About:
If you were around during Chicago’s underground House Music movement or Rave scene in the late 80’s and early 90’s, then you’ll be utterly familiar with the name Julio Bishop. Whether from appearing weekly on some of the hottest party flyers throughout the Midwest or because you had a copy of his now infamous mix tape, “Love Nation” sold out of all the local record stores, the name Julio Bishop is synonymous with jacking dance floors since 1987.
Getting his start as a dancer and DJ in Chicago’s nightclubs and warehouses, but soon expanding his influence; from NYC to LA, to the beaches of Miami, Puerto Rico and Mexico, Germany and Sicily, Julio has been bringing his deep, mystifying grooves to the world for over 3 decades. His intimate knowledge of classic Afro-Latin and Jazz, , as well as his acquired proficiency of Disco, Electronica, Club & Deep House takes his sets far outside the realm of what is attainable by a greener selection of DJ’s.
Funneling his talents into the studio in the early 2000’s, Julio helped launch RealDEEP Recordings, along side label partner Brian Cullen (aka Bjak) where, together they paved the way to further coproductions and solo projects on labels such as Deep Explorer Music (Madrid) and Eargasmic Recordings (Chicago).
With more releases on the way and a selection of upcoming gigs scheduled between Chicago. Puerto Rico, LA & Hawaii, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for what’s to come next from this proved House Music veteran.

Attend the opening reception for Paul Branton’s LATCHKEY KID: AN INTERNAL PERSPECTIVE on Friday, January 17, from 6:00-9:00pm.
The South Side of Chicago is a precarious environment to navigate. This was true in the 70’s and remains true today. For those kids that were left alone to explore the South Side neighborhoods, this body of work speaks directly to them. The adult world colliding with adolescent minds; the conversations, sights, sounds and smells that shaped lives and influenced decisions. Branton attacks both canvas and paper to explore these memories and feelings. Comedians deal with trauma through laughter, while Paul Branton tackles these internal demons with vivid colors, unwavering truth and bits of humor. These drawings and paintings create a dialogue for healing.

Gagoh’s practice leads with a focus in photography, while spanning across music production, film, and printmaking. He has developed a signature visual and sonic language that captures the world around one with honesty and transparency. Gagoh exhibits photographic frames saturated by rich, opalescent colors, works that gaze back at the viewer, and compositions that state the obvious or encourage deeper investigation.
David Ese Gagoh’s body of work addresses the documentation of one’s life as an artistic practice, emphasizing the differences and points of relation in human experience. Themes of religion, ritual, and relationships loom throughout the work, embodying the act of living in stripped portraits, intricately structured still lives, and tranquil visions of this earth we inhabit.

Event Details
Attend the opening reception for Tom Eslinger’s exhibit LEFT TO MY OWN DEVICES on Friday, January 17, 6:00-9:00pm.
In his new electrifying series, Tom Eslinger dives deep into the colorful tapestry of human experience, drawing inspiration from a kaleidoscope of influences that span decades. Imagine the sensory overload of his childhood disco singles collection, the rebellious thrill of sneaking peeks at David Bowie and Sylvester's tantalizing late-night TV performances as a teen, and more recently, deep-diving in the vivid stories captured in the Gay New York of the 1970s and ‘80s Facebook Group.
Eslinger’s art pulses with the rhythms of songs, capturing the essence of sexual exploration, awkward one-night stands, visibility and sexual identity. The show, aptly titled Left To My Own Devices after a Pet Shop Boys song, embodies a cheeky, flirty spirit that resonates with authenticity and daring. The show’s title artwork provocatively asks, “Left to my own devices, I probably would…” —challenging viewers to contemplate the boundaries of desire and being a little bit bad. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a music lover, or someone who relishes in the richness of visual narratives, Eslinger’s work invites you into a world that is as naughty as it is honest.
RSVP for the opening reception on Friday, January 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the link below:

