About:
A 2027 Illinois Arts Council grantee, guitarist and composer Brian Citro has been playing and writing music for 30+ years. He studied with renowned guitarist Fareed Haque and is a longtime member of The Drastics. He’s performed and toured with JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub!, Akablay in Ghana, and others.
Described by All About Jazz as “a proficient composer and arranger ... with flexible and sophisticated harmonic progressions,” Brian has earned a reputation as a songwriter who balances lyricism, fresh harmonies, and unique song structures. His new album Keep Moving (Home), on Calligram Records, features his “lyrical yet modern guitar playing” (Fareed Haque) on 14 original compositions performed by his quartet with Nick Mazzarella, Quin Kirchner, and Matt Ulery. The music flows from Brian’s experiences as a musician and human rights lawyer living in India and traveling worldwide. Paris Move gave the album its highest rating, “Indispensable,” saying “there is something undeniably human in the music: a warmth, a sense of intimacy.” Take Effect rated the album 9 out of 10, and Textura observed that “Citro's music rarely sounds like anyone's but his own.”
Brian’s previous album, Acoustic Pastime on ears&eyes Records, features solo guitar arrangements of his compositions and Thelonious Monk tunes. Brian also leads an organ trio with Tom Vaitsas on organ and Peter Mack on drums, and he co-leads The Hey Lows with multi-instrumentalist and producer Lance Loiselle. Here, Brian’s organ trio performs Pat Metheny’s “Missouri Uncompromised” at Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago.
