MUSIC TO MY SOUL
Sanctuary Hall Gallery
January 18, 2024 to March 1, 2024
The City of Chicago is recognized as the “Heart of Soul” with music legends such as Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Betty Everett, and more, launched from Vee Jay and Brunswick Records on historic Record Row; a ten-block stretch of Chicago's South Michigan Avenue where several independent record companies produced blues, R&B, jazz, and soul music from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s. These artists spurred a revolution that has inspired both established and emerging soul artists to this day. Although Chicago is known globally as a city with deep roots in soul, it is not holistically celebrated nor is it recognized locally. In collaboration with Overflow After Dark Productions, Music to my Soul aims to inform, celebrate, and expose both the histories, legacy, and contributions of Chicago soul music. The series documents twelve Chicago musicians: six seasoned and with historic roots to Record Row, and six emerging artists who are creating a new era of soul music in the Windy City.

Yolanda Chioma Richards is a Chicagoland-based photographer who fell in love with the craft after a season of self-care and rest. In 2015, she established Imagery by Chioma LLC, a photography business that captures unforgettable moments in time and specializes in events and portraits. In June 2023, Yolanda launched her third photo series titled Music to my Soul in collaboration with Overflow After Dark Productions, photographing 12 Chicago artists who shared their experiences in the music industry. Although her roots stem from Southern California, Yolanda has called the Chicagoland area her home since 2011. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her loved ones, strengthening her skills in photography, playing instruments, deepening her faith, and laughing as much as she possibly can.
Overflow After Dark Productions (OAD Productions) provides a space for creative entrepreneurs to prosper. Founded by Liv Roskos Peterson, OAD Productions is located in the historic home of Vee Jay and Brunswick Records, two formerly Black-owned recording studios that supported several artists during the 50s and 60s. OAD Productions aims to preserve the legacy of music by empowering Chicago artists so they can prosper and be supported through their musical journey.