About daarling:
daarling is a dynamic 3-piece indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. We blend together soft and delicate passages with bursts of intensity and noise. Our style both looks to pay homage to the soft-LOUD dynamics of 90s bands such as The Breeders and Built to Spill as well as building off of contemporary influences including acts such as Mannequin Pussy, Pile, and Ovlov. Some genre labels include: indie rock, alternative rock, post punk, shoegaze.
About Silver Dollar:
Silver Dollar brings a modern approach to the timeless spirit of the ‘60s British Invasion, blending their influences with gritty energy and original flair. The group pulls inspiration from icons like The Rolling Stones and The Who, which can be heard echoed through their music. Fronted by bassist and lead vocalist Matt Cortez, the Chicago-based band’s sound is a fusion of driving drumbeats played by Alex Mazza, catchy lyrics, and electrifying riffs carried by the two guitarists Luke Frees and Austin Powers. The tunes capture the raw, rebellious charm of rock’s golden era while carving out a fresh identity for the group.
2024 was a busy, transformative time for Silver Dollar. Formed in spring, their freshman year as a group was highlighted by two EPs released: Love Bomb in April and Lotus Flower in September. Lotus Flower features their take on The Ramones’ classic “Blizkrieg Bop,” showcasing their ability to honor their muses with their own distinct sound. Silver Dollar has already played a number of well-received shows around the Chicagoland area, steadily building a local following with their dedication to live performance. On stage, they rediscover rock’s roots, bridging the past and present of the genre with their sound and presence.
About Luke Frees & The Shadowband:
Luke Frees is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who fronts a group called Luke Frees & The Shadowband. His first solo EP, After The Rain, was released in 2017 while he was living in Boston, studying songwriting and production. 2019 saw the release of his first full-length album, The Lost Weekend, which was followed by 2020’s dark, post-punk inspired Some Easy Blood. A brief move to L.A. at the end of 2020 yielded his third solo album, Point Of You, in 2021. At the end of the year, he returned to his hometown of Chicago and began playing in several projects and collaborating with other musicians in the Chicagoland music scene.
In 2022, he teamed up with Gary Zucker, a drummer he knew from his time in Boston, and the two of them worked on an a-sides/b-sides singles project that would scatter releases throughout 2023. Gary’s tight rock drumming style gave this new series of songs the energy they needed—a power not unlike John Bonham and Dave Grohl. It was clear at this point that they could have a powerful band if they found the right people to augment the duo’s core.
Luke’s brother and tenor saxophone genius Garrett Frees had appeared on a few of Luke’s songs in 2021 and 2022, and when Garrett moved back to Chicago after graduating from the New England Conservatory, Luke asked him to join the new group he was putting together. His avant garde-influenced playing can be heard on tracks like “Miss Miss U,” “Strings,” and the show- stopping live renditions of “The Waves.”
All this, of course, would be incomplete without a phenomenal bass player to lock the project in, and Zane Nyhus fit the bill. His melodic bass playing, inspired by Motown and Paul McCartney, anchors the rhythm section with a strong groove that winks at the past while pushing the songs into the future.
Luke Frees & The Shadowband released their album, Tomorrow’s Lucid Dream, in the spring of 2024, and it has since gone on to be Luke’s most streamed music, with the lead single, “Miss Miss U,” topping 100,000 streams in its first 9 months of its release. Luke has gone on to finish 2024 by playing over 100 shows, both with The Shadowband and with other projects in the Chicagoland area. The group is looking forward to 2025, when they’ll start work on the followup to Tomorrow’s Lucid Dream.

About Smiley Tillmon Band:
One of the busiest blues outfits in Chicagoland, the Smiley Tillmon Band is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. There’s an obvious reason why the veteran guitarist’s booking schedule is so jam-packed: Smiley knows how to have a good time and makes sure his audience does too. After 55 years on the local blues scene, Tillmon serves up the blues and soul standards that people never seem to stop craving, his rich vocals and fluid guitar backed by a band that keeps his grooves tight and right.
Born Moses Tillmon in rural Jefferson County, Georgia, Smiley grew up on a hearty musical diet of gospel, country, and a little blues. His mother moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was ten; there he was exposed to calypso music, adding up to a singular list of influences. Tillmon took up guitar and was good enough by the dawn of the ‘60s to back Miami R&B singer Billy Miranda in the studio. He joined Sammy Ambrose & the Afro-Beats, a calypso-oriented band, touring from Canada to New York. Smiley bid the Afro-Beats adieu in 1962 and moved to Chicago. There he established himself on the blues circuit, playing with Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Denise LaSalle, and other South Side luminaries until he opted for a day job in 1977.
Upon his 2007 retirement, Smiley reverted to full-time musical status. He joined forces with bassist Tom Rezetko, and they’ve been inseparable onstage ever since. Kate Moss shares guitar duties with Tillmon; married to another blues guitar standout, Nick Moss, Kate’s sound is heavily influenced by Freddie King and Magic Sam (she fell in love with the blues at age 21 when she met Buddy Guy, and she’s shared stages with Buddy, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Shaw, and Lurrie Bell, to name just a few). Drummer George Baumann completes one of the Windy City’s toughest blues combos, one that’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear. - Bill Dahl

