About:
“Black and white, wild and tender, a balance between the duality of the forces of nature,” are the words journalist, Ana Teresa, (El Nuevo Día, Puerto Rico) used to describe Chicago pianist and composer Liza Micelli’s sound.
Combining her soul roots of Chicago and the rhythms of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, Liza's original works and re-envisioned deep cuts are as colorful as her life's journey!
Following a fervency for the Afro-Caribbean sound, Liza's curiosities lead her from her hometown Chicago to Puerto Rico at the age of 21. After studying at the prestigious Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico, she would record her well received album La Gran Dictadora, co-produced by mentor and acclaimed Latin pianist Luis Marín, in collaboration with guest artists Richie Flores, Pedro Perez (Gilberto Santa Rosa), Jimmy Rivera (Batacumbele) and Manolito Rodriguez, engineered by Hector Ivan Rosa (Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin).
As a supporting artist, this genre bending pianist's career has been as versatile as her musical interests, having played with celebrated jazz and Latin artists Eddie Gomez, Batacumbele, pop artists Viva Nativa, and Sister Nancy among others. Upon her return to Chicago, Liza was privileged to spend five years as an on-screen keyboardist for Fox’s hit show Empire under Lee Daniels, Sanaa Hamri, Danny Strong and Debbie Allen. She interacted frequently with lead cast members, shared the screen with a wide range of significant musical artists of the past 40+ years, from Patti Labelle to Alicia Keys, and has been back to the screen in recent years as personal coach for actor Anthony Fleming of Starz’s Power Book IV: Force.
Liza has also enjoyed mentorship with the world renowned pianist, composer and educator Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, saxophonist Tony Malaby and Kenny Werner in conjunction with the Berklee Global Jazz and Effortless Mastery institutes.

About Mae Krell:
Armed with earnest lyricism and her acoustic guitar, Mae Krell’s branch of indie-folk music personifies the often overlooked emotions and experiences that come with modern life. Following the success of 2020 single “garden”, Mae explored honest evaluations of the world in her eyes through 2022’s imposter syndrome EP and the subsequent imposter syndrome (b sides). Now, Krell finds herself looking towards the future with a distinct clarity as she prepares to lay her heart on the line within her upcoming debut album, releasing on April 19th, 2024.
With the help of producer and multi-instrumentalist Jakob Leventhal (Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell), Mae’s unique sound offers a perfect cushion for the deeply vulnerable discussions of mental health and the struggles that plague daily life for Krell and millions of other people. Her heartfelt music continues to offer representation for those who are so often left out of the conversation, and with such an organic and broad range of support, Mae Krell is reaching new heights within her own lyrical vulnerability – all while being focused on experiencing life just one day at a time.
About Grace Gardner:
Raised on the outskirts of a Texas city, now living in Philadelphia, Grace Gardner is pushing the boundaries of the singer/songwriter genre. While her music adopts many of the genre’s characteristics, she’s found inspiration in her parents’ taste in 70s and 80s rock, in the folk roots of her southern upbringing, and in the indie-storytelling she found herself returning to most. Taking it one step further: producing all of her own music allows Grace to maintain a personal, authentic touch in each of her pieces. Her lyricism is evocative and emotional, poignantly penning about the joys and tribulations in relationships, in recovery, and in her identity — typically backdropped by fingerpicked acoustic guitar and intricate production.
Her inspirations are eclectic powerhouse writers from the 1970s — Carole King, Stevie Nicks, and Joni Mitchell are her “Big 3.” As Grace started honing in on her own musical style, finding the intersection between soft rock, indie, and folk, she’s taken even more inspiration from artists like Samia, Olivia Barton, and Madison Cunningham. Grace plays ten instruments and uses orchestral, brass, percussive, and software-based elements in her works. Along with being a singer, songwriter, and instrument player, Grace is also a producer and arranger.
Grace’s debut EP, Peach, was released in March 2023, featuring the lead single, “Deny Me.” She’s joined emerging indie artists Ella Jane, Adam Melchor, and Tiny Habits on their tours last year. This year she joins Hans Williams, Shallow Alcove, and embarks on a headline tour. Grace’s sophomore EP, “Recovery Mile,” is due in February 2024, preceded by a track and music video for the single “Lubbock” in January.

