About:
Afro Dead is a musical collective formed in 2022 by Aaron Feder to reimagine the music of the Grateful Dead in Afro-Pop styles, such as soukous, Afrobeat, high-life, reggae and more. He has been able to use his experience as founder and band leader of Alma Afrobeat Ensemble (four albums, four US tours) and co-founder of the record label Slow Walk Music (home to African music made in Spain) resulting in a Summer 2024 tour of the US and Canada, and a Fall 2024 tour of Spain.
For 2026 the band will feature the amazing singer London Kay, most known for touring with Heart and the internationally touring Grateful Dead act Terrapin Flyer.
Aaron Feder has been a lifelong participant in the Grateful Dead’s music scene, having played and recorded with Grammy award winners Peter Rowan and Eric Krasno, as well as members of Phil Lesh and Friends, Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon, Everyone Orchestra and much more. Aaron’s varied musical experiences has helped create a vibrant, one-of-a-kind musical project, mixing classic Americana compositions with danceable African grooves and a healthy dose of improvisation.
The band’s version of Dark Star was featured on the compilation “The Music Plays the Band” alongside Dark Star Orchestra, Oteil Burbridge, ALO and many more.
Josh Olken (Terrapin Flyer) who has recently played with Al Dimeola and Derek Trucks, will be joining Afro Dead for this special show. Aaron and Josh have played many shows together, and bring an even more special flavor to this concert, combining their two unique interpretations of Jerry Garcia's six string legacy into a version of the Dead's songs you never expected!

About Manasseh:
Manasseh is a Chicago South Side-born vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and creative director whose work bridges soul, R&B, jazz, and cinematic soundscapes. Raised in the church and influenced early on by his mother—a gifted vocalist—his musical foundation was shaped through years of choir singing, which continues to inform his emotive, technically precise vocal approach.
Currently working as a vocal/session coach, background vocalist, songwriter, and music supervisor, Manasseh is widely regarded as a trusted collaborator and “go-to” creative for artists across genres. His work has appeared in major cultural spaces and media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, EarMilk, and Ambient Vibez. His song “Inches” was featured on Tyler Perry’s BET hit series Sistas (Season 2, Episode 4).
In addition to his work as a recording and performing artist, Manasseh served as Music Supervisor for the short film Take 290, further expanding his footprint in visual media and narrative-driven sound design.
Manasseh has toured and collaborated with Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter Marquis Hill, contributed vocals to Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox, and joined international pop star JoJo on her Too Much To Say Tour and at the Taste of Chicago. He has also served as music supervisor for the short film Take 290, created original programming for Malcolm X College, and regularly headlines shows and high-end corporate events nationwide.
His debut album Monochromatic Dream was released in 2022, followed by EPs including Variations V1 – I’ll Be. His forthcoming album, R&B[eyond], arrives Spring 2026 and is already earning early praise, signaling a bold next chapter in his evolving artistic vision.
Check out his new album, R&B[eyond], dropping on his birthday, 8/25!

