About:
Join the RSU and local artists Jenasais, DJ Daddy Wannie, CigaretteSergeant, Qualia, and DJ Culebra for a night of techno and collective struggle! This show is in collaboration with Immersion Chicago, a new, local techno collective that aims to make techno political again. Less than 50 years ago, Chicago’s techno and house scene was born as a joyful gathering of the oppressed and outcasted. Today, there’s hardly a trace of the counter-cultural and vocally political attitude our city’s live music once had. The collective rejects the monopoly that private equity holds over Chicago’s music scene. Immersion says “DIY will always be the answer - be the change you wanna see in the world!”

About:
Born in Michigan and raised on a steady diet of soul, disco, and classic Chicago house, Viridian has spent more than a decade in the Windy City refining his craft as a music producer, and DJ. His signature sound draws heavily from these roots, favoring slow-burning energy, hypnotic chords, and a sensual tension that evolves into an uplifting crescendo.
By weaving nostalgic disco samples with underground funk and modern basslines, Viridian creates an inclusive, positive space where the past and future of dance music meet. It’s a balanced sound—approachable to legacy purists and fresh ears alike—that radiates a deep-seated passion for the groove while reminding us exactly why we gather on the dancefloor in the first place. About Susie McCollum:
With old soul vulnerability and a rich vocal palette, indie artist Susie McCollum lives at the intersection of raw emotion and refined craft. Originally from New York City and now based in Chicago, McCollum blends timeless songwriting with a contemporary edge - drawing inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and Amy Winehouse.
A lifelong student of music, McCollum’s journey spans opera, theater, jazz, R&B, & folk - providing an eclectic background that informs her textured, authentic sound. Her mesmerizing and poetic lyricism is fueled by compassion, wit, and an insatiable curiosity about the human experience. Susie is also a self-taught guitarist - a pandemic hobby turned renewed sense of artistic purpose.
Susie arrived on the scene with the celebrated single “New Year’s Eve” in 2022, praised by A&R Factory as a “part-love song, part-indie-soulful ode to bittersweet tradition.” Her 2024 debut EP Tempt My Fate captivated audiences as "stirring and uniquely powerful” (CLOUT Magazine) for its soulful vocal and poignant songwriting. She has worked alongside artists like Christopher, Nep, and Marielle Kraft, while most recently co-writing “I Should Lose You” with indie-pop artist Jenny Kern. In addition to singing, writing, and producing, Susie has also honed her skills as a recording engineer - enabling her to truly inhabit every layer of the creative process.
Susie released her highly anticipated single “Abigail” on October 24th, whose "dreamy hush works medicinally; it doesn’t push catharsis, it coaxes it" (Uranium Waves). The work is fueled by finding a home within oneself and asking: what does it mean to truly grow up… and do we ever?
Through heartfelt melodies and soul-stirring lyrics, Susie invites listeners into a shared space of introspection and re-invention - marking her a singular and invaluable talent in today’s music scene.
About Andrew Hoyt:
Andrew Hoyt is a full-time touring singer/songwriter blending folk, pop, and acoustic vibes into a sound that’s both warm and unique. He’s performed at major venues like Wells Fargo Arena and shared the stage with artists such as AJR, Jesse McCartney, David Archuleta and Eric Hutchinson. His latest EP, Kind of Paradise, produced by Nashville’s Lucas Morton and mixed by Micah Tawlks, marks a new chapter in his artistry. The project features songs co-written with acclaimed artists Matt Wertz and Andy Davis, weaving heartfelt lyrics with melodies that feel like sunshine and nostalgia.
About Josh Trimble:
Josh Trimble is an independent multi-media artist based out of Chicago, Illinois. His trifecta of focus is poured into music, film, and photography. His debut project, “Love & Adolescence” serves as the flagship of his creative offerings. The 10-song album has been officially printed to physical copies and can be purchased through direct inquiry. The project will be accompanied by a self-written, directed, and acted film consisting of 6 of the album's featured tracks.
Pulling influence from the likes of Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Jordan Rakei, and Madison Cunningham, Josh’s music weaves bold storytelling into the throws of his siren-like melodies and fervent guitar playing.
His most recent digital release, "Vagary", is the lead-single off of the album and delivers a story of love & loss illustrated by achey cellos and aleatoric vocals.

