“I can’t breathe”
How can I be alive if I can’t breathe?
The world presses its hands around my neck. My breath catches. My body, exhausted, remembers too much.
I’ve found a space. A space carved out by necessity.
A sanctuary? A holding place? A threshold.
And if I let you in, will there be enough air for both of us?
Between Stolen Breaths is a performative ritual. It lives in the tension between movement and stillness.
To sigh is to speak.
To gasp is to remember.
To pant is to mourn.
Breathing is not just biological; it is political, spiritual, and ancestral. To breathe in this body is to insist on presence, even when breath is denied. In every held inhale and exhale, my body learns the cost of air.