About:
AfriClassical Futures is a quarterly music and conversation series that foregrounds the accomplishments of Black composers and musicians from the diaspora and beyond that are educated or working in, around, or influenced by Western Classical music and classical traditions more broadly.
This program features works that invoke contemplation, memory, and ecstatic vision towards a liberated world, finding joy in the ordinary and extraordinary alike. Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan D’Arc for 10 cellos and the Prelude for solo voice meditate on the saintly visions a young Joan D’Arc received during periods of religious ecstasy in her youth and the message to “speak boldly.” One More Angel by guest conductor/composer Ahmed Al Abaca, written in honor of their Aunt Ra, is a reflection on the fullness and complexity of life and the cherished memories we create with our elders. This program will also feature a new composition for 10 cellos and voice with text by olula negre, an aubade on the quotidian and transitory nature of dawn as it relates to the experience of queerness. A brief conversation between Ahmed Al Abaca and series curators Julain Otis and olula negre will follow the music.
This event is free and open to the public. This AfriClassical Futures program is made possible by support from: The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, Prince Charitable Trust, Aaron Copland Foundation, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, New Music USA and Elastic Arts Foundation.
Bios:
Ahmed Al Abaca | conductor/composer
Ahmed Al Abaca is a composer and conductor based in Chicago. Ahmed has had the fortune of being commissioned and performed by ensembles [The Florida Orchestra, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, The Atlanta Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival, D-Composed String Quartet] national radio [Performance Today, MPR], and Theatre companies [Olympia Children Theatre] throughout the United States and Europe. Ahmed has had the pleasure of working as both conductor and composer with Chicago Civic Orchestra Fellows, Chicago Sinfonietta (conductor) and D-Composed (composer). Ahmed focuses on performing music by not only living composers but composers from the Chicago area, with an emphasis on women and composers of color. Ahmed believes in the transformative power of music, and to continue to inspire up-and-coming composers, we must show them, through programming, that they have a place in this industry and on American stages.
Julian Terrell Otis | vocalist, curator
Julian Terrell Otis is a vocalist dedicated to the advancement of Black music in America, spanning genres from creative music and jazz, to contemporary classical. His work explores the limitless possibilities of his instrument’s expressive capacity through song, improvisation, and theater. Known for bringing fresh perspective, nuance, and “high drama” to the contemporary music world, the integration of performance “live art” elements is of particular interest to him. Otis’s experiences have led him to create the male soloist role in George E. Lewis’ chamber opera, Afterword, on both domestic and international stages. In exploring the life and work of Julius Eastman, Otis has performed his solo work, Prelude for the Holy Presence of Joan of Arc. He revived Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King at the inaugural Bang on a Can All Star’s Loud Weekend, and is devising works focusing on improvisation, electronics, and movement. All the Pretty Flowers is his first recording project of improvised music and poetry. Committed to community empowerment, he led an improvised jam for South Side Chicago communities called Self Care = Resistance! And curates the AfriClassical Futures series at Elastic Arts in Chicago’s Logan Square/Avondale neighborhood.
olula negre | cellist, curator
The rustbelt grandchild of twin migrations from Alabama and Puerto Rico, olula negre, is a creative musician (cello/voice/banjo), avant-folklorist and multi-disciplinary artist based between Cleveland and Chicago. olula creates multi-instrumental electroacoustic music blending cello, voice and effects to create music that queers contemporary classical, experimental jazz, and folk traditions with deep reverence for Black diasporic traditions.
olula holds a bachelors from The Hartt School in Cello Performance and a masters from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee in Contemporary Classical Performance Practice. They have been in-residence at CUNY Hunter College, The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and Elastic Arts. They are co-curator, alongside Julian Terrell Otis, of AfriClassical Futures, a quarterly music and conversation series at Elastic.
Julius Eastman | composer
Julius Eastman (1940-1990) was a Black American, gay composer and pioneer of post-minimalist music, challenging the conventions of classical music during the 70s and 80s. Eastman was a defining voice of New York’s contemporary classical scene. His music, largely forgotten after his early passing, has seen a resurgence in the 21st century.

About:
Presented by Chicago journalist Natalie Moore and followed by a post-screening conversation.Maria Moraites’ documentary A Nice Place to Live (1974) examines neighborhood roots, property values, urban revitalization, gentrification, and race relations from the perspectives of both well-established and incoming residents of Chicago’s Austin community area. Her observations come amid a rapid demographic turnover propelled by the Federal Housing Authority, real estate interests, mortgage lenders, and insurance companies’ redlining and blockbusting tactics imposed upon the neighborhood through the early 1970s. Moraites says of the film, “It was a labor of love to document how both the lives of White and Black people were impacted by outside interests. This, of course, is not unique to Austin”.
ABOUT THE INSIDE/OUT SERIES
Displacement implies a concept of home. At its best, home is a place where love, belonging and safety comfortably reside.Chicago Film Archives presents Inside/Out: Stories of Origin and Dis/Placement, a series of four extraordinary films made by four Chicago-based women who by nature are adventurous, deeply curious, and brave. They are also mostly unheard of until now. The concept of “displacement” is securely embedded in each of their stories, whether it resides within the communities they film or within their own lived experience. Although each filmmaker offers a narrative distinctly different from the others, individuals’ efforts to survive and adapt to displacement run constant through all of their films. To better understand the effects of displacement, it may be useful to consider the concept of home: What does it mean to “feel at home”? Is “belonging” synonymous with “home”? Is having a sense of “home” essential to the well-being or understanding of self? Does “home” reside in a structure, a person(s), a country or a culture? What might be lost or gained when one is displaced? To explore these concepts and considerations, Alexandra Salomon, Senior Editor with Chicago Public Media, Nissa Rhee, cofounder of Borderless magazine and a seasoned writer, editor and entrepreneur in the field of journalism, and Natalie Moore, a Chicago-based journalist and author of The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation, will facilitate conversations around these four films and how “displacement” and its consequences are woven throughout lives in each story.PROGRAMS IN THIS SERIES

About Hearthands:
Hearthands is an indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Formed at the end of 2024, Hearthands released their debut EP Devotion in September of the following year, which was recorded at Electrical Audio with producer Nick Netherton. In September 2026, Hearthands will be releasing their first full length record Destroyer. Collaborating again with Nick Netherton, Hearthands spent 7 days in a barn making the record come to life. Moving away from the dreamier sounds of Devotion, the record takes inspiration from 90s slowcore, 60s jangly guitar music, noise pop, and current DIY bands in the Midwest while maintaining an interest in 80s chorus effects and shoegaze glide guitar. The band is composed of members Abigail Miller, Jacob Wolf, Jordan Zamansky, Maddie Haynes, and Mike Higgins. The members of Hearthands are active in the Chicago music scene and also play in the projects A Giant Pit of Glass, Able Baker, Herald Looms, and Sunshy.