About Jade Maze:
Jade Maze mixes soul, jazz, blues and pop into one big heart-filled voice. From the first note, you know she is singing about lived experiences. She started out with soul and jazz bands on the West Coast, toured with her original band on the East Coast, and made Chicago her home in the mid-90s, where she foraged her way onto the blues and jazz scenes. Jade loves the intimacy of duo work as well, especially with guitar, bass, or piano. Her CD My Favorite Color is Blue features Brother John Kattke (piano/guitar) and John “Boom” Brumbach (saxophone) to name a few.
Jade also happens to be an award-winning author. Her debut memoir, Walk Until Sunrise, took a first-place world literary prize (Rome), and the follow-up memoir entitled Mercy’s View: Blackout won a 2025 Best Book Pinnacle Achievement Award. The memoirs chronicle her teenage runaway experience, her reentry into society, and the beginning stages of her singing career. To offset the intensity of that work, Jade writes short stories where at least one of the story characters is a singer (Music Notes: Tales from an American Singer). They are hilarious!
About Brother John Kattke:
Local legend Brother John Kattke (a.k.a. Brother John) is one of the most talented and versatile musicians on the Chicago music scene today. Performing double duty on both guitar and keyboards, Brother John has been a vital musical component behind some of the blues’ most lauded musicians, including Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Koko Taylor. Through his work with Chicago blues greats Buddy Guy & Otis Rush, he has jammed with Eric Clapton and Steve Miller, auditioned for the Black Crowes (in 1998, but they hired Jimmy Page instead), and acquired ringing endorsements from many other musicians of renown. For example: Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant had seen John play with Otis Rush at the Jazz Café in London. When Plant and Kattke met in person at the United Center in Chicago, Plant told Kattke: “You play a mean guitar!” George Benson came to the jam session that Kattke hosts at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. After hearing the opening set that John played with his band, Benson told him: “You’re fearless! I thought I was fearless! You’re fearless!”

About:
Presented by journalist Alexandra Salomon and followed by a post-screening conversation with director Susan Dobinsky, artist Sandra Antongiorgi, and photographer Ivan Justiniano. In the late 1980s, filmmakers Susan Dobinsky and Julia Kurtz were at work on Street Signs, a film about murals and muralists in Chicago. They filmed street scenes punctuated by images of the powerful and colorful murals in the city’s Pilsen, Little Village, West Town, and Humboldt Park neighborhoods, along with interviews with artists, educators, students, and activists who lived on these communities. When Dobinsky and Kurtz began the project, their objective was to make a film about the way murals become a means of communication within and outside of immigrant communities. Their plan was to explore the social and psychological aspects of murals, and the corollaries that exist between the artistry of mural-making and language. Though their film was never completed, CFA is presenting a work-in-process edit completed in 1990, featuring the voices and works of artist Sandra Antongiorgi, muralist Jose Guerrero, and photographer Ivan Justiniano, among others.
ABOUT THE INSIDE/OUT SERIES
Displacement implies a concept of home. At its best, home is a place where love, belonging and safety comfortably reside.Chicago Film Archives presents Inside/Out: Stories of Origin and Dis/Placement, a series of four extraordinary films made by four Chicago-based women who by nature are adventurous, deeply curious, and brave. They are also mostly unheard of until now. The concept of “displacement” is securely embedded in each of their stories, whether it resides within the communities they film or within their own lived experience. Although each filmmaker offers a narrative distinctly different from the others, individuals’ efforts to survive and adapt to displacement run constant through all of their films. To better understand the effects of displacement, it may be useful to consider the concept of home: What does it mean to “feel at home”? Is “belonging” synonymous with “home”? Is having a sense of “home” essential to the well-being or understanding of self? Does “home” reside in a structure, a person(s), a country or a culture? What might be lost or gained when one is displaced? To explore these concepts and considerations, Alexandra Salomon, Senior Editor with Chicago Public Media, Nissa Rhee, cofounder of Borderless magazine and a seasoned writer, editor and entrepreneur in the field of journalism, and Natalie Moore, a Chicago-based journalist and author of The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation, will facilitate conversations around these four films and how “displacement” and its consequences are woven throughout lives in each story.PROGRAMS IN THIS SERIES