Attend the opening reception for John Behnke’s FALSE GUIDES on Friday, January 24, from 6:00-9:00pm.
False Guides presents frozen moments from three interlocking stories of striving, deception, and perdition. John Behnke uses a rich mix of materials - colored pencils, alcohol markers, acrylics, oils, glaze, and glitter - layered to build scenes of hallucinogenic detail and vivid color. Behnke is known for his radiant, open skies, but scenes in False Guides play in a different register, taking us to realms of dust and shadow. In “The Wanderers” series, we follow a tribe of animated mannequins that populate an abandoned mall in Minnesota. They grope through the merchandise that remains in the ruins, seeking some semblance of an identity. Other works take us to different corners of Behnke’s re-imagined America - Texas and California. In both, cults fueled by promises of transcendence descend into orgies of self-destruction. “All these series are based on people being led in strange ways that warp an individual’s perspective and ultimately cause one’s demise,” the artist says.

Event Details
Attend the opening reception for Steven Carrelli’s TEASER, TORMENTOR, AND SCRIM on Friday, January 24, from 6:00-9:00pm.
Teasers, tormentors and scrims are types of curtains used in the theater. They define the space of the stage, and they shape the illusions we see there. Like the theatrical curtains of this title, the curtains represented in these paintings play multiple roles. They act as a figure, a ground, a backdrop, a partition, a lush symbol of authority, a decoration, a convincing illusion, a dissolving ghost image, a remnant of the past, and a surface onto which we project our associations. Likewise, the paintings themselves shift perceptually between space and flat surface, appearing and disappearing, revealing and concealing.
These works take Hans Holbein's 1533 painting The Ambassadors as a model through which to explore the uncertain nature of perception and the visual rhetoric of representation. The Ambassadors is a double portrait of two men sent as diplomats by King Francis I of France to King Henry VIII of England, probably in the hope of convincing Henry not to divorce and leave the Roman Catholic Church. Holbein's painting is a tour de force of Sixteenth Century Northern European realistic representation whose extraordinary attention to observable details suggests great faith in the truthfulness of sight, while the inclusion of a prominent and spatially ambiguous anamorphic image complicates the painting's visual illusion and injects a note of doubt into this statement of faith.
Carrelli’s paintings here are part of a larger series titled Profane Mimesis. They mimic and reinterpret their source, employing a combination of selective imitation and alteration of Holbein's painting to give form to the tensions between sight and vision: between what we see and what we believe it must mean. They are not religious paintings, and neither is Holbein’s. Indeed, the title Profane Mimesis might even suggest that the act of imitation is kind of desecration. However, these paintings do express a dialectic of faith and doubt in the power of images: a combination of love and mistrust of sight. Shown here, in what was once the sacristy of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, these paintings have the opportunity to echo and converse with this elegant and rhetorically seductive environment.

Event Details
Attend the opening reception for Ginny Krueger’s TRANSCENDENTAL GARDEN on Friday, January 24, from 6:00-9:00pm.
Since childhood, the flora of the natural world has delighted Ginny Krueger, and this serves as a springboard for her Transcendental Garden exhibit. The forms, color, and textures propose an invented world, and the physicality of materials lends to a multi-dimensional experience that engage the senses, while evoking the multifaceted layers of life.
Krueger’s works are partially or entirely created using the encaustic medium – wax, resin, and pigment in a molten form, applied to wood and further cured through fire. Working with fire is alchemical, fugitive, mesmerizing, and unpredictable, which Krueger views as a moment-by-moment adventure and a process that is infinite in fluidity and possibility. Her works are also treasure troves of fabric, ceramic, paper and other materials. With the encaustic medium serving as the grip, Krueger arranges the materials into fanciful amalgams, or unlikely gardens that that depart from the expected, and convey something entirely new in depth and complexity.
The earth and its bounty have claim on Krueger. She is driven to make art that is elemental and evocative, where each painting is a medley, a melded place, where both the gritty and sublime combine. Each offering in the exhibit is an invitation into a transcendental world of beauty, whimsy, and mystery.

