About KAIA:
From the tango of the Rio de la Plata to the string quartets of Silvestre Revueltas, the KAIA String Quartet is an ensemble devoted to promoting the rich and colorful music of Latin America. Active performers in both the US and abroad, highlights of the most recent season include a collaboration with Jazz singer Paul Marinaro and performances at Chicago area venues including the Studebaker Theatre, the Epiphany Center for the Arts, the Morton Arboretum, the Mozart Immersive Experience, and the Kenilworth Assembly Hall. The quartet's most recent tour of Uruguay and Argentina included a performance at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
The Quartet plays an active role in Chicago's music scene and has performed at the Chicago Latino Music Festival, the Ear Taxi Festival, and Chamber Music on the Fox. In 2017, KAIA was the first ensemble in residence at Chicago's classical radio station, WFMT. During this residency they explored the world of Latin classical music with audiences through daily radio segments, performances and broadcasts around the city and the production of KAIA Kids, a series of children's education videos.
Celebrated by Downbeat magazine for its ability to "beautifully blur the lines between jazz, classical, Latin and world music" KAIA’s album collaboration with Fareed Haque was chosen by Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich as one of the top ten classical recordings of 2018. Their album, Sureño, explores the music and relationship of Argentinian composers Astor Piazzolla and José Bragato. The latest recording project released in 2020 includes a collaboration with jazz pianist Ryan Cohan in his work Originations. KAIA together with Cohan and his chamber ensemble were featured performing this piece at 2019 Chicago's Jazz Fest main stage.
KAIA is deeply devoted to music education. They are teaching artists for Ravinia's Reach*Teach*Play program and for Classical Music Chicago's Young Peoples' Concerts program. KAIA founded DePaul University's Community Music Division chamber program where they inspire the next generation of performers. During the 2023-24 season, the KAIA String Quartet was invited to teach and perform at Michigan State University and Carthage College as artists-in-residence. In the summer of 2023, KAIA was on the New England Music Camp's Chamber Music Intensive faculty as the resident quartet and will be returning in the summer of 2024. Since 2018, KAIA has been the ensemble-in-residence for the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra's Summer Chamber Music Camp. The quartet traveled to Tijuana, Mexico to present and perform in schools through the sponsorship of the Mainly Mozart Festival annually between 2013 and 2017.

BREAKING BOUNDARIES both musical and geographical, cellist, composer, and multilingual vocalist IAN MAKSIN has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres and traditional music from around the globe in a new way using his cello as the main unifying force.
ONE-MAN ORCHESTRA: He uses the loop pedal and other electronic devices to augment the sound of the cello and turn it into a virtual orchestra.
SINGING IN 34 LANGUAGES: What began as a hobby and a passion for linguistics and travel has become part of a unique concert experience. Ian Maksin sings in Ukrainian, Polish, English, Farsi, Armenian, French, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Mongolian, Bambara (one of the tongues spoken in West Africa), and many other exotic languages. Most of this repertoire was amassed by Maksin during his world travels, jam sessions, and collaborations with local musicians. Many of his original songs and instrumental compositions are infused with flavors of ethnic music from countries and regions where he drew inspiration: Mongolia, West Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Andalusian flamenco.
THE GLOBAL MUSICIAN: Born in the former USSR into a multinational family, Ian grew up absorbing many cultures and traditions from an early age. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad, then came to the USA at 16 to continue his studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. After working for many years in the classical genre, including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami, Ian decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience, including playing rock and blues guitar and his passion for jazz and world music, has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. In Ian's own words: "At some point, I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Instead, it is one of the most powerful forces in the world, capable of healing, inspiring, bringing people together, and bringing peace among them. I believe that the cello will save the world.”