About:
Presented by Nissa Rhee, journalist and cofounder of Borderless Magazine, and followed by a post-screening conversation with director Silvia Malagrino.Born in Buenos Aires, Silvia Malagrino left Argentina in 1978 when her life as a young university student became dangerously entangled with politics surrounding the “Dirty War” and the resistance movement which materialized under one of Argentina’s most brutal military dictatorships. In the midst of the disappearance of so many young protestors and their friends, Malagrino left her country of birth and settled in Chicago. While earning her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois-Chicago, she built a career as an educator, multimedia artist, photographer, and filmmaker. In the mid-1990s she returned to Argentina to film and record the voices of mothers and grandmothers whose children had been “disappeared” in the resistance. As Robert J. Fox, chief editor of the Buenos Aires Herald, famously said of those times, “All of the institutions in Argentina failed. The only institution that didn’t fail was motherhood.” In her film, Malagrino includes her own voice among the others as she synthesizes her memories and experiences of those dangerous years. Burnt Oranges, is a very personal and poetic memoir of this war and its continuing aftermath.

Come dressed in your most elevated look, your boldest expression, and the style that represents your own journey. This is your opportunity to be seen, celebrated, and inspired. Your journey is still unfolding. Join us as we discover where it leads.
About Emergent Fashion Society:
Emergent Fashion Society is a creative platform dedicated to discovering, elevating, and creating opportunities for emerging fashion talent.
Founded with the belief that talent deserves access, visibility, and a space to thrive, Emergent exists to bridge the gap between emerging creatives and the opportunities needed to grow. Through fashion experiences, industry connections, and community-driven initiatives, we provide artists with a platform to showcase their work, build meaningful relationships, and take the next step in their creative journey.
At the heart of Emergent is a commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices within the fashion industry. We believe the future of fashion is shaped by diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and creators who have historically lacked the resources and opportunities to be seen.
By creating spaces where designers, models, photographers, stylists, and creatives can connect and collaborate, Emergent Fashion Society is building a community where emerging talent is not only recognized but supported. We are here to uncover the next generation of creative leaders and provide the platform they need to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

About:
The Bad Sneakers Orchestra is a tribute band formed in 2010 by Chicago bassist Paul Martin with an ambitious mission statement: to faithfully recreate the music of Steely Dan live, as represented on their classic albums. This goal necessitated a very large 14-piece ensemble, so that multiple keys and guitar parts, intricate vocal harmonies, and rich horn textures could be realized. After 10+ years of performances (with time off for Covid) the band is at its’ peak, offering the signature Fagen/Becker compositions with a casual aplomb and precision. (They make it look easy. It’s not.) And despite the fastidious attention paid to the recorded material, the members inevitably bring their individual voiceprints to bear within the framework of a cover tune.
A number of Chicago legends have guest starred with the Sneakers over the years, including fusion guitarists Ernie Denov, Chris Siebold, and Mike Pinto, vocalists Mike Harvey (who appeared on 2 Steely Dan albums and a Donald Fagen solo album), Cheryl Wilson (Peabo Bryson, Bertie Higgins), gospel sensation Tina Crawley, and saxophonist Steve Eisen. The charter members are top-drawer Chicago musicians, with decades of experience performing with some of the greatest names in the music industry. The current roster of regular members reads as follows:
Stevie Robinson Lead vocalist
Neal Alger Guitars
Mike Pinto Guitars
Kent Wehman Keys
Carter Luke Keys
Paul Martin Bass, Musical Director
Neal Wehman Drums
Dave Katz Trumpet
John Mose Trombone
John Bowes Tenor/Alto Sax
Tim McNamara Bari/Tenor Sax
Gayle Bisesi Background Vocals
Ameerah Tatum Lead/background vocals
Maggie Bynum Lead/background vocals

