About:
Composer, guitarist, and vocalist, Trevor Dean Stewart is an up-and-coming voice in the Chicago music scene. With respect for the jazz traditions of the past and an openness for the future of music, his songs create a dialogue between nostalgia and innovation. With his new band featuring three horns and original music, he strives to incorporate both jazz and contemporary music in the same performance. Inspired by Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind, and Fire, Trevor brings energy and joy to the stage while allowing for improvisation within his compositions.
As a young musician, he started out as a classical guitarist and vocalist in Dallas, Texas. This young classical training helped him move to Chicago to pursue music at Columbia College Chicago. Under the guidance of Scott Hall, Trevor took a comprehensive approach to jazz that incorporated playing and studying the jazz arranging greats such as Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer. These artists, while all different, inform Trevor’s arrangements with a sense of authenticity and appreciation for the past. He is currently studying composition with Thomas Matta and jazz guitar with Scott Hesse at DePaul University for their MM in Jazz Studies.
Trevor’s compositions and arrangements have been played at the prestigious Auditorium Theater (2022), as well as at the Arie Crown Theater, and the legendary Jazz Showcase arranging for Tia Fuller and composing for the Bob Lark Septet (2023). In addition to arranging and composing, he also performs weekly at the historic Blackstone Hotel and the Aloft Hotel as a guitarist and vocalist. Trevor Dean Stewart creates a show for all audiences to enjoy.
Nicole Nicolalde is an Ecuadorian-American singer-songwriter from Chicago, IL. From a very young age Nicole had aspirations to be a performer, being influenced by Selena, Celia Cruz, and Ariana Grande. Aside from that, Nicole grew up listening to genres like andean, pop, and latin music playing around the house. Having attended a performing arts school, she was able to solidify her technique and connectivity to music.
As of now, Nicole is currently working on a project in hopes of introducing genres like salsa, merengue, and cumbia to the newer generation.
Josh Trimble was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He currently resides in Chicago where he is recording and co-producing his debut project, “Love & Adolescence” alongside his dear friend and fellow creative, Liam Hartnett.
Through the diversity of his influences in Neo-Soul, Funk, Folk, and Jazz, he seeks to capture the soul of life’s moments in the form of song.

