Karen Gubitz
MATERIALS MATTER

Slemmons Gallery

November 10, 2023 to January 20, 2024

As a fiber sculptor, Karen Gubitz first and foremost considers herself a materialist. Her exploration of materials and their relationship to the dimensional constructed surface takes advantage of their potency, limitlessness, and pliability. Some of her work explores lines and shapes to create patterns. Other work uses the flexibility of the fiber to wrap and fold to build dimensionality.

Experimenting with various craft techniques, she studies the properties of materials to extract their highest possible resiliency and surface potential. As the noted fiber artist and educator, Warren Seelig wrote: “When you experience a place it is the materiality that you engage with, and it is the expressiveness of that materiality that makes the place memorable and rich.”
