ARTIST STATEMENT:
I did my fair share of making art portraying the Philippine flag as a kid using pencil, crayons, colored paper and even eggshells (created a mosaic colored with watercolor). This piece is my abstracted “adult” version of it, a product of more than 2 decades of life experiences living in the United States. I used a paper collage of Sampaguita flowers instead of the 3 stars (representing Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) which evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of how much I miss its fragrant smell.
ARTIST BIO:
Neil Ybanez is a Chicago-based physician artist. His earliest memories of making art are of doing charcoal portrait drawings of Jose Rizal and Jesus Christ as a child growing up in the Philippines. Neil enjoys experimenting with a wide variety of methods and mediums, from pencil and ink sketches to watercolor, pastel, acrylics, and oils. He is drawn to landscapes both natural and urban as well as abstract art. His art as a Filipino American reflects the life experiences that have expanded and enriched how he now sees the world in terms of lines, shapes and color.
