About:
Indigo X Tromblau will be an evening of musical exploration and storytelling. We invite You to join us for two sets of original compositions all rooted in music of the Black and Jewish Diasporas. This show is an extension of Indigo Sessions, a show series founded by Aliyah Jones, meant to celebrate and nurture the artistry of Black Women and Queer artists. Indigo is excited to watch the series evolve with each new space it exists within.
Indigo is a musical collective led by Aliyah Jones. Aliyah Jones is a vocalist, composer, and curator based in Chicago, IL. The importance of music was instilled in her at an early age. Every milestone, celebration, or simple journey to school was scored with anything from the sultry serenades of Whitney Houston to the invigorating bounce of house music. Aliyah began her formal training at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artist and most recently graduated from the Jazz Studies program at DePaul University. The music of Indigo centers her love of storytelling and exploration, while honoring the traditions of Jazz, RnB, and Neo-Soul.
Tromblau&Friends is a Chicago based band established by trombonist Emma Blau in May 2022. The band plays Emma’s original compositions which seek to emma-u-late her life through sound. Inspired by Black American Music and Jewish Music her compositions combine freedom, play, and prayer in the pursuit of creating and entering alternate realities. Tromblau&Friends have performed at numerous venues in the Chicagoland area such as Fulton Street Collective, Andersonville Arts Weekend, Prairie Moon, The California Clipper, Dorothy's Downstairs, Clara, and The Whistler. Emma has also performed her music in London at Oliver’s Jazz Bar. Emma has a bi-weekly DJ residency in Andersonville where she spins vinyl. She recently established a new jam session in Chicago, “The Playdate” in partnership with food justice organizer and DJ, Nick Davis aka nick2bomb. The jam session encourages musicians and attendees alike to access the imagination of childhood. This session invites DJ nick2bomb to be the fifth member of a quintet combining House, Disco, Hip-Hop and Jazz.

About:
Raised in a musical Mexican American family, Miguel de León remembers connecting deeply to the sounds of music he heard around him while growing up. As a child he responded strongly to the radio hits of Mexican artists in his parent's record collection. His extended family often came together to celebrate holidays and birthdays. As a treat, Mariachis were often part of the festivities - memories of Mariachis playing still holds a very special place in his heart.
Miguel's strong affinity for Brazilian music began when he was a teenager after hearing recordings by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. Already bilingual, he discovered through these recordings how similar Portuguese was to Spanish, and learned to pronounce and understand many phrases and themes of the songs. In 1985 Miguel made his first trip to Brasil and was enraptured by the people, the culture, and the music. He stopped in a record shop in Rio and bought so many albums that he had to pay excess baggage fees on his return trip home.
THE PERFORMER
A very active performer in both church music and choral ensembles, Miguel has also appeared in numerous operettas, zarzuelas and musical theater productions. In addition he has developed a solo show featuring many different styles of Latin American music. His songs range from rhythmic salsa and classic boleros to the smooth sounds of Samba and Bossa Nova. While performing Miguel uses his gift for languages; he might sing one verse of "The Girl From Ipanema" or "Corcovado" ("Quiet Nights") in Portuguese and then switch to Spanish or English for the next verse. Songs such as these are easily performed in two languages, since both English and Portuguese versions are widely known. Miguel's CDs "Postcards From Rio" and "Navidad/Natal" feature popular Brazilian and Latin American songs sung in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
MALANDRO CD: Miguel de León's goal is to use his gift of music as a means to bridge the gap between different musical styles and languages. Continually exploring and learning about the world of music. Miguel clearly sees that despite the apparent differences across musical forms, there are many thematic similarities. He believes the underlying theme of music is love and that music is a force that can bring people together. During the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, Miguel went into a studio to craft his latest work: “Malandro”. In this endeavor, Miguel collaborated with Brazilian pop singer, Leila Pinheiro, as well as Brazilian Saxophonist: Leo Gandelman. The album was produced by Jazz great, David Feldman.

Luciano's performance takes the audience on a tour of Brazil by presenting a wide variety of Brazilian compositions combined with his own originals. In his Performance Luciano contrasts songs that have rich and complex harmonies and melodies with simple rhythms against songs that have simple harmonies and melodies with very complex rhythms, and the dynamics range from pure solo guitar and voice to the full sound of the rich Brazilian percussion in a fascinating musical way. Luciano released three albums, two of which are original music "Vida De Artista - An Artist's Life" in 2011 and “Sem Palavras – Without Words” in 2015. His 3rd Album is a 'Live Concert" at the prestigious Jazz Showcase. Make no mistake; Luciano has placed his stamp on the Brazilian music scene in Chicago.
