About:
The Great Filipino Songbook beckons you into the Golden Age of Filipino song, where tender kundimans and stirring compositions shaped a people’s identity. Reimagined by Lou Ella Rose and SamaSama Project for today’s listeners, these rediscovered gems by visionary Filipino composers also tell an almost-forgotten shared history between the Philippines and America, reflecting the Asian American journey of migration, resilience, and cultural exchange. Featuring guest artists Patricia Mosley, Tirzah Joy, Sonia Oyola, Melissa Flavia and R. Darryl Thomas with Howie Pfifer on the piano, this performance brings vibrant arrangements and rarely heard stories that resonate with all of us today.
SamaSama Project is composed of Lou Ella Rose (lead vocals), Baron Cabalona (keyboards), Ran Sevilla (rhythm guitar), John Kniker (lead guitars), EJ Luna (bass guitar), and Migs Dimaculangan (drums)

About:
Fish and The Cats
Welcome to Fish and the Cats!
Jazz that swings, grooves, bops and rocks.
Come enjoy some great jazz in Chicago with Fish & the Cats! We love playing music from the Great American Song Book and other favorites that have stood the test of time.
You'll hear classics like "Honeysuckle Rose" and "What a Wonderful World," along with songs like "Cantaloupe Island" and "Moondance" – music that spans several generations.
Our group includes talented musicians and a vocalist who really brings the songs to life. You can catch us performing around Chicago, especially in Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town.
We've been fortunate to connect with audiences who appreciate jazz and keep inviting us back. If you enjoy live music and want to hear some well-played standards, we'd love to have you join us.
Why people like our performances: We focus on playing music we genuinely care about, and that enthusiasm tends to be contagious.

About:
Ellie Rui 瑞 is a Chicago-based Jazz drummer from Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Chicago shortly after graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the Spring of 2024. At Oberlin, Rui 瑞 studied with NEA Jazz Master Billy Hart for all 4 years.
Ellie Rui 瑞 is releasing her debut album, DayDreams Are Encouraged, the spring on May 19th. Rui 瑞 began writing DayDreams Are Encouraged in the summer of 2022 and recorded it here in Chicago in June 2025. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Klara Carrera, with cover art by Francesca Neibel-Spruill. In addition to Rui 瑞, it features musicians Chemutai Ruto, Takeru Satoh, J Renee, Anokyewaa Oppong, Rahsaan Nance, Aidan Marco, Francesca Neibel-Spruill, and Will Feeney. The album attempts to convey Rui 瑞’s experiences growing up with ADHD and OCD in a neurotypical world. It is a celebration of different ways of thinking. Rui 瑞’s compositions are typically characterized by a percussive approach, even when she is writing for other instruments. She generally follows a “jazz form” but her chord changes and rhythms are intentionally non-standard. For example, on the album’s first track, “DayDreamer,” Rui 瑞 utilizes different time signatures and feels to illustrate the multidirectional pull of ADHD—the constant diversion but also the thrill of new ideas. In the 6th track, “For This Moment”, Rui 瑞 conveys her experience with OCD, especially the push and pull of her mind and the struggle to stay present in the moment. The piece begins with a melodic motif that, as each instrument enters, gets offset by a half note. This creates a layered “sound collage” meant to approximate the disruptions caused by intrusive thought patterns. The album utilizes many different musical, lyrical, and compositional techniques, all in the service of conveying the feelings of a young person who doesn’t think in a standard way but who nonetheless manages to turn out OK.
Notable recent performances and projects by Rui 瑞 include recording with Pulitzer Prize winner Susie Ibarra, as a member of Ibarra’s CHAN Percussion Ensemble; playing with Colin Heshmat and Emma Dayhuff at Merriman’s Playhouse in South Bend, IN; playing with her own group “The Ellie Rui 瑞 Ensemble” at venues such as The Epiphany Center For the Arts, The Whistler, Clara, and Prairie Moon; playing with Chicago-based artist Elysia Marie as a member of her band; playing music at Holy Ground Sessions at Healthy Hood Chicago; playing with the Karli Bunn Ensemble in Birch Creek, WI; and doing a feature set with “The Ellie Rui 瑞 Ensemble” for Millie Ahearn’s Jam Session at Clara. In her performances, she often shares parts of her life story in the hope of bringing people together. Rui 瑞 likes to be around musicians and other people that remind her of the kind of human being she wants to be.

