keys and piano, Ethan Davila on bass, and Hugh Maxey on drums, the lineup was set.
Their music is a captivating blend of past and present, where jazz's improvisational spirit dances with Latin rhythms, hip hop beats, soulful blues, and a sprinkle of American roots. This unique fusion began during Ben's senior recital aptly titled "Retrospect." Soon, they headlined at Manifest, Columbia's spring arts festival, under the name "Ben Jossi's Retro Collective."
But it was their recording at Sessions@33, a Columbia production akin to a tiny desk concert, that solidified their identity as Retrospect. With some new members that brought a powerful sound, the name stuck. For Retrospect, their music identifies with jazz's limitless possibilities and adds to the allure of genre-blending. It goes beyond music; it's storytelling through the musical language this group performs with.

About:
The Diego Rodriguez Big Band, commonly known as the DRBB, emerged onto the Chicago jazz scene in December 2022 with a profound commitment to the art form and a dedication to preserving the legacy of big band music.
Led by drummer Diego Rodriguez, this ensemble stands as a testament to the enduring traditions of Black American Music. Rooted in the greats who laid the foundations of this music, the DRBB reverently pays homage to their contributions while simultaneously aiming to create their own sound. Their repertoire is marked by a fusion of standard repertoire and original arrangements/compositions, encapsulating the essence of both the past and the present.
For the DRBB, the connection among its members is not merely professional but deeply personal. Comprising Diego's closest friends, the band operates as a cohesive unit, much like an extended musical family. This close-knit bond transcends the stage and recording studio, infusing their performances with a profound sense of unity and shared purpose. The band's journey has been punctuated by notable achievements in the Chicago music scene, including performances and recording sessions alongside accomplished musicians such as Marques Carroll, Jeremy Kahn, Kevin King, Abigail Riccards, Victor Garcia, and Kellin Hanas.
The remainder of 2023 and the approaching new year promise to be an ambitious chapter for DRBB. The ensemble is currently recording their debut album. This album will showcase brand new original arrangements and compositions, and feature musicians Victor Garcia, Dan Nicholson, Kellin Hanas, Arman Sangalang, Maggie Kinney, Neal Alger, and Marquis Hill. Additionally, the band is gearing up for a series of performances at high schools in the South suburbs, where they aim to nurture an appreciation for jazz and inspire the next generation of musicians.