An artist who is equally informed by his classical training, love of Jazz, and childhood playing rock music (primarily with his father John Carpender), Henry's playing and writing is a charming blend of punchy, sensitive, quirky, and dripping with love for life and self expression. Henry's dedication began at age 13 when he played his first gig with the much beloved local band Expo '76. Since then, through both his education and the beginning of his professional freelance career, Henry has shared the stage with Dag Juhlin, Billy Harper, Robbie Fulks, Tanya Darby, Cathy Richardson, NRBQ and the Canadian Brass. Henry has also enjoyed a healthy start to a career as a private instructor and group music educator, running a small studio of dedicated middle and high schoolers across the Chicagoland area. When he's not playing or teaching, he can be found playing video games, cooking a new dish, or relaxing on Montrose beach.

Free Blues Friday featuring Smiley Tillmon Band with Kate Moss
Date: Friday, September 20th

About Smiley Tillmon Band:
One of the busiest blues outfits in Chicagoland, the Smiley Tillmon Band is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. There’s an obvious reason why the veteran guitarist’s booking schedule is so jam-packed: Smiley knows how to have a good time and makes sure his audience does too. After 55 years on the local blues scene, Tillmon serves up the blues and soul standards that people never seem to stop craving, his rich vocals and fluid guitar backed by a band that keeps his grooves tight and right.
Born Moses Tillmon in rural Jefferson County, Georgia, Smiley grew up on a hearty musical diet of gospel, country, and a little blues. His mother moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was ten; there he was exposed to calypso music, adding up to a singular list of influences. Tillmon took up guitar and was good enough by the dawn of the ‘60s to back Miami R&B singer Billy Miranda in the studio. He joined Sammy Ambrose & the Afro-Beats, a calypso-oriented band, touring from Canada to New York. Smiley bid the Afro-Beats adieu in 1962 and moved to Chicago. There he established himself on the blues circuit, playing with Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Denise LaSalle, and other South Side luminaries until he opted for a day job in 1977.
Upon his 2007 retirement, Smiley reverted to full-time musical status. He joined forces with bassist Tom Rezetko, and they’ve been inseparable onstage ever since. Kate Moss shares guitar duties with Tillmon; married to another blues guitar standout, Nick Moss, Kate’s sound is heavily influenced by Freddie King and Magic Sam (she fell in love with the blues at age 21 when she met Buddy Guy, and she’s shared stages with Buddy, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Shaw, and Lurrie Bell, to name just a few). Drummer George Baumann completes one of the Windy City’s toughest blues combos, one that’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear. - Bill Dahl

About Zach Pietrini:
Milwaukee based Americana steeped The Zach Pietrin Band has become a hartland rock staple over the last few years. With a sound heavily influenced by the likes of David Ramirez, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, these guys know how to put on a show (Best Live Act In Milwaukee- Mil Mag). Their last release, Rock & Roll is Dead was lauded by the likes of Milwaukee Record, Music Mecca Nashville, 88nine, Milwaukee Mag, Americana Highways and many other regional publications. It broke into the top 100 on the college and indie charts in 22. The band can boast playing SXSW showcases or featured Summerfest spots or national songwriting contest winning or opening for several national touring acts but it's Pietrini's genuine and honest approach to songwriting and the band's contagious energy that make their live performance one to watch.
About Jodee Lewis:
A native of the Missouri Ozarks, Jodee was raised on folk songs and honky-tonk, and her music reflects the best of both worlds. The Chicago Tribune says she is “a singer-songwriter whose outsized talent is as big as her voice,” and calls her first album, Whiskey Halo, an “impressive solo debut”.
Of follow-up album, Buzzard’s Bluff, No Depression says "Buzzard's Bluff is a survivor's guide to healing, through and through, and it deserves a spin or a hundred." And PASTE magazine calls the album “a cathartic release from deep within the Missouri Ozarks. The natural lush landscapes are home to beautiful views, but just like the numerous birds of prey, a dark secret is always circling."
Jodee is often joined by Katie Abernethy on fiddle and vocals, and Doug Zylstra on guitar and vocals. A classically trained violin player, Katie is a member of the Elmhurst Symphony, teaches violin lessons and is the mother of three small children. An extremely accomplished musician, Doug also works full-time as a structural engineer. Additionally, they are two of the nicest people in the world.