About:
Kurt Loeffler is a Chicago-based drummer, percussionist, bandleader, and music lecturer known for
his dynamic performances and engaging, audience-centered approach. As an active performer, he
leads a range of ensembles—from intimate trios to larger groups—throughout Chicago, while also
presenting music appreciation programs that blend live performance, storytelling, and historical
context.
In addition to lectures, Kurt offers live musical performances that often highlight the same styles
and artists featured in his talks. His ensembles—comprised of some of the top professional
musicians from the Chicago area—perform jazz, standards, Latin, pop, and rock selections from the
Great American Songbook and beyond.
Kurt holds a Master’s Degree in Jazz Drum Set from the University of Illinois, a Master’s Certificate
in Arranging from Berklee College of Music, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Orchestral Percussion from
the University of Michigan. He has also pursued advanced jazz studies at DePaul University and
studied piano, harmony, and theory with renowned educator Alan Swain.
In 1988, Steve Million was a semifinalist in the internationally renowned Thelonious
Monk Piano Competition; that same year, the Missouri native moved to Chicago and
never looked back. The music of Monk continued to play an important role in his
career. In the 90s he formed a two-keyboard band called Monk’s Dream with Mike
Kocour and Robert Shy; in the 2000s created the humor-filled band Thelonious Moog
with Joe "Guido" Welsh; and is now part of a piano duo with esteemed pianist Jeremy
Kahn called Double Monk that performs the music of Monk with their arrangements and
sometimes with the modern dancer Ariane Dolan.
Around 2004 Million began a rewarding career teaching privately at the respected Merit
School of Music, where he is now Jazz Chair, runs classes in jazz piano, jazz ensembles,
and improvisation. In addition to playing his regular nightly gig at the popular downtown
restaurant Catch 35. Million has recorded three CDs for Palmetto Records: Million to
One (1995), Thanks A Million (1997), and Truth Is (1999) featuring such artists as
trumpet great Randy Brecker, saxists Chris Potter and Dick Oatts, and legendary bassist
Michael Moore. He has also released a trio album, Poetic Necessities (BluJazz, 2002), and
a solo album, Remembering The Way Home (Origin, 2008).
Emma Taylor is a multifaceted musician, educator, and arts professional based in Chicago. Emma
is a graduate of Millikin University (BM Music Business and Commercial Music) and the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (MM, DMA). During her time at UIUC, Emma studied under the
direction of Larry Gray and served as the Jazz Bass teaching assistant, teaching private lessons and
running Jazz Band III, as well as the Classical Bass TA. For three years, Emma taught at Millikin
University’s School of Music and School of Theatre and Dance. She has also taught at Purdue
University and Richland Community College.
Emma is an acclaimed bassist and bandleader, having received several awards such as the 2017
DownBeat Outstanding Performance and the 2020 Jazz Achievement Award. She is a sidewoman in
the Central Illinois jazz scene and has played with notable musicians such as Carl Allen, Derrick
Gardner, Jim Pugh, Troy Roberts, Frank Catalano, Joel Spencer, Tito Carrillo, Larry Gray, and Jim
Snidero.
Aside from playing in the US, Emma has also toured and taught masterclasses in Argentina, Chile,
and Cuba, as well as in Mexico with Wave Trio, a modern jazz group, which features two-time
Grammy winning artist Adrian Terrazas-Gonzalez (The Mars Volta, T.R.A.M., Transient) on
woodwinds. Most recently, Emma traveled to Brazil with Millikin University students for a weeklong residency at University de Federal in Uberlandia.
Emma has also been recognized for her talents in dancing, singing, and musical theatre. She toured
Central Illinois as a singer/dancer and performed in numerous productions at Central Illinois Equity
Theatre “The Little Theatre On The Square”. In her free time, Emma enjoys choreographing and
teaching dance classes—attributing her musical feel to her years of dance and performing.
