Free Blues Friday featuring Smiley Tillmon Band with Kate Moss
Date: Friday, September 20th

About Smiley Tillmon Band:
One of the busiest blues outfits in Chicagoland, the Smiley Tillmon Band is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. There’s an obvious reason why the veteran guitarist’s booking schedule is so jam-packed: Smiley knows how to have a good time and makes sure his audience does too. After 55 years on the local blues scene, Tillmon serves up the blues and soul standards that people never seem to stop craving, his rich vocals and fluid guitar backed by a band that keeps his grooves tight and right.
Born Moses Tillmon in rural Jefferson County, Georgia, Smiley grew up on a hearty musical diet of gospel, country, and a little blues. His mother moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was ten; there he was exposed to calypso music, adding up to a singular list of influences. Tillmon took up guitar and was good enough by the dawn of the ‘60s to back Miami R&B singer Billy Miranda in the studio. He joined Sammy Ambrose & the Afro-Beats, a calypso-oriented band, touring from Canada to New York. Smiley bid the Afro-Beats adieu in 1962 and moved to Chicago. There he established himself on the blues circuit, playing with Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Denise LaSalle, and other South Side luminaries until he opted for a day job in 1977.
Upon his 2007 retirement, Smiley reverted to full-time musical status. He joined forces with bassist Tom Rezetko, and they’ve been inseparable onstage ever since. Kate Moss shares guitar duties with Tillmon; married to another blues guitar standout, Nick Moss, Kate’s sound is heavily influenced by Freddie King and Magic Sam (she fell in love with the blues at age 21 when she met Buddy Guy, and she’s shared stages with Buddy, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Shaw, and Lurrie Bell, to name just a few). Drummer George Baumann completes one of the Windy City’s toughest blues combos, one that’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear. - Bill Dahl

About:
REFLECTIONS presents Italian composer Caterina Barbieri in a night of spellbinding sonic intensity at this historic former church. She’s joined by opener KMRU on a consciousness-altering ambient set, with immersive visuals by Berlin-based designer MFO.
CATERINA BARBIERI uses vivid modular synthesis to explore how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses in the listener.
Her full-length debut album Patterns of Consciousness (Important Records, 2017) was namedone of the best releases of the year and the decade (Resident Advisor, Noisey, Fact Mag, The Wire). Her 2019 release on Editions Mego, Ecstatic Computation, has been critically acclaimed and is record of the year on Bleep.
Barbieri holds a Master's degree in classical guitar and a Bachelor’s degree in electroacoustic composition from the Conservatory of Bologna, Italy, alongside a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy of Bologna with a thesis in Ethnomusicology about Hindustani music and minimalism.
KMRU is Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist Joseph Kamaru. For him, sound is a sensorial medium through which social, material and conceptual interpretations are manifested in his works. KMRU carries with him a repository of listening experiences from Nairobi and beyond expanding his sonic practices, bringing an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations and performances.
He has earned international acclaim from his performances at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, Présences électronique, and releases on Editions Mego, Subtext, Seil Records. About Deep Cricket Night:
Deep Cricket Night has come out of the pandemic with a sonic - style shift through the wormhole. We used the roots at the portal's gate as a ladder, climbing out of our past sound. The present sound regards fulfilling the new, post-pandemic range. For practical cliches, our sound is now akin to Joy Division meets 1970 Pink Floyd with Syd still in the room. The band is comprised of Lance Drake (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Greg MacAyeal(Bass), Dave Buoscio (Piano/Organ), Michael Ressler (drums).
Musically, DCN builds their original sound highlighted by the lead bass hooks of Greg MacAyeal and the vocal-lyrical strength of the band's primary songwriter, Lance Drake.
About Medical Miracle:
Medical Miracle is a two piece Chicago melancholic rock/ dream pop band powered by twinkly guitars and sad hearts

About:
Freddie is the embodiment of the Chicago Blues. The 2nd son of the world-famous 7th Son, Willie Dixon, Freddie has been surrounded by the Blues since the day he was born. His father is a blues legend as a song writer, producer, and musician. Willie was at the helm at Chess Records for many of the sides cut in the 1950’s, 1960’s and into the 1970’s.
Freddie began his blues career learning his chops playing with a number of musicians in south side blues clubs. He was soon hired to play in his father’s band, The Chicago Blues All-Stars and traveled around the world spreading the gospel of the blues.
The torch was handed to Freddie in the early 1990’s when his father passed away. Since then, Freddie has continued as a blues ambassador playing to crowds from Europe to Australia as well as locally in Chicago. In 2020 Freddie, along with Chicago Blues legends John Watkins and Maurice John Vaughan produced a 2 disc CD called “3x3,” which is available at most on line retail outlets.