Civic Orchestra Fellows x International Contemporary Ensemble
Date: Friday, May 10, 2024

Showtime: 6:30PM
Tickets: FREE ADMISSION | RSVP BELOW
About:
Be delighted and inspired by this contemporary chamber music concert featuring music by living composers curated and performed by the Fellows of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, members of International Contemporary Ensemble and special guest Douglas Ewart. The program will be announced this spring.
The Civic Orchestra of Chicago prepares young professional musicians for lives in music. Civic members participate in rigorous orchestral training and perform free concerts in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center and in communities across Greater Chicago. Through an array of experiences designed to build and diversify creative and professional skills, the Civic Fellowship program empowers participants to realize their full potential as artistically excellent, civically engaged, collaborative and entrepreneurial musicians.
Now in its third decade, the International Contemporary Ensemble is a multidisciplinary collective of musicians, digital media artists, producers, and educators committed to building and innovating collaborative environments in order to inspire audiences to reimagine how they experience contemporary music and sound. Under the leadership of composer and Artistic Director George Lewis, the Ensemble creates a mosaic musical ecosystem as “America’s foremost new-music group” (The New Yorker), honoring the diversity of human experience and expression by commissioning, developing, recording, and performing the works of living artists in “a mission worth following” (I Care If You Listen).
Perhaps best known as a composer, improviser, sculptor and maker of masks and instruments, Douglas R. Ewart is also an educator, lecturer, arts organization consultant and all-around visionary. In projects done in diverse media throughout an award-winning and widely acclaimed 40-year career, Ewart has woven his remarkably broad gifts into a single sensibility that encourages and celebrates — as an antidote to the divisions and compartmentalization afflicting modern life — the wholeness of individuals in culturally active communities.

The goal of every LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER production is to take the audience on a well-crafted 90-minute journey of diverse true stories about motherhood—being a mom, having a mom, losing a mom, finding a mom—as many interpretations on the theme of mothering as you can imagine. From hilarious and heartwarming, to emotionally intense and profound, LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER entertains, energizes, brings community together and leaves everyone feeling a little less alone and a little more understood.
It’s an evening of laughter and tears. Of stories that inspire. And the best part? This event supports a local nonprofit supporting women and families in need.
We proudly sponsor Soroptimist Chicago & Illiana, helping women and children live their dreams. About:
The Diego Rodriguez Big Band, commonly known as the DRBB, emerged onto the Chicago jazz scene in December 2022 with a profound commitment to the art form and a dedication to preserving the legacy of big band music.
Led by drummer Diego Rodriguez, this ensemble stands as a testament to the enduring traditions of Black American Music. Rooted in the greats who laid the foundations of this music, the DRBB reverently pays homage to their contributions while simultaneously aiming to create their own sound. Their repertoire is marked by a fusion of standard repertoire and original arrangements/compositions, encapsulating the essence of both the past and the present.
For the DRBB, the connection among its members is not merely professional but deeply personal. Comprising Diego's closest friends, the band operates as a cohesive unit, much like an extended musical family. This close-knit bond transcends the stage and recording studio, infusing their performances with a profound sense of unity and shared purpose. The band's journey has been punctuated by notable achievements in the Chicago music scene, including performances and recording sessions alongside accomplished musicians such as Marques Carroll, Jeremy Kahn, Kevin King, Abigail Riccards, Victor Garcia, and Kellin Hanas.
The remainder of 2023 and the approaching new year promise to be an ambitious chapter for DRBB. The ensemble is currently recording their debut album. This album will showcase brand new original arrangements and compositions, and feature musicians Victor Garcia, Dan Nicholson, Kellin Hanas, Arman Sangalang, Maggie Kinney, Neal Alger, and Marquis Hill. Additionally, the band is gearing up for a series of performances at high schools in the South suburbs, where they aim to nurture an appreciation for jazz and inspire the next generation of musicians.
