About the Show:

An evening length performance piece, TETHER explores the concepts of relationality and attachment. Starting with our first tether, the umbilical cord, and expanding out to the web of relationships we develop throughout our lives, this performance muses on the question: how arethese tethers related?

Beginning and ending in full dark, this piece follows the performers as they navigate being bound together via a sheer fabric loop. Watson moves between synthesizer stations, pushing and pulling amidst the loop as Bernier bends and stretches, creating a physical dialogue between the two as Bernier both aids and obstructs movement between instruments. Borges pivots between two projectors, a free hand portable projector, and an overhead projector with which she creates live visual collages that are cast across the fabric loop. Together, the three envelop the audience in a visual and sonic narrative of connection and loss, asking: what do we do when the tether breaks?

About the Music:

TETHERʼs musical score is made up of outputs from three euro rack modular synthesizers embedded in a prerecorded electronic tape part that features custom convolution reverbs, creating the illusion of various enclosures over the course of the piece. Each individual output from the synthesizers acts as an autonomous sound source, morphing and transforming throughout the course of the performance, bending and blurring with one another via cross synthesis. Over the course of the piece, patches are constructed and altered, continually moving the listeners through a dynamically layered and evolving sonic environment. TETHERʼs tape part features custom convolution reverbs applied to field recordings taken in fall of 2023 in Chicago, IL.

About the Performers:

Kari Watson (b.1998, they/them) is a composer, performer, and sound artist working between the mediums of contemporary concert music, electroacoustic music, live performance, and interactive installation work. As a performer playing analog synthesizer, they engage a customizable spatialization software built in MaxMSP with spatial speaker arrays to further explore issues of tactility and drama in immersive sonic environments. Watson is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago on a full fellowship from the Division of the Humanities where they teach computer music.

Lua Borges is a Brazilian filmmaker, visual artist, and photographer based in Chicago, IL. With a BA in Cinema Arts & Science from Columbia College Chicago, she pursues the analog medium as a means to construct works that evoke psycho-sensorial and emotive experiences around themes of grief, memories, decay, and kinesthesia. Beyond her roles as a director and assistant director, Lua has been integrating movement and performance art into her film work, drawing from a dance background cultivated during her years in Brazil. She is also the founder of Cinema-Luz, a collective dedicated to amplifying independent analog programming and screenings in the Midwestern hub.

Kristen Bernier is a Chicago-based choreographer, movement educator, sculptor, and producer grown in Sarasota "Place of the Dance", Florida. Her multidisciplinary live performances are beguiling moving-body-image panoramics. Kristen dedicates her curiosities to paradoxes of intimacy and solitude, eros and austerity, remembering and forgetting, self and other. Above all, she wishes to impart and evoke beautiful action.