Anna Soltys and the Familiar is a modern folk rock band with an entrancing new sound. Anna spent the first part of her childhood in Poland followed by six years in Paris before moving to her self-proclaimed home, Chicago. It is this cross-cultural awareness that may awaken the type of delivery that is so new to her sound. In addition to the music, her lyrical, poetic content fills the heart with an awareness of the self we could all use a little of. The Familiar features Anna Soltys on vox and guitar, Larry Beer on drums/percussion, John Pirccucello on guitar/pedal/mandolin, Mark Piane on bass and David Smith on horns. Anna’s music explores and embodies elements of pain, strength, honesty, and sorrow. From start to finish, its lyrically-driven, simple melodies leave you with a sense of colorful melancholy with a twist of renewed hope for lighter days. Art was truly the only language she had. In addition to her music, Anna has spent over a decade creating public art in Chicago, working with communities, organizations, and individuals to install long-lasting messages of hope, love, and individuality. Whether in a home, on the side of a public building, or the facade of a business, these pieces function as landmarks.

About:
Let’s Swing to Electro-Beats!
How do you combine the charming texts and catchy swing melodies from the golden twenties with contemporary electro-beats? German musician Friedrich Rau and his band present new and creative songs in the style of the so-called Electro-Swing! Inspired by the light-heartedness of the Jazz Age, yet rooted in today’s technology-oriented society, he, together with guitarist and singer Tim Ludwig and drummer Sebastian Stahl, created an entirely new and fresh sound! The result consists of witty and thought-provoking songs performed to catchy tunes that are perfect for a club performance, whether you want to dance to them or just listen or sing along! Although the songs will be in German, texts and translations will be provided!
Friedrich Rau is a German singer, songwriter, composer, and musical performer, and currently lives in Leipzig. He studied music at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar and performed in many musicals like DER MEDICUS (The Physician), THE FAMOUS DOOR ON SWING STREET, ROBIN HOOD, THE WHO'S TOMMY and THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW. He also composed a musical called SCHNEEWEISSCHEN UND ROSENTORT and has been touring regionally and internationally with his own songs.
Tim Ludwig enriches the project as co-songwriter, producer and co-developer. He is the guitarist and the second singer along with Friedrich Rau. He also teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig, where he offers classes on music education and guitar performance.
Sebastian Stahl is the third member of the group. He studied jazz drums at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar. He has always experimented with electronic and acoustic drum sounds and has participated in many musical and theatre productions such as in the Jazz Age inspired Krystallpalast Varieté Leipzig.

About:
We recollect memories like paintings on the hall of a childhood home. Certain colors and details stick out to us, while others lose their luster over time. Nevertheless, we appreciate what we do remember as it indelibly shaped our present and eventual future. As vocalist, songwriter, producer, and namesake of Mike Mains & The Branches, Mike Mains thinks aloud in his songs. He ponders events and experiences as well as their ensuing effects on his identity, telling intimate stories through artful pop rock. After generating millions of streams and consistently captivating audiences on tour, the band recognize, accept, and absorb these
formative mementos on their 2023 fourth full-length offering, Memory Unfixed [Tooth & Nail Records]. “There are two ways of looking at it,” Mike notes. “I can be resentful, bitter, and angry about a lot of what happened to me growing up, or I could be grateful that I have a life filled with memories. Some of them are broken, and some of them are amazing. I’m fucking here, man. I’m breathing, I’m existing, and I get to make art and share it. On top of that, I have an incredible wife who loves and supports me. If we allow ourselves to become friends with our own unfixed memories, there are lessons we can learn and carry on. I went through a painful period and came out on the other side of it as a better person with a beautiful portrait of that season in the form of the album.”
Mike Mains & The Branches have always bottled complex emotions and relatable stories within hummable homegrown anthems. They have organically progressed over the course of Home [2012], Calm Down, Everything Is Fine [2014], and When We Were In Love [2019]. Billboard hailed the “buoyant pop” of the latter, while Atwood Magazine praised its “upbeat, energetic, feelgood pop-rock.” Among many standouts, “Briggs” generated north of 5 million Spotify streams as “Breathing Underwater” and “Live Forever” each surpassed the 1 million-mark. After trading his native Michigan for Nashville, Mike underwent another era of
transformation. Stuck at home mid-Pandemic, he retreated inward and began to understand his past and, ultimately, himself a bit more.
“I’m just a husband, a wounded healer, and a grateful storyteller. If these songs make you feel less alone, I did my job.”

