Artist Statement

This collaborative tapestry was created by Thresholds art therapists during their weekly clinical supervision groups.  In a similar way to the theme of Identity: Perspectives of Y(OUR)selves, this piece can be studied at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.  Started with foil coils, each piece has been wrapped individually by an art therapists’ chosen fibers.  As these pieces were created, our art therapists had the opportunity to reflect on their role in their client’s lives, within their community of Thresholds, and the wider mental health field.  Each coil is in response to the difficulties faced and triumphs experienced during a tumultuous year.  They describe growth and resiliency, both personally and observed with our clients.  They were then puzzle-pieced together to form a whole unit; which can then further symbolize the connection and support our art therapists have for one another.

The different layers or levels the shapes in the drawing represent layers of identity or personality that a person can share or not share with others. The drawings also remind me of wood grain, of inner and outer growth. Thank you.