About:
"Roots and Chords Music" brings to Chicago a famous composer and pianist Anton Batagov with "Selected letters of SR" program.
Anton Batagov (born October 10, 1965) is a Russian pianist and post-minimalist composer.
Heralded as "one of the most significant and unusual figures of Russian contemporary music" (Newsweek, Russian edition, 1997) and "the greatest pianist of our time" (Crescendo magazine, Germany, 2017) Anton Batagov is one of the most influential Russian composers and performers of our time.
A graduate of the Gnessin School and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and prize-winner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (1986) and other competitions, Batagov introduced the music by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass to Russian audiences. His debut album, a 160-minute recording of Olivier Messiaen's Vingt regards sur l'Enfant Jesus (Melodiya, 1990), became a major sensation. Three years later a renowned American critic Richard Kostelanetz characterized Batagov's 1993 recording of Bach’s The Art of the Fugue as "the most stunning interpretation of Bach since Glenn Gould."
His interpretations of classical and contemporary music distinguish themselves with expert knowledge of traditions and the history of culture. At the same time, they radically change habitual concepts of these works, and even of the very foundations of musical art.
From 1989 to 1996 Batagov was the artistic director of the legendary festival of contemporary music Alternativa. The influence of Batagov's work on the understanding of classical and new music and on the artistic tendencies in Russia has been tremendous.
In 1997 Batagov stopped performing live for 12 years to focus on composition and studio recordings.
As a composer, Batagov has his own unique voice. The post-minimalist language of his compositions is rooted in the harmonic and rhythmic patterns of Russian church bells and folk songs seamlessly mixed with the spirit of Buddhist philosophy, the dynamic pulse of early Soviet avant-garde, and the unfading energy of progressive rock. The philosophy of Batagov's projects eliminates any boundaries between "performance" and "composition" by viewing all existing musical practices—from ancient rituals to rock and pop culture and advanced computer technologies—as elements of his work. His discography includes over 50 albums. Batagov is the author of several movie soundtracks, and original music for major Russian TV channels. His compositions have been performed by outstanding Russian classical and rock musicians and orchestras.
In 2009 he returned to live performances. Since then, he has been performing a series of unique solo piano programs. His repertoire includes works by Bach, Pachelbel, Purcell and early English music, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, as well as many other composers, and his own numerous piano compositions. He has performed at The Grand Hall of Moscow Conservatory and The Grand Hall of St.Petersburg Philharmonie, Moscow International House of Music and Zaryadye Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music (New York), Jordan Hall (Boston), and Bing Concert Hall (Palo Alto, CA), Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), The Berliner Philharmonie and Philharmonie de Paris, Musiikkitalo (Helsinki) and Reduta Hall (Bratislava), Teatro Regio (Parma, Italy) and Palau de la Musica Catalana (Barcelona, Spain), and many other venues. The list of festivals he has participated in includes Diaghilev Festival (Perm, Russia), Ruhrtriennale (Essen, Germany), Next Wave and Bang on a Can (New York), Glass at 80 (University of North Carolina), Aarhus 2017 Festival (Aarhus, Denmark), and others.
Batagov is one of the closest collaborators of Philip Glass, one of the key performers of his music. He has been touring internationally with Glass for almost a decade. His Glass albums (The complete Etudes, Batagov's piano arrangements of scenes from Einstein on the Beach and Koyaanisqatsi, music from The Hours and Distant figure, a composition written by Philip Glass for and premiered by Anton Batagov) have received critical recognition, thousands of sales and millions of streams.
The Greatest Pianist of Our Time . His performance transcends the material world. (Crescendo magazine, Germany)
Batagov paints whole worlds on the piano. (Time Out New York) Batagov shakes up our notion of what a solo piano recital can sound like. (The Gathering Note, Seattle)
Batagov somehow managed to bring the atmosphere of confidence back to the classical concert hall. It had been lost long time ago. It's a tremendous victory no one has expected. It's a unique chance for classical music. (Novaya Gazeta, Russia)
The most significant musical event of the year; a landmark work that changed the coordinate system of the classical music scene. (Vedomosti, Russia).
SELECTED LETTERS OF SERGEI RACHMANINOFF by Anton Batagov - presented by Roots and Chords Music
Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes, no intermission
Renowned classical composer and pianist Anton Batagov performs his iconic piano cycle / album Selected Letters of Sergei Rachmaninoff. It was written, premiered and released in 2013. It caused a sensation. Numerous musicological articles and even dissertations have been written about it. It has deeply influenced many artists. Now it is considered to be a contemporary Russian classics. This performance is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's birth and the 80th anniversary of his death.

Composer's note
In October 2012 I visited Rachmaninoff's grave. He is buried at Kensico Cemetery in the hamlet of Valhalla, half an hour’s ride from New York City. A great musician who heard the universe as a powerful, boundless space resounding with the sounds of bells at once both tragic and triumphant, Rachmaninoff left Russia and became a part of a completely different world… As I stood at his grave, I found this space resonating within me. When I returned home, I began writing a piano cycle.
In this cycle, Rachmaninoff writes letters to postmodern composers. Rachmaninoff himself was an anti-modernist. He was not a revolutionary, was never "ahead of his time," and was unafraid of looking old-fashioned. At first glance, it would seem that he bore no influence on late 20th/early 21st century composers. Nonetheless, his invisible, magical presence can in fact be heard in the music of some composers, including so-called "contemporary classical" composers and rock musicians. Likewise, when I hear Rachmaninoff's endless melodies that evolve from a very short motive of literally two or three notes, the word "minimalism" all but rolls off my tongue…
Rachmaninoff thus speaks to the composers that would come after him. Among composers of his time, he did not find a receptive audience – unsurprising, perhaps, given the avant-garde experiments consuming the musical world at the time. The generation that followed Rachmaninoff essentially continued along the avant-garde path. However, Rachmaninoff looked even further ahead, taking sight of those with whom he desired to speak heart-to-heart.
We have long been accustomed to the fact that both early music and classical music are used as the building materials for new compositions. Time runs quickly, and we are already at the next turn of the spiral. Music written only a short while ago becomes itself material for today’s meditation. In this process, there are no quotations; there are only stylistic journeys in a time machine. The turns of this spiral resonate with one another, and we listen to the sounds they make.
Anton Batagov