About:
ANDRÉ MEHMARI
Sunday, November 24 at 7 p.m.
Where: Epiphany Center for the Arts, 201 S. Ashland Ave.
Admission: $30 ($25 ILCC members)
To music lovers and critics in Brazil, André Mehmari is a musical wonder and a source of national pride. To the ear, imagine a meeting of Mozart and Keith Jarrett in Brazil: Mozart for the intensity of his creation, Jarrett for his relationship to improvisation at the modern piano. His standards, however, are the compositions that comprise what he calls “The Great Brazilian Songbook,” works written at the same time that the Great American Songbook was created, and equally rich in lyricism and sublimity.
All of the world’s songbooks and literature are his realm, a borderless inspiration expressed in his compositions and improvisations. The latter takes special form in his solo piano performances where he invites the audience to give him suggestions which, in the moment, he spins into an improvised suite. He invites you to come to the concert with the music you love and offer it for the creation of these one-time-only but forever memorable creations. Come hear one of the greatest musical minds of our time.

Henry Carpender is a trombonist, composer, and educator based in the city of Chicago.
This show will be an opportunity to premier new work, revisit some favorites, and share arrangements of some of Henry's favorite artists. The ensemble will include Aval Zaucha on the Piano, Mary Halm on the upright bass, and Tommy Sagins on the drums.

Free Blues Friday featuring Smiley Tillmon Band with Kate Moss
Date: Friday, September 20th

Showtime: 8PM

- Bill Dahl

About:
Nicole Nicolalde is an Ecuadorian-American singer-songwriter from Chicago, IL. From a very young age, Nicole had aspirations to be a performer, being influenced by female artists like Selena, Celia Cruz, and Ariana Grande. Aside from that, Nicole grew up listening to genres like andean, pop, and latin music playing around the house. Having attended a performing arts school, she was able to solidify her technique and connectivity to music.
Nicole has made a name for herself & her band, performing all around Chicago. Most recently, Nicole Nicolalde and her band won Columbia College Chicago’s Biggest Mouth - a live competition hosting Columbia College Chicago artists to compete for the chance to win a 6 hour studio session at Rax Trax Studios (located in Chicago, IL) and the opportunity to perform at the main stage of Columbia’s own Manifest event.
As of now, Nicole is currently working on her debut project in hopes of introducing genres like salsa, merengue, and cumbia to the newer generation.

About Deep Cricket Night:
Deep Cricket Night has come out of the pandemic with a sonic - style shift through the wormhole. We used the roots at the portal's gate as a ladder, climbing out of our past sound. The present sound regards fulfilling the new, post-pandemic range. For practical cliches, our sound is now akin to Joy Division meets 1970 Pink Floyd with Syd still in the room. The band is comprised of Lance Drake (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Greg MacAyeal(Bass), Dave Buoscio (Piano/Organ), Michael Ressler (drums).
Musically, DCN builds their original sound highlighted by the lead bass hooks of Greg MacAyeal and the vocal-lyrical strength of the band's primary songwriter, Lance Drake.
About Medical Miracle:

Freddie is the embodiment of the Chicago Blues. The 2nd son of the world-famous 7th Son, Willie Dixon, Freddie has been surrounded by the Blues since the day he was born. His father is a blues legend as a song writer, producer, and musician. Willie was at the helm at Chess Records for many of the sides cut in the 1950’s, 1960’s and into the 1970’s.
Freddie began his blues career learning his chops playing with a number of musicians in south side blues clubs. He was soon hired to play in his father’s band, The Chicago Blues All-Stars and traveled around the world spreading the gospel of the blues.