About:
Michael Charles' musical pilgrimage began over six decades ago in his homeland Melbourne, Victoria Australia.
While enjoying a successful musical crusade of touring, recording, and numerous television and radio appearances in his homeland, Michael received an invitation from Buddy Guy’s management to appear at the infamous Legends in Chicago, Illinois USA. Graciously accepting the honor, Michael Charles traveled the twelve thousand five hundred miles and took the stage with Mr. Buddy Guy. After numerous trips back and forth, Michael made the monumental and life changing decision to make America his new home. Charles worked the whole Chicago blues circuit performing with Mr. Buddy Guy, Phil Guy, James Cotton, Eddy Clearwater, Junior Wells, George Baze, as well as touring with blues legend, Jimmy Dawkins.
Through the next thirty years, and now a ten times Grammy elected artist, Michael Charles enjoyed being featured in numerous television and radio broadcasts and several music magazines, along with gracing countless stages and pages including Chicago Blues Fest, Philadelphia Jazz and Blues Fest, Windy City Live Television, WGN TV, JBTV, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun Times, and The College Music Journal.
In October of 2015 Michael Charles received the extreme honor of an induction into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame. Michael has received endorsements from Vertex and LR Baggs and in Canada from Godin / Seagull Guitars. Michael Charles’ discography is comprised of thirty-seven releases including a double CD thirty year anthology.
In 2016 renowned Australian film producer, Salik Silverstein started work on a documentary chronicling the musical career of Michael Charles. The Documentary was released in March of 2018 and the DVD in 2019. "Soundtracked", the CD soundtrack to the documentary was also released in 2019. Charles' releases to date number forty-three.

About:
A 2025 City of Chicago Individual Artists Program awardee, guitarist and composer Brian Citro has been playing and writing music for 35 years. He studied with renowned guitarist Fareed Haque and is a long-time member of The Drastics. He’s performed and toured with JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub!, Ackah Blay in Ghana, and many others.
Brian’s new album Keep Moving (Home), on Calligram Records, features 14 original compositions performed by his jazz quartet with Nick Mazzarella on saxophones, Quin Kirchner on drums, and Matt Uleryon bass. Recorded to tape by engineer Dave Vettraino at Chicago’s Palisade Studio, the album presents an “emotionally resonant … convergence of composition, performance, sound, and visual presentation” (Paris Move). The music flows from Brian’s experiences as a musician and human rights lawyer living in India and traveling in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Brian’s previous album, Acoustic Pastime on ears&eyes Records, features solo guitar arrangements of his compositions and Thelonious Monk tunes. Brian also leads an organ trio with Tom Vaitsas on organ and Peter Mack on drums, and he co-leads The Hey Lows with multi-instrumentalist and producer Lance Loiselle. Here, the Brian Citro Quartet performs Kenny Garrett’s Soldiers of the Fields at the Hungry Brain: https://www.briancitro.com/videos/v/brian-citro-quartet-soldiers-of-the-fields-hungry-brain-chicago.