About [.DESCARGA.]:
Formed in 1996, [.DESCARGA.] is a band that brings together diverse backgrounds, sounds, and expressions into a unique, ever-evolving musical journey. Comprised of four musicians from different Chicago neighborhoods, the band creates a sound that blends influences from a wide range of genres—including metal, punk, industrial, alternative, house, and blues—resulting in a fusion that defies conventional boundaries.
At the forefront of the band is Hector Ivan Garcia, whose powerful and emotive vocals serve as the band's unifying force. His voice effortlessly shifts between English and Spanish, reflecting the cultural diversity of the city and the band's commitment to breaking language barriers in their music. Alongside him is Everardo "EVIL" Rodriguez, whose skillful guitar work adds intensity and depth to their sound. Rodriguez’s guitar playing, shaped by his experiences in metal, punk, and avant-garde noise, channels raw emotion and technical precision.
The rhythm section, anchored by Jose Calvo on bass and Anthony Macias on drums, drives the band's dynamic sound, providing a powerful backbone that allows for both intensity and experimentation. Together, they create a raw, energetic atmosphere that supports the band's ever-evolving musical exploration.
The name [.DESCARGA.] has evolved over the years, symbolizing a journey of transformation. Initially representing the unloading of information and discharge of energy, it has grown to embody a more profound meaning—speaking to the emotional toll of loss, particularly the loss of loved ones to gun violence. This deeply personal connection to tragedy is woven into the fabric of their music, adding an emotional layer to their sound.
Though [.DESCARGA.]’s music is shaped by a wide array of genre influences, the band’s sound is ever-changing, refusing to be confined by any single label. With their fusion of diverse musical elements, cultural expression, and social commentary, [.DESCARGA.] continues to evolve, using their platform to connect with listeners and challenge the status quo.
As the band continues to develop, [.DESCARGA.] remains dedicated to creating an atmosphere that is both introspective and cathartic, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences while sharing in the intense energy that defines their sound.

About wht.rbbt.obj:
Lauded by Rolling Stone for their "late-night decadence and velvet tones," wht.rbbt.obj started as a covert side project by married couple Frank and River Rabbitte and has since evolved into their primary creative outlet and grown into a 4-piece tour de force, blending enigmatic themes with bold, blues and soul-infused rock. Described as "Bluesy, Smoky, Sexy, and Raw," the band defies genres with a sound that has been likened to "Amy Winehouse meets The Black Keys in a game of strip poker" by James Van Osdol of WKQX's Car Con Carne, and "Heavily distorted roadhouse raunch" by NPR's Greg Kot of Sound Opinions. UpToHear Music claims, "wht.rbbt.obj will blow everything you own out of Earth's orbit." And Music Republic Magazine recently wrote, "If Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin are your bag, then get a load of River Rabbitte.”
The band’s most recent release, “Unlucky 13,” debuted on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM.
The band has played festivals like SXSW and Summerfest in Milwaukee, as well as a number of local street festivals. They have opened for bands like Moon Walker, Eve6, and Mom Rock; and have done some regional touring, hitting: Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Louisville, Nashville, Davenport, Memphis, Richmond, Dallas, Waco and Austin.

About:
Night summary
Lake Effect Records invites you to celebrate their next release: I’ve Dreamt of You A Thousand Times by Thysbe. We return to the Epiphany Catacombs for an evening of deep and dusty, smoked-out dance floor grooves.
To commemorate the occasion, Lake Effect resident Thysbe will be performing a special live set. We have invited some of our favorite Midwestern artists to join the night. Wicker’s Portal and Relativity Lounge will be collaborating on a joint live set. And, to top off the night, we are ecstatic to have a Chicago underground staple: Flower Food.
I Dreamt of You A Thousand Times is a dub techno head bobber. The intention for the evening will be deep, dubby and groovy. Expect each artist to offer their unique take on introspective head-nod tracks.
Flower Flood
Flower Food has become a proper force in the Chicago underground scene. She has built up an impressive resume of radio shows, underground DIY events, club shows and even festivals. We met Emma on some of the best underground dance floors in Chicago. She has a deep passion for dance music that is exemplified by her battle tested DJ skills and refined music taste.
We cannot wait to hear her take on the evening.
Thysbe
Lake Effect’s Thysbe is our newest resident. After programming the underground music festival Driftmore, they recently moved to Chicago from Madison. Thysbe is a fine purveyor of deep, left-field electronic music. Lukas’ sets can cover a wide range of genres held together by a thread that is distinctly their own. For this evening, Thysbe will be performing a live set. While debuting new songs from the upcoming release, there will be a host of new tracks written for the event.
Wicker’s Portal x Relativity Lounge
Wicker’s Portal teams up with Lake Effect don Relativity Lounge to perform a collaborative live set.
Relativity Lounge needs no introduction to fans of Lake Effect. He is a prolific producer and talented dj. Wicker’s Portal holds a special place in the Midwest bass music/midtempo scene as one of the only artists primarily performing live sets. His sound is squiggly, deep and head bop inducing. Their joining of forces is sure to be a special moment in Lake Effect history

