ARTIST STATEMENT:
In my work, I transform the seemingly ordinary keychain into a powerful medium for personal narrative and cultural symbolism. As a first-generation Filipino-Polish American, I take pride in showcasing my heritage through these kitschy objects. Keychains, though practical, serve as extensions of our identities. This piece encapsulates Filipino culture and nationalism, integrating symbols, materials, and designs that resonate with both myself and the Filipino community. Each keychain reflects intimate aspects of Filipino life—food, religion, pastimes, and humor—transformed into a playful, oversized souvenir. Crafted from found objects, inherited photos, and various art supplies, these keychains become more than functional items; they are storytelling devices. Through this art, I elevate the keychain from its utilitarian role to a symbol of cultural and personal identity. By magnifying this everyday object, I invite viewers to explore how small items can profoundly reflect the richness of our stories and heritage.