About:
Thunder rumbles threateningly at an ambiguous distance, birds efficiently scatter, and the arms of the trees above wield their leaves through the air … we walk beneath the sky, the trees, a murder of crows, greens and browns and greys collide in in our visual fields as we press forward. Overland marks the third season of the FM Cello and Piano Duo, and features works that move through soundscapes of legends and memory by Ludwig van Beethoven, Natasha Bogojević, and Amy Wurtz.
Cacie Miller is a Chicago area pianist. She holds degrees in piano performance and music theory from several institutions, including the Eastman School of Music, University of Illinois, Houghton University and University of Southern Maine. Cacie has participated in solo and chamber festivals in Germany, Puerto Rico, Piedmont, and Chautauqua. She recently premiered several solo and chamber works, including her composition AlteredHome. She curates the Second Sunday Concert Series and maintains a vibrant multi-age studio in her Oak Park home.
Christopher Ferrer explores sound through performances on acoustic, amplified, and electric cello in many styles and genres. He is principal cellist of Camerata Chicago and a founding member of Lakeshore Rush. Christopher was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and attended the Royal College of Music & Northern Illinois University– studying chamber music with Julian Jacobsen, Janet Hilton, Warren Jones, Lewis Kaplan, Yehuda Hanani, Alastair Blayden, and Mathias Tacke.

About:
Fish and The Cats
Welcome to Fish and the Cats!
Jazz that swings, grooves, bops and rocks.
Come enjoy some great jazz in Chicago with Fish & the Cats! We love playing music from the Great American Song Book and other favorites that have stood the test of time.
You'll hear classics like "Honeysuckle Rose" and "What a Wonderful World," along with songs like "Cantaloupe Island" and "Moondance" – music that spans several generations.
Our group includes talented musicians and a vocalist who really brings the songs to life. You can catch us performing around Chicago, especially in Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town.
We've been fortunate to connect with audiences who appreciate jazz and keep inviting us back. If you enjoy live music and want to hear some well-played standards, we'd love to have you join us.
Why people like our performances: We focus on playing music we genuinely care about, and that enthusiasm tends to be contagious.

About:
Hailing from Brussels, multidisciplinary artist ShunGu has quietly carved out a unique place in the subterranean music scene, blending jazz-infused sampling with cosmic grooves that defy gravitational life force. A relentless sound architect, ShunGu’s aesthetics bridge the worlds of hip-hop, jazz, psych-rock, and house with intellectual curiosity and playful creativity.
His critically acclaimed debut, A Black Market Album, showcased his knack for crafting his own sound narratives. This penchant for weaving stories through sound extended into his prolific cassette discography on the revered label Hot Record Société, where his lo-fi gems captured the hearts of beat enthusiasts around the globe.
ShunGu’s eclectic taste has also found a home on celebrated compilations, from ‚Gang- ster Music Vol. 1’ by Gangster Doodles to ‚The Beauty Is Inside’, curated by Lefto on BBE Records, ‚Afro Chronicles’ on Touching Bass Records and ‚Looking Glass’ by Mexican Sum- mer. Each track reveals his mastery of subtlety and his ability to craft beats that feel both timeless and forward-thinking.
Under the alias Senga, ShunGu explores his Detroit-infused house alter ego, channeling spiritual rhythms and mind-bending textures. His acclaimed album Take The Evil Spirit Away by Senga Ferrera stands as living proof of his versatility, elevating dance floors into sacred spaces through tantalizing MPC-driven live sessions. With more house-focused extended players on the pipeline, Senga continues to expand ShunGu’s legacy in the industry.
Looking ahead, ShunGu prepare to release his highly anticipated album, Faith in the Unknown, on the legendary Lex Records in mid-2025 with a surefire roster of collaborators including Pink Siifu, Liv.e, Fly Anakin, Chester Watson, Fatima, Maxo, Navy Blue, Dream- castmoe, Contour, Zekeultra and Goya Gumbani. This forthcoming project promises to further cement his reputation as a visionary artist pushing the boundaries of genre.