About Zach Pietrini:
Milwaukee based Americana steeped The Zach Pietrin Band has become a hartland rock staple over the last few years. With a sound heavily influenced by the likes of David Ramirez, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, these guys know how to put on a show (Best Live Act In Milwaukee- Mil Mag). Their last release, Rock & Roll is Dead was lauded by the likes of Milwaukee Record, Music Mecca Nashville, 88nine, Milwaukee Mag, Americana Highways and many other regional publications. It broke into the top 100 on the college and indie charts in 22. The band can boast playing SXSW showcases or featured Summerfest spots or national songwriting contest winning or opening for several national touring acts but it's Pietrini's genuine and honest approach to songwriting and the band's contagious energy that make their live performance one to watch.
About Jodee Lewis:
A native of the Missouri Ozarks, Jodee was raised on folk songs and honky-tonk, and her music reflects the best of both worlds. The Chicago Tribune says she is “a singer-songwriter whose outsized talent is as big as her voice,” and calls her first album, Whiskey Halo, an “impressive solo debut”.
Of follow-up album, Buzzard’s Bluff, No Depression says "Buzzard's Bluff is a survivor's guide to healing, through and through, and it deserves a spin or a hundred." And PASTE magazine calls the album “a cathartic release from deep within the Missouri Ozarks. The natural lush landscapes are home to beautiful views, but just like the numerous birds of prey, a dark secret is always circling."
Jodee is often joined by Katie Abernethy on fiddle and vocals, and Doug Zylstra on guitar and vocals. A classically trained violin player, Katie is a member of the Elmhurst Symphony, teaches violin lessons and is the mother of three small children. An extremely accomplished musician, Doug also works full-time as a structural engineer. Additionally, they are two of the nicest people in the world.

About Maria Chávez:
Born in Lima, Peru and based in NYC, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Coincidence, chance and failures are themes that unite her work across mediums, including improvised performance, sound and marble sculpture, visual art, and book objects. Her approach is rooted in Deep Listening, a form of embodied listening developed by her late mentor Pauline Oliveros.
Maria is the only abstract turntablist in the world who performs with a rare needle known as the RAKE Double Needle. This special device contains two needles on one head, allowing it to read two different segments of a single record at the same time. Paired with her inimitable ability to create unforgettable sonic experiences from shards of broken records, each performance is truly unique.
Maria’s practice is profoundly expansive, responsive and curious. Her work has been featured and supported by a myriad of institutions over the past decades including Rewire Festival, Counterflows Festival, Donau Festival, The Guggenheim Museum, The Getty, The Wire, MOCA Jacksonville, Black Mountain College Museum and many, many more. Chavez’s 2012 book, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable has garnered a reputation as both an academic resource on turntablism and a foundational text for a new generation of turntablists.

About:
Sometimes, if you want to come home to yourself, you have to shake off everything you once thought was real. Human Human, the debut album from Chicago singer, songwriter, and producer Carlile, shines a beacon from that seat of transformation. A full-hearted and inexhaustibly generous pop treasure, Human Humanradiates with the joy of unfettered self-acceptance --and all the awkward, terrifying moments of surrender it takes to get to a place where you can finally fall in love with your own beautiful mess.Carlile is the middle name and performance alias of Emily Nichols, a longtime figure in Chicago's thriving underground music ecosystem. Over the past decade, she's issued a streak of glossy synthpop EPs while performing at storied venues and opening for big name indie artists. She meticulously laid the groundwork for her debut LP Human Human, an unselfconsciously playful and thrilling work of synth-pop recalling the warmth of Robyn and the luster of MUNA in its bold, sweeping arcs. This is an album that savors the pleasure of splashing a full rainbow of feeling against the wall. On Human HumanNichols also focused on expanding her production skills, a step that allowed her the freedom to realize her songs from spark to execution, down to the last details. "Prior to this album, I took a back seat role for production. These were the first songs where I was leading the charge," she says. Nichols worked with longtime collaborator Noam Wallenberg to crystallize the demos she had been recording. Together, Nichols and Wallenberg drew out the brightness that rings across Human Human, spangling songs like "Illusion" with delicate vocal accents and sowing layers upon layers of freewheeling harmonies into"Fake Nice." The album features production contributions from a noteworthy list of Chicago artists including Neal Francis, Luke Titus, Macie Stewart (of Finom), and Cocojoey.Recommended If You Like MUNA, Robyn,Caroline Polachek, Carly Rae Jepson, Maggie Rogers, Empress Of, Tove Lo, Mo, Kimbra.

