Jacob Slocum is an artist who approaches music through the lens of Jazz. He is firmly rooted in an ethos of Soulfulness (the Blues, the music of the Black Church, and the tradition of Jazz), but he lives by Charlie Parker's words there is no boundary line to art. Jacob is an artist easily at home in a variety of settings and genres, secular or sacred, instrumental or choral. Jacob's voice as an instrumentalist is expressed on the baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, and bass saxophone.

Jacob's voice as a composer is expressed through his orchestra Jacob's Ladder, a contemporary orchestra with some of the best
musicians around who happen to reside in Chicago. With the virtuosity and versatility of everyone in this orchestra, Jacob's Ladder can effortlessly express whatever genre Jacob's eclectic music calls for. Jacob's Ladder is also a gathering of kindred spirits whose performances are full of life and fellowship. Jacob's Ladder performances feel like a beautiful synthesis of a church service and a family reunion.