Performed by Gary Thomas and The Mid-Century Modern Ensemble, the show is built around Sinatra’s landmark 1956 album Songs for Swingin’ Lovers and features its sparkling essentials alongside a handpicked set of Sinatra favorites—romantic, witty, and irresistibly swinging. About:
In the fall of 2023, my cancer battle began. I hadn’t been feeling quite right. The results of my physical examination revealed alarmingly high PSA levels, causing a great deal of anxiety and fear.
After a visit to my urologist, the testing began. MRI’s, biopsies, probes and then a PSMA PET scan. On December 23rd, I received the diagnosis – Metastatic Prostate Cancer. In the New Year, I began the fight of my life, enduring five rounds of chemotherapy. In mid-May, feeling gratitude, strength and hope, I rang the “Bell” - a powerful moment in my cancer treatment.
Facing metastatic cancer requires tremendous strength and resilience. Through it all, music has been my source of faith, energy, comfort and confidence. Music and singing have been a lifelong passion. One that continues to inspire and sustain me to this day. Sit back, relax and enjoy the concert. It’s a reflection of the music that has shaped the soundtrack of my life.

About:
Beaph is a Chicago-based duo comprised of Vocalist Bunga (Bea) Fuadin and guitarist Stephen Ryan. Bunga’s RnB background meets Stephen’s jazz-folk guitar playing to create a soft blend for their music. They created Beaph, a combination of both Stephen’s name and Bunga’s nickname “Bea”, while attending Columbia College Chicago in 2023. After being assigned to be in a guitar/vocal duo together, they’ve continued to write, record, and perform their original songs. Although they often play as a duo, they sometimes appear with a band featuring bassist Dante Nottoli, drummer Will Penne, and pianist Miles Pretel.
You can find them around the Chicago area performing their originals as well as their arrangements of various covers ranging from genres such as classic soul, jazz, rnb, pop, and country. They have also released an album named “Beaph and Friends: Live”, a live album from their joint senior recitals which includes features from their friends and paints the picture of their musical journeys as well as their love for one another.

About:
We are the Cat Gaddis Project - an awesome Blues and R&B Band with talented Chicago area musicians.
Cat Gaddis Project performs an incredible live show with a core line-up of lead singer Cat Gaddis and tight rhythm section with awesome guitar, bass, drums & keyboards. Cat has played with Wayne Cochran and other bands from the past. We recently added a 3-piece horn section with saxophone, trombone, & trumpet - all are great musicians. See links below.
https://thecatgaddisproject.com/home
https://thecatgaddisproject.com/the-band
The Cat Gaddis Project live performance is a fun experience - with audiences tapping their feet, dancing, and grooving to the music. Cat Gaddis Project (CGP) played 2 shows at the Montrose Saloon earlier this year, and Buddy Guy's Legends on May 16. CGP also performed at the Alley Art Festival in Aurora, IL, Northcenter Town Square in Chicago, and outdoor festivals are great venues for the band. We also recently played at Old Elburn Hall, a BBQ Fest in the summer, and coming to the Epiphany Center for the Arts on Dec 5. The band has been in the studio recording new material; however, most of their repertoire are cover versions of well-known blues and r&b songs !

About:
Ben Dunnill doesn’t just play music; he commands it. Armed with a timeless, gravel-and-silk voice and a staggering mental jukebox of over 5,000 songs memorized entirely by heart, the Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist bridges the gap between eras with effortless, classic soul.
Ben's story began at 13 years old in White Rock, B.C. While most kids his age were navigating middle school, Ben was stepping onto professional stages, cutting his teeth in the unforgiving boot camp of smoky piano bars. Over the span of a decade, he transformed those venues into his personal laboratory, mastering the lost arts of heavy improvisation, razor-sharp showmanship, and the rare ability to capture a room’s collective heartbeat.
That relentless grind eventually met the digital age, sparking a global wildfire. Ben captivated an online audience of over a million followers by turning convention on its head: dismantling hard-hitting rap anthems like 50 Cent’s “Many Men” and Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” and rebuilding them as sweeping, cinematic jazz masterpieces. The internet took notice, generating over 200 million views and drawing ecstatic praise from modern icons like Michael Bublé, Laufey, and Joe Rogan.
But while interpreting the greats and reimagining the unexpected built his foundation, Ben is stepping out from behind the safety of the classic songbook. The sweeping success of his original standouts like the cinematic, storytelling-rich “Till the Credits Roll” and the show-stopping “Encore” has signaled a massive creative evolution. No longer just an elite interpreter of other people's masterpieces, Ben's next definitive chapter shifts the spotlight directly onto his own pen.
A deeply respected collaborator who co-wrote and co-produced the chart-topping jazz record Anything Goes with Mathew V, Ben has already brought his magnetic energy to Canada’s most prestigious stages, including Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Now, armed with a growing catalog of hits that are uniquely his own, Ben Dunnill is stepping into the spotlight as an authentic powerhouse entertainer who honors the golden age of music while fiercely rewriting its future.