About:
Presented by journalist Alexandra Salomon and followed by a post-screening conversation with director Susan Stechnij.Mi Raza: Portrait of a Family is a documentary film about a working class Mexican American family dealing with the stresses of maintaining their cultural heritage in the face of the dominant Anglo society. The film follows the daily activities of the multigenerational Navarro family living in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Each member of the family responds differently to the pressures of assimilation, revealing a complex family portrait. Mi Raza is an invaluable example of a new style of ethnographic filmmaking: an intimate portrait of working-class domestic life and a historical record of a community in a state of flux due to immigration and political upheaval. Mi Raza was preserved by Chicago Film Archives with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation in 2008.

About Susie McCollum:
With old soul vulnerability and a rich vocal palette, indie artist Susie McCollum lives at the intersection of raw emotion and refined craft. Originally from New York City and now based in Chicago, McCollum blends timeless songwriting with a contemporary edge - drawing inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and Amy Winehouse.
A lifelong student of music, McCollum’s journey spans opera, theater, jazz, R&B, & folk - providing an eclectic background that informs her textured, authentic sound. Her mesmerizing and poetic lyricism is fueled by compassion, wit, and an insatiable curiosity about the human experience. Susie is also a self-taught guitarist - a pandemic hobby turned renewed sense of artistic purpose.
Susie arrived on the scene with the celebrated single “New Year’s Eve” in 2022, praised by A&R Factory as a “part-love song, part-indie-soulful ode to bittersweet tradition.” Her 2024 debut EP Tempt My Fate captivated audiences as "stirring and uniquely powerful” (CLOUT Magazine) for its soulful vocal and poignant songwriting. She has worked alongside artists like Christopher, Nep, and Marielle Kraft, while most recently co-writing “I Should Lose You” with indie-pop artist Jenny Kern. In addition to singing, writing, and producing, Susie has also honed her skills as a recording engineer - enabling her to truly inhabit every layer of the creative process.
Susie released her highly anticipated single “Abigail” on October 24th, whose "dreamy hush works medicinally; it doesn’t push catharsis, it coaxes it" (Uranium Waves). The work is fueled by finding a home within oneself and asking: what does it mean to truly grow up… and do we ever?
Through heartfelt melodies and soul-stirring lyrics, Susie invites listeners into a shared space of introspection and re-invention - marking her a singular and invaluable talent in today’s music scene.
About Andrew Hoyt:
Andrew Hoyt is a full-time touring singer/songwriter blending folk, pop, and acoustic vibes into a sound that’s both warm and unique. He’s performed at major venues like Wells Fargo Arena and shared the stage with artists such as AJR, Jesse McCartney, David Archuleta and Eric Hutchinson. His latest EP, Kind of Paradise, produced by Nashville’s Lucas Morton and mixed by Micah Tawlks, marks a new chapter in his artistry. The project features songs co-written with acclaimed artists Matt Wertz and Andy Davis, weaving heartfelt lyrics with melodies that feel like sunshine and nostalgia.
About Josh Trimble:
Josh Trimble is an independent multi-media artist based out of Chicago, Illinois. His trifecta of focus is poured into music, film, and photography. His debut project, “Love & Adolescence” serves as the flagship of his creative offerings. The 10-song album has been officially printed to physical copies and can be purchased through direct inquiry. The project will be accompanied by a self-written, directed, and acted film consisting of 6 of the album's featured tracks.
Pulling influence from the likes of Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Jordan Rakei, and Madison Cunningham, Josh’s music weaves bold storytelling into the throws of his siren-like melodies and fervent guitar playing.
His most recent digital release, "Vagary", is the lead-single off of the album and delivers a story of love & loss illustrated by achey cellos and aleatoric vocals.

