Marilyn Artus
HER FLAG

Chase House

August 10, 2024

Her Flag is a nationwide art and travel project created by artist Marilyn Artus to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment (2020) and the 72 years long nonviolent fight that kicked open voting for women in the United States.

Marilyn collaborated with a woman artist from each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment into law to create a HUGE 18 x 26 foot flag. Each artist created artwork inspired by this anniversary that Marilyn turned into a stripe. Marilyn began traveling in order of ratification in June of 2019 to each state and in a public performance, stitched each stripe onto Her Flag until February of 2020 when Covid 19 hit the United States.

Marilyn got to 25 of the 36 states, before stopping the travel. She moved to live streaming the sewing performances as originally scheduled. Her Flag was completed on August 18th, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Her Flag has been exhibited at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. and makes its first Midwest appearance at Epiphany Center for the Arts to amplify women’s voices during this pivotal election year.