About:
One of the busiest blues outfits in Chicagoland, the Smiley Tillmon Band is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. There’s an obvious reason why the veteran guitarist’s booking schedule is so jam-packed: Smiley knows how to have a good time and makes sure his audience does too. After 65 years on the local blues scene, Tillmon serves up the blues and soul standards that people never seem to stop craving, his rich vocals and fluid guitar backed by a band that keeps his grooves tight and right.
Born Moses Tillmon in rural Jefferson County, Georgia, Smiley grew up on a hearty musical diet of gospel, country, and a little blues. His mother moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was ten; there he was exposed to calypso music, adding up to a singular list of influences. Tillmon took up guitar and was good enough by the dawn of the ‘60s to back Miami R&B singer Billy Miranda in the studio. He joined Sammy Ambrose & the Afro-Beats, a calypso-oriented band, touring from Canada to New York. Smiley bid the Afro-Beats adieu in 1962 and moved to Chicago. There he established himself on the blues circuit, playing with Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Denise LaSalle, and other South Side luminaries until he opted for a day job in 1977.
Upon his 2007 retirement, Smiley reverted to full-time musical status. He joined forces with bassist Tom Rezetko, and they’ve been inseparable onstage ever since.

About:
A graduate of Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor’s degree in vocal jazz performance and acting studies, Lester has spent over 15 years shaping stages across the Midwest and South. His artistry has anchored powerhouse ensembles such as the Dennis Keith Experience, TVK Orchestra, and the Chicago Elite Orchestra, while his solo work—released under the name Lester Jay—blends house, R&B, and pop into a signature sound found on streaming platforms worldwide.
Lester’s musical journey is rooted in collaboration and community. He has worked with celebrated producers and DJs including DJ Ron Pullman (Atlanta), DJ Craig C (Colorado), The Bodega Boys (New York), and Deep Soul Syndicate (Chicago). His voice has crossed genres and generations, leading to creative partnerships with Grammy Award–winner Shawn Hibbler, Drag Race icons Yvie Oddly and Shea Coulee, and dynamic live performance collaborations with artists like Donald Lawrence and talents from American Idol.
At the heart of Lester’s artistry lies a deeper calling: honoring the legacy of Black soul and the artists who shaped it.
Today, Lester Jay and his band, The Jaystones, are in production for the ULTIMATE Luther Vandross Tribute—a show that celebrates Luther not only as a musical titan, but as a quiet, powerful pillar of Black queer expression. For Lester, Luther Vandross was more than a voice; he was a mirror. A reminder that tenderness, vulnerability, elegance, and emotional truth are sacred parts of Black identity, especially within the queer community. This tribute stands as a love letter to Luther and to the Black soul artists whose brilliance continues to inspire generations.
Lester’s performances—whether leading his band, honoring Amy Winehouse in Tears Dry on Their Own, or joining forces in collaborative live performances—are marked by a magnetic stage presence and a voice that carries both technical mastery and emotional depth. With The Jaystones behind him, each show becomes a cinematic experience: lush, intimate, and unforgettable.
Join Lester Jay on this journey through soul, memory, and celebration. Every note is a story. Every performance is an offering. And this tribute to Luther Vandross is a moment you won’t want to miss.