About:
Feestet (pronounced “Feest-tet”) is a Madison-based “gateway jazz” ensemble fronted by vocalist Helen Feest.
For the Golden Hour, Feestet will perform as a trio featuring Chicago’s own Frank McKearn IV on the Electronic Valve Instrument. A 1970’s analog synthesizer with 7 octaves range, the EVI perfectly showcases both Frank’s trumpet chops and bass experience. They are joined by the project’s primary composer/arranger, Anthony Utehs, on guitar.

About:
If you were around during Chicago’s underground House Music movement or Rave scene in the late 80’s and early 90’s, then you’ll be utterly familiar with the name Julio Bishop. Whether from appearing weekly on some of the hottest party flyers throughout the Midwest or because you had a copy of his now infamous mix tape, “Love Nation” sold out of all the local record stores, the name Julio Bishop is synonymous with jacking dance floors since 1987.
Getting his start as a dancer and DJ in Chicago’s nightclubs and warehouses, but soon expanding his influence; from NYC to LA, to the beaches of Miami, Puerto Rico and Mexico, Germany and Sicily, Julio has been bringing his deep, mystifying grooves to the world for over 3 decades. His intimate knowledge of classic Afro-Latin and Jazz, , as well as his acquired proficiency of Disco, Electronica, Club & Deep House takes his sets far outside the realm of what is attainable by a greener selection of DJ’s.
Funneling his talents into the studio in the early 2000’s, Julio helped launch RealDEEP Recordings, along side label partner Brian Cullen (aka Bjak) where, together they paved the way to further coproductions and solo projects on labels such as Deep Explorer Music (Madrid) and Eargasmic Recordings (Chicago).
With more releases on the way and a selection of upcoming gigs scheduled between Chicago. Puerto Rico, LA & Hawaii, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for what’s to come next from this proved House Music veteran.

About Anna Soltys:
Anna Soltys and the Familiar is a modern folk rock band with an entrancing new sound. Anna spent the first part of her childhood in Poland followed by six years in Paris before moving to her self-proclaimed home, Chicago. It is this cross-cultural awareness that may awaken the type of delivery that is so new to her sound. In addition to the music, her lyrical, poetic content fills the heart with an awareness of the self we could all use a little of. The Familiar features Anna Soltys on vox and guitar, Larry Beer on drums/percussion, John Pirccucello on guitar/pedal/mandolin, Mark Piane on bass and David Smith on horns. Anna’s music explores and embodies elements of pain, strength, honesty, and sorrow. From start to finish, its lyrically-driven, simple melodies leave you with a sense of colorful melancholy with a twist of renewed hope for lighter days. Art was truly the only language she had. In addition to her music, Anna has spent over a decade creating public art in Chicago, working with communities, organizations, and individuals to install long-lasting messages of hope, love, and individuality. Whether in a home, on the side of a public building, or the facade of a business, these pieces function as landmarks.
About Ami Saraiya & Shirley Rosiers:
Singer-songwriters Shirley Rogiers and Ami Saraiya are embarking on an exciting new project, born from their years of collaboration and harmony in the cabaret rock-pop band, Ami Saraiya & The Outcome. This fresh partnership blends Shirley's theatrical burlesque flair and sharp wit with Ami's folksy cabaret sensibilities and gritty soul. They are thrilled to be joined by the exceptional Marc Piane, their former bandmate from The Outcome, on bass for this evening’s performance.

About:
Let’s Swing to Electro-Beats!
How do you combine the charming texts and catchy swing melodies from the golden twenties with contemporary electro-beats? German musician Friedrich Rau and his band present new and creative songs in the style of the so-called Electro-Swing! Inspired by the light-heartedness of the Jazz Age, yet rooted in today’s technology-oriented society, he, together with guitarist and singer Tim Ludwig and drummer Sebastian Stahl, created an entirely new and fresh sound! The result consists of witty and thought-provoking songs performed to catchy tunes that are perfect for a club performance, whether you want to dance to them or just listen or sing along! Although the songs will be in German, texts and translations will be provided!
Friedrich Rau is a German singer, songwriter, composer, and musical performer, and currently lives in Leipzig. He studied music at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar and performed in many musicals like DER MEDICUS (The Physician), THE FAMOUS DOOR ON SWING STREET, ROBIN HOOD, THE WHO'S TOMMY and THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW. He also composed a musical called SCHNEEWEISSCHEN UND ROSENTORT and has been touring regionally and internationally with his own songs.