The music of Indigo centers her love of storytelling and exploration, while honoring the traditions of Jazz, RnB, and Neo-Soul.
Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, Camila is a multifaceted talent and multidisciplinary excelling as a vocalist, poet, performer and visual artist. Beginning her journey as a vocal student, she swiftly emerged as a gifted artist and creative force performing, and recording in and around the city’s jazz and avant-garde scene. About STRUAN:
STRUAN is an alt-pop artist based in Nashville, Tennessee, who has garnered international recognition for his introspective lyrics and captivating melodies. Shields began playing guitar at the age of 10 and soon found his passion for songwriting, penning his first lyrics at 13. His first original song came to life during a Battle of the Bands competition in 2005, marking the start of his musical journey. In 2012, Shields released his second EP, If I'm Being Honest, which climbed to number 3 on iTunes' Singer/Songwriter chart. He has also shared the stage with bands like Sing Me Insomnia and filmed a music video, expanding his audience and solidifying his presence in the indie music scene. Shields’ music resonates beyond the United States, particularly with fans in Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, and other European countries, contributing to his growing international following. His song "Driveway" delves into the nostalgia of missed opportunities, reflecting on moments where he played it safe. This introspective track highlights his unique storytelling style, drawing listeners in with relatable themes and honest emotions.
About Chan Fuze:
Chan Fuze is an emerging artist from Chicago, known for his innovative blend of Alternative Rock and Alternative R&B. His emotive vocals and intricate guitar work deliver a soulful exploration of life’s highs and lows. Chan Fuze has garnered significant attention with performances on NBC's The Voice and WGN Chicago, underscoring his growing prominence and broad appeal. His upcoming project aims to solidify his versatility as both a songwriter and performer, promising to captivate fans of both genres. Known for his dynamic live shows, Chan Fuze offers a unique experience that combines emotional depth with high energy. Fans of Alternative music and those in search of fresh, innovative sounds should keep an eye on him as he continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music. Don’t miss the chance to witness this rising star live.
About CALI JEWLS:
CALI JEWLS, founded in May 2019 by Caleb Harris, Alex Wolfe, and Julio Bonfante, began as a three-piece alt-pop group with a shared vision for innovative and heartfelt music. They launched their journey with their debut single, "Posture," in August 2019, quickly building excitement and setting their sights on live performances. Yet, like countless artists, their plans were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which steered them toward writing and releasing more music instead of performing.
In 2021, the trio made the pivotal decision to move to Nashville, immersing themselves in a music-centric environment to sharpen their sound and create new opportunities. It was in this period that longtime friend and unofficial “ghost member” Matt Slack joined officially, solidifying CALI JEWLS as a four-piece in late 2021. Together, the band invested in intensive rehearsals and recording sessions, patiently waiting for their chance to perform live. This persistence paid off in January 2024 with their first official show, which opened doors to gigs at Nashville's iconic venues, including The Basement, The End, and East Room, and even a festival appearance in Huntsville, Alabama.
October 2024 saw the release of their debut EP, a project that encapsulates the band’s resilience and evolving sound. CALI JEWLS now looks ahead to reconnect with their Chicago roots, planning their first hometown show in early 2025. With strengthened friendships and a shared commitment to growth, CALI JEWLS is excited to expand their fanbase, bring their music to more stages, and continue evolving as a dynamic presence in the alt-pop scene.