About:
Presented by journalist Alexandra Salomon and followed by a post-screening conversation with director Susan Dobinsky, artist Sandra Antongiorgi, and photographer Ivan Justiniano. In the late 1980s, filmmakers Susan Dobinsky and Julia Kurtz were at work on Street Signs, a film about murals and muralists in Chicago. They filmed street scenes punctuated by images of the powerful and colorful murals in the city’s Pilsen, Little Village, West Town, and Humboldt Park neighborhoods, along with interviews with artists, educators, students, and activists who lived on these communities. When Dobinsky and Kurtz began the project, their objective was to make a film about the way murals become a means of communication within and outside of immigrant communities. Their plan was to explore the social and psychological aspects of murals, and the corollaries that exist between the artistry of mural-making and language. Though their film was never completed, CFA is presenting a work-in-process edit completed in 1990, featuring the voices and works of artist Sandra Antongiorgi, muralist Jose Guerrero, and photographer Ivan Justiniano, among others.

About:
Presented by Nissa Rhee, journalist and cofounder of Borderless Magazine, and followed by a post-screening conversation with director Silvia Malagrino.Born in Buenos Aires, Silvia Malagrino left Argentina in 1978 when her life as a young university student became dangerously entangled with politics surrounding the “Dirty War” and the resistance movement which materialized under one of Argentina’s most brutal military dictatorships. In the midst of the disappearance of so many young protestors and their friends, Malagrino left her country of birth and settled in Chicago. While earning her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois-Chicago, she built a career as an educator, multimedia artist, photographer, and filmmaker. In the mid-1990s she returned to Argentina to film and record the voices of mothers and grandmothers whose children had been “disappeared” in the resistance. As Robert J. Fox, chief editor of the Buenos Aires Herald, famously said of those times, “All of the institutions in Argentina failed. The only institution that didn’t fail was motherhood.” In her film, Malagrino includes her own voice among the others as she synthesizes her memories and experiences of those dangerous years. Burnt Oranges, is a very personal and poetic memoir of this war and its continuing aftermath.

About:
Fish and The Cats
Welcome to Fish and the Cats!
Jazz that swings, grooves, bops and rocks.
Come enjoy some great jazz in Chicago with Fish & the Cats! We love playing music from the Great American Song Book and other favorites that have stood the test of time.
You'll hear classics like "Honeysuckle Rose" and "What a Wonderful World," along with songs like "Cantaloupe Island" and "Moondance" – music that spans several generations.
Our group includes talented musicians and a vocalist who really brings the songs to life. You can catch us performing around Chicago, especially in Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town.
We've been fortunate to connect with audiences who appreciate jazz and keep inviting us back. If you enjoy live music and want to hear some well-played standards, we'd love to have you join us.
Why people like our performances: We focus on playing music we genuinely care about, and that enthusiasm tends to be contagious.

Sinatra ’56 — Songs for Swingin’ Lovers is the third chapter in Gary Thomas’s trilogy of cabaret concerts celebrating Frank Sinatra’s remarkable Capitol-era comeback—and the moment he hit his full, swaggering stride. Performed by Gary Thomas and The Mid-Century Modern Ensemble, the show is built around Sinatra’s landmark 1956 album Songs for Swingin’ Lovers and features its sparkling essentials alongside a handpicked set of Sinatra favorites—romantic, witty, and irresistibly swinging. Woven together with smart, engaging storytelling, the evening is stylish, funny, and full of heart. Sinatra ’56 brings mid-century sophistication to life and invites audiences to raise a glass to timeless songs, world-class swing, and the voice that made it all unforgettable.

About:
Joy Guidry is a bassoonist, versatile improviser, performance artist, and composer of experimental, daring new works that embody a deep love of storytelling; Joy’s music channels her inner child in honor of her ancestors and predecessors.
Joy Guidry’s new album, Five Prayers, is an intuitive convergence of sound, spirit, and radical self-expression. As a deeply respected artist in the experimental and avant-garde music spaces, Guidry continues to push sonic boundaries while remaining deeply connected to Black sonic traditions. Moving away from free-jazz, Five Prayers moves towards an ambient space.
This album is informed by a deep introspective. The resulting work is a manifestation of self-exploration and liberation, resonating with audiences seeking authenticity, vulnerability, and transcendence in music.

Kick off the Christmas season with Damian McGinty, lead singer of Celtic Thunder and star of the hit shows Glee and Dancing with the Stars, in a heartwarming holiday concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of his first full-length album, This Christmas Time—the album that introduced Damian's first original songs, "Irish Christmas" and "Will You Dance With Me (This Christmas Time),” and featured classics such as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “White Christmas."
Enjoy an evening packed with Christmas favorites, beloved originals, and plenty of sing-along moments as Damian fills the room with festive cheer, laughter, and the spirit of the holidays. It's the perfect way to embrace the season of joy, cozy traditions, and time spent with the people you love.
Come sing, laugh, and celebrate as we welcome the most wonderful time of the year together. Make this concert part of your holiday tradition and create memories that will last a lifetime!
