About:

Thunder and Tranquility: A Gamelan Journey invites audiences into a distinctly Balinese worldview, which embraces contrast not as conflict, but as essential balance. In Balinese Hindu tradition, opposing forces such as good and evil are not mutually exclusive, but interdependent, coexisting in a dynamic equilibrium. Rather than striving to eliminate darkness, life is devoted to maintaining harmony between all elements.

This philosophy comes alive through music and movement in Friends of the Gamelan's (FROG's) newest program, shifting between intensity and serenity. Experience the electrifying presence of the masked dance Jauk Manis; the delicate, shimmering textures of the gamelan angklung; the premiere of Chill It On Down by Ross Lafleur; and more exciting performances. Through these works, FROG transports the audience to a world where thunder and tranquility are not opposites but partners in balance. Guests of all ages are encouraged.

Since 1980, FROG invites Chicago to experience the rich musical heritage of Indonesia. Two ensembles with individually distinct sets of gamelan instruments are each respectively dedicated to Javanese and Balinese gamelan music and dance, led by artistic directors Claire Fassnacht and Alex Yoffe. The organization provides quality instruction weekly, performs world-class concerts, and presents engaging hands-on workshops. Follow us on Instagram at @chicagogamelan.