VOICE BOX: STORYTELLING…WITH A MUSICAL TWIST!
Join us on Sunday, January 28th at 3:00pm for a storytelling event that will take you on an untamed journey, exploring tales of both the sacred and the profane! Voice Box features the wildly entertaining Mistress of Ceremonies, Maureen Muldoon, who curates a raucous afternoon of storytelling with a musical twist. “Saints and Sinners” is the theme and Cathy Richardson, lead singer of Jefferson Starship launches the program with a song, which inspires a story that in turn, inspires a spontaneous music response by Richardson. Described as a “story, a slam, a song, a serenade, a surrender,” Voice Box in Epiphany’s intimate Sanctuary performance space is a place to be heard and hear about the human condition.
About Maureen Muldoon
Maureen is an international speaker, writer, storyteller, and songbird who believes in the miraculous power of storytelling. She helps people tell their truth to expand their reach, leave their mark, and honor their lives. Her career began working in TV & film as an actress, writer, and producer, co-starred and guest-starred on shows like Dexter, CSI, and ER. She has been murdered by Brian Dennehy, seduced by Pierce Bronson, and turned into a monkey, a junkie, a jewel thief, and a thousand jilted lovers. But that’s just show biz. Maureen is an award-winning writer who has authored four books. Currently, she hosts writing retreats and spiritual adventures, taking creatives and spiritual seekers to sacred locations domestically, internationally, and, of course, internally.
About Cathy Richardson
It’s hard to think of any musician who’s had a more varied career than Chicago-based singer Cathy Richardson; from scrappy indie rock singer selling albums out of her car to commercial jingles, off-Broadway stage productions to fronting Jefferson Starship and a variety of side projects, she also picked up a Grammy nomination along the way. The twists and turns of her career feel impossible to follow, and incredibly unlikely, but are owed to the vast range of Richardson’s dynamite-packed vocal cords and her dogged perseverance to achieve goals she set as a teenager.

Free Blues Friday Presents: Denise La Grassa Band

About:
DENISE LA GRASSA stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of perseverance and creativity. As a singer-songwriter, she's carved a niche in Chicago’s vibrant music scene with her rootsy style, a harmonious blend of rock, blues, soul, and gospel. Her sophisticated yet irresistibly melodic songwriting is again prominently displayed on her latest album, "The Flame," which is gaining radio airplay in the United States as well as Canada and Europe.
North of 40: The Turning Point
The winds of change blew through Denise's life in May of 2022 when Lincoln College, where she led the reimagining of the music program, closed its doors permanently. But instead of returning to academia, she fearlessly resolved at this late stage to dedicate her life full-time to songwriting and performance. This was the beginning of what she dubbed her "North of 40" journey, asking the world “Can a woman … say ‘North of 40,’ follow her dream of returning to Europe to play with her new band and new bluesy sound?”
Early Daredevil Days
Denise's fearlessness and creative expression revealed itself early. It was elementary school in suburban Chicago where she would write poems, put them to music, then knock on neighborhood doors to perform and ultimately try to sell her latest creations to her neighbors. That fearlessness carried itself through her teen years, where she responded to a competition notice and broke the world record for muscle grinds on a trapeze—an achievement that found its place in the hallowed pages of the Guinness Book of World Records.
This early courage and tenacity foreshadowed her future in performance. As a 20-something she would write and perform her own one-woman musical shows, one of which found an audience in Europe. She also landed a role in a made-for-HBO movie with Anthony Edwards, and stints on the popular TV series Unsolved Mysteries.
The Music that Speaks to the Soul and the Spirit
Denise's music is more than just melodies and lyrics; it's a bridge that often connects her faith with themes of justice, compassion, and human dignity. The rootsy sound that forms the background for these poems reflect her diverse musical influences - blues legends, rock icons, soulful crooners, jazz luminaries, and the deep resonance of gospel.

About:
Flutist Steve Yépez has been performing for thirty years and comes to the stage with a long history of performing around the country and especially along the West Coast and throughout the Chicago area. Mr. Yépez has been the Principal Flute for the Chicago Summer Opera since 2009, as well as both the Principal Flute for The Chicago Arts Orchestra, and The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. In addition to performing with those stellar ensembles Steve is a member of the faculty at The New Music School and frequently performs in chamber music groups with colleagues there. In Los Angeles he has performed with a number of notable groups, including The West Los Angeles Symphony, Burbank Philharmonic, and The Antelope Valley Symphony. And for three summers Mr. Yépez played at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as the Principal Flute and Assistant Principal Flute with the Idyllwild Festival Orchestra. In 2009, Steve Yépez founded the Chicago-based chamber ensemble, Primavera Players, now The Yépez Players, which performs regularly and has added a new focus recently: outreach concerts and chamber music to young people – in a bid to both introduce and excite them into the world of classical music. The Yépez Players has performed widely around Chicago and has been a part of the Skyline Salon Series. The Yépez Players’ newest venture, Collaborate in Harmony has added an exciting twist to performance: working with the corporate world to teach the classical musicians’ approach to communication and productivity but in the business/technology workplace. Mr. Yépez has earned his Master of Music Degree at DePaul University after graduating from California State University, Northridge. He has studied with renowned flutist, Mary Stolper (Grant Park Symphony); Sandra Iles (California State University); and Catherine Ransom (Los Angeles Philharmonic). In addition, he has performed and participated in Masterclasses with William Bennet, Walfrid Kujala, Jeanne Baxtresser, Anne Zentner, Jonathan Keeble, Eldred Spell, and Eugenia Zucker.

Earning degrees in Piano Performance from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and the DePaul University School of Music, Panko was awarded top prizes in the Society of American Musicians’ Piano Competition (Chicago) and the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition (New York). Following a concert tour of Poland where he was honored by the United States with the title of Cultural Ambassador, Panko was invited by the City of Chicago to present a Chopin recital for the visiting Lech Walesa and other Polish dignitaries. Panko has also been featured in performances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, Lincoln Center Library, WQXR Radio (New York), is a frequent performer on WFMT Radio (Chicago), and appeared in Symphony Center playing the music of Steven Sondheim for Mr. Sondheim. An Artist Faculty member of the New Music School piano faculty in Chicago, Panko also serves as Minister of Music and as Artistic Director of the Music at Bethel Concert Series for Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst, Illinois and is a founding member of the Indigo Ensemble.

About:
The Last Word Quintet is a collaboration between four of Chicago's best musicians and songwriters with Marc Kelly Smith, performance poet, founder of the Uptown Poetry Slam and a leader of the worldwide poetry slam movement. Marc's performance of original and classic poetry meshes seamlessly with Al Day's vocals and lyrics to illustrate multi-dimensional tales of urban life.
Al Day has been hailed "Most Promising Songwriter" by Chicago Magazine and has appeared in clubs and colleges throughout the United States and on radio and TV shows as WFMT's "Midnight Special" and WTTW's "Sound Stage." Beyond collaborating as a musician and writer with Last Word members, Al has written librettos for several of Doug Lofstrom’s musical theater works, including the opera Two Soldiers.
Bob Long has performed as a composer and jazz pianist nationally and internationally at the Chicago Jazz Festival twice, JVC Jazz Festival in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. He and saxophonist Brian Gephart have recorded six CDs with the GephartLong Quartet for the Birch Tree label. Al and Bob have been musical collaborators for many years and Bob has been a musical part of Marc’s poetry slam on and off for decades.
Marc Kelly Smith is creator and founder of the Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill Club in Chicago. Chalking more than 2000 performances in clubs, concert halls, and festivals in the United States and Europe, Marc continues to host and perform every Sunday night at the Green Mill, while always looking for new projects – such as the Last Word – to broaden the space for contemporary verse.
Bassist Doug Lofstrom has been composing prolifically since the 1970’s and his works have been performed by the St. Louis, Atlanta and Oregon Symphony Orchestras. In 2001, he formed The New Quartet, a versatile chamber ensemble which performs his original music and arrangements of modern classics, jazz and world music. He has taught music at Columbia College in both a full-time and part-time capacity since 1986. Over the years, he has collaborated with Al Day on numerous songs and musical theater projects.
Saxophonist Brian Gephart leads his own jazz sextet, the Brian Gephart Group. He has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Chicago Jazz Festival, the Taste of Chicago, and most of the Chicago jazz clubs. Besides teaching private lessons, Brian also coaches the jazz combos at Evanston Township High School. The Last Word has adapted several of the many songs that Brian has written.
The Last Word has released two CD’s with a third on the way. Visit their website at www.lastwordquintet.com

About:
Laurel Premo is known for her rhythmically deep and rapt delivery of roots music, voiced on finger-style electric guitar, lap steel, fiddle, and voice. The glowing heartiness and rich grit of her sound reveal a love of and complete submersion in heavy archaic roots—from the crossover of old-time and blues American traditions to darker Nordic sounds. She is a Michigan-based artist who has been writing, arranging, and touring since 2009 with vocal and instrumental roots acts, and is internationally known from her duo Red Tail Ring. Her 2021 solo release, ‘Golden Loam’, continues Laurel’s weaving of old wild and soundscape, with ruminant power, a masterful use of space, and dynamic waves of warm, gritty sustain. “Subtle but dazzling and rich in texture. Watching a live performance is pure hypnosis.” – MTV
Jake Shulman-Ment is at the helm of a new generation of Klezmer performers. He tours, records, and teaches internationally and has spent two decades traveling and living in Eastern Europe, learning violin traditions and researching old Jewish music from master fiddlers. Drawing from his upbringing in a community of people dedicated to practicing secular Yiddish culture in New York City as well as from his extensive travel, research and study, he has synthesized an expressive and individual style that is deeply rooted in the diasporic history of Yiddish culture. Jake speaks to audiences intimately through his singular voice on the violin, sings Yiddish folk songs of philosophy, love, and resistance, and shares stories and musings about life, music, wandering, and being human.
https://www.jakeshulmanment.com/
Laurel and Jake share a certain ruminant, compositional style in their work, each drawing from deep roots in the folk music and stories of their ancestors. In this extraordinary concert, their two separate sets as soloists will culminate in a collaborative performance that explores new sounds and connections in a shared American story of migration, search for identity and community, and innovation.

LOUD BODIES is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization working to support the Chicago dance community by providing a safe, movement space for artists through mentorship and performance opportunities and the creation of new dance works. Our goal is to foster a welcoming, explorative, unapologetic community for dance artists to invest in themselves, their own creative practice, and their individual, unique growth. We believe that dance is a legitimate and powerful tool for protest, fueling conversation, self expression and collaboration. We emphasize this belief by partnering with local, non-profit + mutual aid organizations, pushing the conversation through loud dances filled with discourse, and leading with the intent of giving these organizations a platform to share what they do, and how we can further help. Our forever ambition is to use what we do best to make ourselves and the others around us feel good, to do our part, and to break the mold of expectations in our own artistic communities.
